Work Text:
Lucy sinks down lower in her seat, shifting around as she tries to find a comfortable position. She huffs in frustration. Airplane seats are impossible to sleep in. She hears the man in the aisle seat grumble under his breath as she accidentally kicks too far out. Lucy mumbles an apology and resigns herself to a sleepless flight.
She slides the window cover up just enough to see the small twinkle of lights as they pass over towns. Spending a week in D.C. testifying in court was not Lucy’s idea of a good time. Especially since Kate’s reached the uncomfortable part of her pregnancy.
With her due date only being three weeks out, Lucy had been nervous to leave her. She’d weighed the pros and cons of being found in contempt of court before Jane assuaged her fears, promising to stay with Kate all week.
That eased Lucy’s anxiety a little, knowing Kate would be looked after. Hopefully getting enough sleep to keep from feeling miserable. Kate’s taken to sleeping with two body pillows. Well, one body pillow and Lucy subbing in as her second one.
And the times Lucy had to work late or all night, Kate would find herself unable to sleep. She claimed it was the baby who missed Lucy and kept her up out of spite. Not that she herself was that dependent on her wife to sleep. After some gentle ribbing from Jane, Kate begrudgingly admitted that both may be true.
After touching down in Honolulu and driving through empty streets, Lucy sneaks into the condo around two thirty in the morning. Gently dropping her bags in the living room before creeping into the bedroom. She’s so tired and cranky, but that melts away once her eyes adjust to the darkness and Lucy sees two figures on the bed.
Kate’s on her side, making use of the obscenely expensive body pillow she’d tried to insist she didn’t need. Her swollen belly cradled in the curve of the cushion. Jane’s her big spoon, providing support from behind. Her arm’s around Kate, hand tucked between the pillow and Kate’s belly.
Lucy tiptoes over and kisses Kate’s forehead. She shifts slightly which has Jane lifting her head and blinking blearily at Lucy. Lucy snickers to herself as Jane sleepily slurs her name. She reaches out and pushes the hair out of Jane’s face, lightly scratching at her scalp.
“Hey, it’s just me. I’ll join you in a bit, go back to sleep.”
Jane grunts in response. “Mkay”. She tucks herself back against Kate and her eyes flutter closed again.
It’s something Lucy never could’ve guessed would happen when Kate first came to the island. She and Jane becoming so close. Giving Lucy plenty of opportunities to joke about how she’s really the third wheel for Tenstler, as Ernie had dubbed them.
Her initial knee jerk reaction was to be jealous. To wonder if their friendship that had blossomed during her time gone for agent afloat was really just a friendship.
But Kate shyly admitting to Lucy that she hadn't had a best friend in years, never having a friend as good as Jane lessened Lucy’s fears. And Jane’s quiet confession during a stakeout, that Kate’s been her saving grace during a rough patch the rest of the team wasn’t privy to, put all the insecurities to bed.
Jane and Kate go hiking together, have friendly competitions at the shooting range, have wine nights. Although wine nights have mostly turned into ‘Jane getting drunk and professing her undying platonic love for Kate’ nights since Kate’s pregnant. The blonde now a bystander, watching on in amusement with Lucy having to tag along to help babysit her boss. But Lucy doesn’t mind, because now she has so much blackmail material.
Now Lucy loves their bond. Isn’t surprised at all to come in after her trip to find the two snuggled up in bed. Lucy’s got a joke about Jane being her sister-wife on the tip of her tongue, but she’ll wait until morning to share it with them.
Lucy speeds through a shower, not bothering with washing her hair. She just needs to scrub the airplane grime off of her. She goes through an abbreviated version of her nighttime routine because it’s technically morning now. And she’s going to have to be up in roughly four hours anyway. Lucy quietly rifles through a draw and pulls out a pair of shorts and a tank top and tugs them on.
Finally, god finally, she lifts the covers and slides in behind Jane. Lucy sighs and shuffles closer, fitting her front against Jane’s back and winds an arm around her, reaching down to rest her hand on Kate’s hip. She smiles as she feels Jane relax against her. Lucy shuts her eyes and tucks her face against the back of Jane’s neck, slowly drifting off to sleep.
