Work Text:
He knew the moment he looked up and saw her face that she would be his wife one day. He didn’t know a thing about her, but she captivated him in a way that no other woman ever had. The way her hair lay on her shoulders, the way her eyes sparkled as she looked at him.
She looked angry. He wasn’t sure why? He was the one who should be angry since she stopped his ball from hitting the hole! He wasn’t though, more amused and intrigued. He wasn’t going to let her get away with it, didn’t matter how beautiful she was. He was in the middle of a game!
“That’s not cool!” He said as he set his pool cue down on the floor, holding it upright. She looked at him again. This time with less anger and more of what looked like appreciation.
“What’s not cool is you hogging the pool table for 2 hours.” She said. He heard her friend say, “Yeah, people are waiting.” But he didn’t take his eyes off her. She was looking him up and down. He couldn’t help but smile.
“And if you’re playing like that you’re cheating!” She said, small smile crossing her lips. “Rule is one foot on the ground at all times.”
“Pretty sure I did!” He replied, amused.
“I’m positive you didn’t.” She replied, a huge smile across her face. Wow. She was beautiful. He felt like he was falling in love already. He was really taken with her, the smile that spread across his face said it all.
His gaze was broken by Spike asking her to take the shot if she was so good, whilst handing her a cue. “What a gentleman, giving me the cue that’s wobbly in the middle and chipped on top” She said to Spike, “Every bar has a crooked cue and I’m looking at it.” She threw the cue back at Spike and took his.
She was something else! He was completely captivated by her. She stopped in front of him, flicked her hair, stuck her chest out and put her hand on her hip. Giving him a ‘go on try me’ look. She was squaring up to him!
She was just…he didn’t know, but he knew he liked it. He realised he was staring at her whilst she stood there. “You make the shot, you get the table.” He said to her as he walked away, turning back and keeping his eyes on her he gave her one of his half smiles.
He didn’t think she could make the shot. She was definitely confident about it though. His plan was to buy her a drink in commiseration when she didn’t get the ball in.
She leaned back on the pool table, pool cue behind her back mimicking his earlier pose. Although she kept both of her feet firmly on the ground. Hitting the white ball with her cue she knocked the ball right into the hole.
He was speechless! Spike let out a “Oooh” sound while her friend cracked up with laughter. He couldn’t help but smile at her. She looked at him with a smug smile on her face. “Deal’s a deal.” She said. He didn’t think he could be more attracted to anyone as he was to her right then.
He had to give her the table now. He felt a little deflated his plan to buy her a drink was out of the window now. How was he going to see her again? He needed to think, quick. Giving her a lingering look he said, “Have a good night.”
“You too.” She replied cheerfully.
Picking up his beer from the table he noticed her bag. Her work lanyard was attached! He smiled as he realised he could see her again. Taking a sip of his beer and giving her a half smile he said, “See you at Bronze HC. We start as interns on Monday.”
He made his way to the exit not even waiting for Spike. As he looked back he smiled at her, he saw her roll her eyes. “Great!” She said. “Just what we need a new batch of arrogant, know it all interns.” He chuckled and flashed her another smile through the window as he left.
She sighed. This was not how her night was supposed to go. She’d wanted to have a few drinks and play a couple of games of pool with Faith after work. Instead they’d been sat at their table for over 2 hours whilst two jerks hogged the pool table.
Pissed off she stood up from her table grabbed her bag and made her way over to where the two guys were playing pool. She heard Faith behind her. Banging her bag down on the table she stood in front of the pool table where one of the guys was about to make a shot.
Picking up the ball before it could hit the hole she gave the guy a look that said ‘you’re pissing me off’. As he looked up at her she was taken aback. He was gorgeous! Looking at her with brown soulful eyes, she could see he was pissed at her. Well good!
“That’s not cool,” he said. He had a cheek!
“What’s not cool is you hogging the pool table for 2 hours!” She replied. She heard Faith say something behind her but she didn’t hear what it was. She was too busy looking this guy up and down.
He gave her a smile as she told him off. It took her breath away. He was something else. She didn’t expect to be this attracted to him, she’d literally only just met him. It usually took her a while to be attracted to anyone. She liked to know them a little first. So this was all quite new.
She needed to get a hold of herself. She’d drool if she kept on looking at him like that! “If you’re playing like that, you’re cheating! Rule is one foot on the ground at all times.” He seemed taken aback by her statement. “Pretty sure I did,” he said, looking at her intently.
She couldn’t stop the big grin that crossed her face as she said, “I’m positive you didn’t!” He gave her a smile then. She felt a little weak at the knees. No one had ever had this effect on her, ever. What was this? Love at first sight? No! More lust at first sight, obviously. But she couldn’t fool herself, she was falling for him and she’d barely known him two minutes.
His friend challenged her to take the shot and tried to give her a crappy cue! “What a gentleman,” she said. “Giving me the cue that’s wobbly in the middle and chipped on top. Every bar has one crooked cue and I’m looking at it!” She wasn’t talking about the pool cue as she threw it back to his friend and took his.
Stopping in front of where he was leaning on the pool table, she knew she’d have to put on a bit bravado. He was making her weak whenever he looked at her! She flicked her hair, stuck her chest out and put her hand on her hip to challenge him.
He stared at her for a while before saying “You make the shot you get the table.” She knew he thought she couldn’t do it. Most men did. Well, cocky as they were, they were wrong. She had made this shot hundreds of times!
He looked back at her with a half smile as he walked away. Wow. He almost threw her off her game, almost! Mimicking his earlier pose, and keeping both her feet firmly on the ground she made the shot. The ball made a bang as it dropped into the hole.
Looking up with a smug smile she could see he was surprised. His friend made an “Ooooh” sound whilst Faith started laughing. He looked up at her, smile on his face. “Deal’s a deal.” She said.
His friend looked at him then, waiting to take his cue from his actions. He gave her a long look before saying, “Have a good night.” She was pleased she’d beaten him. But was hoping he’d stick around or ask for her phone number, she really wanted to see him again.
“You too,” she replied cheerfully. He turned and picked up his drink, noticing her bag. “See you at Bronze HC, we start as interns on Monday.” He said, giving her a smug smile. Yes! She would get to see him again!
She needed to be nonchalant though. “Great, just what we need. A new batch of arrogant know it all interns.” She threw at him. He chuckled as he left the bar, turning and smiling at her through the window. She couldn’t help but smile back.
They’d been working together for over two weeks now. He knew he needed to ask her out. He wanted to. But he’d heard that she would never date anyone from work. That she was asked out all the time, almost always by interns and she never once said yes.
She obviously had a rule about dating at work. But then she’d never been asked out by him before. He knew she was into him. She thought she was hiding it, but he caught her looking at him when she thought he wasn’t looking.
He wasn’t so conservative. He wanted her to know he liked her. He wasn’t going to go out of his way to compliment her, that wasn’t his style. But he made sure she knew he was looking at her. He was always giving her little smiles.
He was just waiting for an opportunity to arise where it felt like the right time to ask her on a date. He hoped it would be today.
He was pulled from his thoughts as an unconscious man was wheeled into the ER. And there she was, as he rushed into bay 4 to treat the man. She was right there on the other side of the bed. He could swear she waited to work with him. She was based on the fifth floor, yet whenever he was working in the ER she was there too.
He’d noticed she was just as good, if not better than any of the doctors. She knew her stuff. And was usually right. Although other doctors would dismiss her because she was a nurse. That wasn’t something he would do, and not just because he thought he was in love with her.
She told him what she thought was wrong with the patient, she was probably right. Waving the ultrasound wand over the man’s chest he said, “You’re right! I need an 18 gage spinal needle and a 10cc syringe.” Nurse Maclay was about to oblige when she stopped her, holding her hand up.
She said, “Woah, you’re an intern, you’re not supposed to do procedures without supervision.” These rules just made his job harder. “Well while we wait for an attending to come down, the patient will die!” He replied, pissed off. She gave him a pointed look.
He hadn’t thought she would be a stickler for rules. That was disappointing! “You can help me or get out of my way.” He almost spat at her, there wasn’t time for this. He knew what he was doing and the patient was going to die if he didn’t act.
She looked a little taken aback by his statement. She gave him a long look before saying, “Careful O’Connor, you’re going to need people like me.” Wham and there it was, she had a hold on him. He felt like she had hold of his heart.
He couldn’t help but give her a little smile. “Someone get me an IV,” she said. And now she was helping him. He just kept on falling deeper and deeper. He did the procedure flawlessly and the patient’s stats started normalising.
Turning and smiling at her as he listened to the patient’s heartbeat he said, “Looks like you just went rogue to save a patient.”
“Wouldn’t be the first time.” She replied, whilst giving him a smile and a long side look. Now was the time!
He took a deep breath, “Whenever you’re free, I’d like to…” he didn’t get to finish his sentence before she interrupted him. “Friday at 8.” She gave him a smile, “I’ll eat pretty much anything, but I hate white tablecloths so let’s keep it casual.”
Well that told him. She knew what she wanted! And she’d said yes. He couldn’t help smiling. And now he couldn’t wait till Friday.
She had hoped he was going to ask her out. It had been weeks now since they’d began working together and he still hadn’t. He was making it pretty clear he liked her. He was always looking at her and smiling. She’d get butterflies whenever he looked at her.
She knew she had rules about dating at work but this was different. She’d never met a man like him, that had this kind of effect on her. He made her heart race. Sometimes she could swear he could hear it, it was beating that loudly when he was close to her.
She tried to hide how she felt. She wasn’t the type of woman to be overt with her feelings, but he had caught her looking at him a few times now. And she always blushed when he did, which she could kick herself for.
Faith knew too, and wouldn’t let up teasing her about it. She just hoped no one else knew. She hated people seeing her as anything but in control.
She heard his pager go off and saw him head to the ER. She followed. She’d been doing this a lot lately. Working herself into whatever patient he was working on. She knew it was obvious too, but she couldn’t help herself.
As the patient was wheeled into bay 4 she told him what she thought it was. She knew she was right. Unlike the other doctors he never dismissed what she had to say, he always took her seriously. Which just made her like him more.
Doing the ultrasound he said, “You’re right.” Then he started barking orders at Nurse Mackay, he was actually going to do the procedure himself! She knew he was cocky but she couldn’t believe he would be so reckless! He’d only been here two weeks, they hadn’t even paged an attending.
Holding her hand up to stop Nurse Mackay she said, “Woah, you’re an intern. You’re not supposed to do procedures unsupervised!”
He looked at her in disbelief, “Well while we wait for an attending to come down the patient will die!”
She looked at him pointedly hoping to get through to him. He could be fired if this went wrong. “So you help me or you get out of my way!” He almost spat at her. She could see the anger on his face. She hadn’t expected him to be this arrogant. It took her by surprise.
But, he shouldn’t be talking to her like that and she wasn’t going to let him get away with it. Didn’t matter how much she liked him, no one spoke to her like that! “Careful O’Connor, you’re going to need people like me!”
He seemed to like that. He gave her a little smile. She was going to help him anyway, but that smile spurred her on more. “Someone get me an IV.” She ordered.
He did the procedure without any complications and the patient normalised. He was good, she’d give him that. He could be that arrogant when he was that good.
He gave her another half smile and said, “Looks like you just went rogue to save a patient!” Smiling back at him, she couldn’t quite take her eyes off him, she said. “Wouldn’t be the first time.”
She wanted him to know she wasn’t some stickler for the rules. She’d put herself out for a patient when it was needed. But she liked doing it on her terms she didn’t like being pushed into it.
“Whenever you’re free…” he started to say. Finally! She thought he’d never ask her out! “…I’d like to…” She didn’t let him finish, she couldn’t she was a little too excited. “Friday at 8.” She realised how eager she sounded, but she didn’t care. Well maybe a little. So she threw in a little control. “I’ll eat pretty much anything, but I hate white tablecloths so let’s keep it casual.”
He gave her a half smile as she walked away. She knew she’d broken her own rule, but well she only had to break it once for it to be the right decision. She realised he’d asked her out in front of several nurses and EMTs. So now their date would be common knowledge. Not something she relished.
Friday came and 8pm couldn’t come fast enough. She had gone home after her shift finished at six. He’d had to stay after his shift had finished so ended up going straight from work. He was glad he’d brought his clothes with him, he just wished he could have showered first.
Pulling up outside her house he realised he’d been that eager to not be late, he was now forty-five minutes early. He didn’t want to sit in the car waiting so went and knocked on her door. She didn’t answer. He knocked again.
He heard noises and then her cursing before hearing the locks on the door being opened. It only occurred to him then that she may not be ready. She opened the door, obviously surprised to see him there early. She had a full face of makeup, rollers in her hair and was only wearing a bath towel.
He gulped. Eyes sweeping over her body from head to toe. He was already aroused. “You’re early!” She said, whilst she moved aside to let him in. Shutting the door behind him, she gestured to the sofa. “I’m going to be about twenty minutes; you’ll have to amuse yourself with the TV for now.”
He didn’t make a move towards the sofa he moved closer to her. He didn’t care that he was being forward or that they hadn’t even been on their date yet. He’d wanted her from the moment he met her and seeing her wearing nothing but a towel he was finding it hard to stay away from her.
Her eyes seemed to glaze over as he moved his head down to hers. He slowly kissed her, his hands grabbing her waist. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him back, moving her body closer to his. His whole body felt like it was on fire.
His lips tingled as the kiss became more passionate. He was completely aroused, and he wanted her now, he pushed his groin against hers whilst kissing her harder. She responded by groaning, which just turned him on more.
Suddenly she pulled away and let go of him. She let out a low “Oh,” sound. Looking at her he could see a realisation cross her face, she seemed to be battling with something. She looked at him intently before kissing him again whilst pulling off his jacket.
He kissed her back, his hands moving from her waist to the bottom of her towel. It was a small towel; it didn’t cover much. He moved his hands slowly up the inside of her towel when she suddenly pushed him towards the back of the house.
Reaching what must be her bedroom she began unbuttoning his shirt whilst pulling him on top of her as they fell on her bed. Her towel fell open as they did. He was so turned on, more than he’d ever been in his life! He moved his kisses down her neck towards her breasts.
She let out little moans that were driving him crazy. Shrugging his shirt off whilst his lips never left her body, he felt her hands undoing his belt and jeans. He stopped kissing her and looked up at her. Before he took his jeans off he said, “Are you sure?” He wanted to make sure she wasn’t going to regret this.
She responded by kissing him passionately and pulling him towards her open legs. She grabbed his waist and pulled him inside her, letting out a loud moan as she did. She felt unbelievable!
He moved inside her as she threw her head back and let out a loud scream. His climax came at the same time as hers and he nuzzled her neck as he let out a low groan. Going limp on top of her he lifted his head and looked at her smiling.
She looked up at him, cheeks flushed, skin dewy with sweat. He was in love with her, it hit him hard. Kissing her, he could feel himself becoming aroused again. He was still inside of her. She responded to his kiss passionately, suddenly flipping them both so she was on top of him.
He became excited. She started grinding her hips as she kissed him. Wow. She just kept getting better. This time didn’t last as long but they both climaxed at the same time again, loudly.
She went limp on top of him. Lying her head on his chest he could feel her breathing heavily. She started giggling. “What?” He asked, amused. Lifting her head to look at him she said, “Well that was some first date!” He laughed with her.
“We could probably still make our reservation if we hurried.” He looked at her smiling. She made a “mmmmmmn” sound. “I like it here though.” She said as she snuggled into his chest and pulled the blanket over them.
