‘I think about you all the time.’
Danny scratches it quickly into the lined page of the journal and stares at it.
He just got off a video call with Drew about 30 seconds ago.
He blinks down at the scribble on the page and stands to get a drink. When he returns with a glass of water and sets it against the wood, he sits back in his chair and returns his gaze to the words on the page.
‘I think about you all the time.’
He takes a deep breath. They just spoke for an hour. He picks the pen back up and fiddles with it.
He kicks his legs out, propelling him backward in the desk chair. His feet skid him to a gentle halt. There’s no articulating his feelings better than that right now.
He stands again. “fuck-ing-drew” he breathes out quietly in his mild disarray.
He leaves his office to tidy the kitchen before Laura gets home.
Danny lies awake that night, thinking of himself. His experiences that led him to where he is. Then he thinks about Drew. He compares and contrasts. Like counting sheep but for someone who’s hopelessly intertwined with his best friend.
He’s starting to question the sanity of a bedtime activity like this when he finally starts to feel the weight in his eyelids and falls asleep.
