A Knight's Resolve

Summary:

This is a short side story for one of my characters in the ongoing RP set in the world of Magi-Knights Awakening, a TTRPG based on elements from magical girl and sentai, with Lovecraftian horror influences, though none of that is in this short interlude. This is the story of one Knight escaping her abusive father.

Work Text:

Coco looked around the room she’s lived in for the last eighteen years. It was odd, because she had decided this would be the last time she’d ever see it. She didn’t have much worth taking. Some clothes, a couple toiletries, Sakura, her pink kitty plush, and a couple small things Riley and Hotaru had given her. All of this was stuffed into a suitcase she’d bought at the thrift store and snuck it back to her room. She’d been working up the courage to do this for a while now, ever since she went to talk to her new teammate, Talyn. He had been right. She couldn’t keep everyone away for long. She just hoped Riley and her parents would take her in. If not… well, she’d figure something out. This was going to be the safest for everyone involved. She sighs and turns and walks down the hallway, hopefully for the final time. As she stepped into the living room-

“Where the hell do you think you’re going?” spat Hideki Fujiya, her father.

“I’m leaving.” Coco replied simply. She had to. For herself. For Hotaru and Riley. Even for the selfish, angry man with a vein pulsing in his forehead before her.

“The hell you are. Dishes need done.” He pointed to the kitchen, where the sink was full. “And the laundry needs done.”

“So do it. I told you, I’m leaving.” She kept moving forward, opening the front door where her ride was waiting, and stepped outside, her father coming after her in his rage. He grabbed her shoulder and spun her around in the front yard.

“You don’t talk back to me, you little bitch !” He raised his hand. “I’m your fucking father!”

Coco didn’t flinch. Instead she stared him in the eye. His hand collided with her cheek, hard, but she’d been hit harder, and by scarier monsters than the one who sired her. Did it hurt? Sure. Was there already a bruise forming? Yes. But she was resolved. She wouldn’t be cowed by his threats and violence. Not anymore.

She turned her head to look back at him, her expression unchanged, still full of defiance and resolve as he raised a hand again, but at this point a muscular figure tackled her father to the ground. Coco steps back as Hideki swears at the large man now kneeling on his back.
“Get off me, or I’m gonna call the cops!” screamed Hideki.
“I am the cops! And I just saw you assault your daughter!” Said Detective Adam Jones. This was her friend, Sanaya’s father. Coco had asked Sanaya if she and her dad could come and give her a ride to Riley’s for this exact reason. To help her escape.
“Coco? You okay?” Sanaya came over and took the shabby suitcase as her father arrested Coco’s for assault and battery.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Thanks.” Her cheek began to swell and Sanaya guided her over to the car to wait.

Soon enough, a cop car and an ambulance rolled up and the cops inside took statements from Sanaya and a few neighbors that had seen what happened and a police report was filed while Coco was being checked by the EMTs. Once that was done, Sanaya and her father drove Coco over to Riley’s, who answered the door and pulled Coco into a tight hug the moment she saw her and her bruised, swollen cheek.
