Chapter Text
The last light of day faded over the swamp, leaving behind a pale orange glow barely touching the still waters. The swamp, known for its eerie reputation, seemed even more silent tonight—too quiet, too still. A small group of strangers, armed with flashlights and bravado, made their way through the thick trees, ready for the ghost-hunting challenge they’d heard so much about.
"Are we sure this is a good idea?" one of them asked, his voice nervous, though he tried to mask it with a chuckle.
"Relax," another replied, "We’ll be legends if we make it through the night."
They walked deeper into the swamp, the trees pressing around them, their footsteps soft on the damp ground. The air smelled of earth and decay, but the thrill of the challenge kept their nerves at bay. But as the minutes passed, the unease grew thick and oppressive.
One of the group members, a young woman with long dark hair, froze when she saw something through the trees. "Hey, look over there," she whispered, pointing her flashlight toward the water.
At first, the group thought it was just another light trick, but as they approached, the flashlight's beam revealed something unmistakable.
A body—twisted and disfigured—floated beneath the surface, its limbs bent at unnatural angles. The water around it was still, unmoving, as though the swamp held its breath.
A cold shiver ran down their spines. One of them gasped, stumbling backward. "No way. This isn't part of the challenge."
Panic set in. The group huddled together, unsure of what to do, their voices rising in confusion and fear.
"We need to get out of here," one man said, his voice shaking.
But before they could make a move, the sound of cracking branches echoed from deeper in the swamp, followed by a deep, guttural growl.
The flashlight beams flickered, casting long, eerie shadows. The darkness around them felt alive, pressing in as the sound of something—or someone—approached. The swamp had never felt so alive before. And neither had the mystery, now thickening with every passing second.
