A Sapphic Nightmare Before Christmas

Summary:

Andy had survived working at 'Runway' so far. There is just one thing she wished she had for Christmas: a girlfriend. She decides to try online dating, and luckily, her friend Serena is willing to lend a helping hand (not everybody seems to be happy about this situation though).

Come along with me on this Christmas adventure full of misunderstandings, hope, despair and of course, silly humor.

Notes:

I'm writing this story after having downloaded the one app we have in Spain for lesbians AGAIN (last time, it was in 2022, when I wrote another fic about online dating called "Sappho Does Not Want to Play Cupid").

I guess I'm a masochist, but when you live in this country and especially, in a conservative city that doesn't have gay spaces, isn't big, and your only hope isn't Obi-Wan, but a stupid app, disaster is guaranteed. The story is inspired by weird conversations I have experienced there, I wanted to make my suffering useful 😅

Chapter Text

Three months. Andy had been working at Runway for three months. They needed someone who could survive here and so far, she had. She had been afraid of having to go back to Ohio, as she was not ready to give up New York city; it was not perfect, but it offered way more opportunities, at least workwise. She felt like something was missing though.

“Ugh, of course they keep adding more stupid Hallmark movies!” the assistant rolled her eyes in annoyance, browsing her Netflix library at her small apartment.

Working for Miranda Priestly was a hard job, and that was an understatement, but if she was asked what is harder: working for her or trying to find a girlfriend? She knew which option she would choose. She barely had any free time, not to mention, after coming back home, she was too exhausted to do anything. There was only one thing she could do that did not require much time, but it was a silly idea really, one that would never work, or maybe... she shook her head and decided to watch (yet again) her comfort show, The Office. If there was ever a day in which that show could not cheer her up, she would know she had hit rock bottom. After a couple of episodes, she was feeling much better. She then grabbed her phone. Should I try this? she kept her phone pressed against her, while she laid on the couch, looking at the ceiling. Fuck it, what do I have to lose? I’m already losing my mind here. And just like that, she downloaded the very thing she swore she would never use: a dating app.

The next day…

“Andrea, will you snap out of it and pick up the bloody phone already?!” a voice took her out of her thoughts.

“Wha…? Oh, yes!” she finally picked up the phone, “Miranda Priestly’s office. Uh-huh. Alright.”

“You’re lucky Miranda hasn’t come out of her office or else you’d already be unemployed.” the Brit said, raising her chin, and went back to typing.

What a kiss-ass… does she think she will be inheriting this company some day?

Nigel and Serena walked out of Miranda’s office, but the second assistant was so lost in her thoughts again, looking at her phone, that she did not even notice. Emily, on the other hand, did look in their direction, her face lighting up at seeing her friend, only for her smile to vanish a couple of seconds later, after seeing her walking toward… Andrea’s desk? What the fuck?

“Hi, there, Andy!”

“Shit!” she brought her hand to her chest.

“What got you so startled? I am not that ugly, am I?” the blonde asked playfully, crossing her arms.

“No, no, of course not! I’m just… a little bit distracted, that’s all.”

Emily tried to hear what they were talking about, even tried to be sneaky looking over her computer.

“Careful or you’ll end up turning into a giraffe.” Nigel said amused.

“Sssh!” the redhead made a gesture with her arms to make the man keep his voice down, “What do you think is going on there?” she asked.

“That’s called chitchatting with your peers, you should try it sometime, that is, if you ever decide to take that broom out of your…”

“Ahem.” a woman cleared her throat behind the Art Director.

“I better go take a look at those new pictures.” he said, leaving immediately.

Emily looked smug. Take that.

“Can someone explain to me why I am called a tyrant when it seems my employees are so relaxed around here they think they can waste time gossiping instead of actually getting some work done?”

“Sorry, Miranda.” Serena turned around and, like Nigel, disappeared through the hall, without even looking in Emily’s direction. She pretended to not be hurt by that.

A few hours later, at lunch time, Emily came back from the bathroom to get her purse and go grab a bite with Serena as usual, only to find her and her archenemy hanging out again. The audacity! Why is she suddenly so close to bloody Andrea Sachs of all people?!  Well, if this is how it’s going to be, I’ll just eat on my own. She grabbed her purse and walked away, furious.

“Yes, leave it like that. You can modify your bio at any time, but it’s better to not give away too much information: that way, women will ask about you and you can start a conversation easily.”

“Thank you so much, Serena, I feel like I’m an alien right now. I don’t really know what I’m doing here.” Andy replied, blushing.

“It’s okay, we’ve all been there. Maybe someone will send you a message while we have lunch,” she winked at her, “which reminds me… where’s Emily? She always waits up for me.” she turned around, confused.

“Oh, she told me she had to go to the bathroom. But she usually comes back quickly.”

“Hmm… let me text her real quick. I’ll let her know we’re going to have lunch now and she can join us later.”

“Alright!” Not weird at all, after all, Emily is a ball of sunshine who loves spending her time with Miranda’s second assistant.

After paying for their food, Serena and Andy found a free table and took a seat. Serena placed her purse on the one next to her to save it for Emily.

“So, are you excited?” the blonde asked with a huge smile.

She was so different from Emily that Andy wondered how they could get along so well. Maybe because of one of them being so grumpy they complemented each other nicely. If only she could find herself a grumpy girlfriend…

“Earth calling Andy.”

“Sorry! What did you say?”

“I just asked if you’re excited about this situation, about the dating app.”

“Oh, yes, well, I mean, I have zero expectations, that way I won’t be let down.”

“Believe me, you will, that’s inevitable. You will find weirdos, others will stop replying, you know the drill.”

“Do I? Wow, now I am not so sure if I can do this, I have read some scary stories about people dating online.”

“Don’t worry, just speak with several women and meet at a public place during daytime.”

“Oh, ‘cause that’s so easy, especially when I have to stay up late waiting for the Book.”

“Then meet at Starbucks during one of your errands, that way you two can even exercise together while you get to know each other, running for your life trying not to spill Miranda’s coffee.”

“Ha, ha.” she laughed sarcastically.

The two women were unaware that someone was watching them. Screw it, I’m coming over. Emily had already finished lunch (if a bunch of cheese cubes could even be considered that).

“All I know is that you’re eye candy, Andy. Oh, and it rhymes!” she laughed at her own joke, “Especially after having let Nigel and I take care of you. And I hope you have burned that ugly skirt as well as the sweater.”

“Wow, thank you, coming from you is a big deal.” Andy replied shily.

This can’t be happening, it’s my worst nightmare! The redhead turned around before they could even notice her, trying to leave with as much dignity as possible.

Serena raised her bottle of water, “To finding love.”

The brunette did the same with hers, “…and to not dying in the process.” they laughed, unaware of their coworker walking away while trying to put on a straight face, as if the fact they had started dating did not bother her. Not at all.
