Work Text:

Five years earlier

Tim sits at the bar, looking around and realizing this is the last place he wants to be on Christmas Eve. He’s alone and he’s feeling like he’s drowning in the mass of people crammed inside the bar.

His divorce from his now ex wife Isabel was finally finalized. After going back and forth it with her and knowing that they were toxic for each other. He was glad it was finally over, he was glad Isabel was finally getting help.

His sister Genny, was out of town with his two nephews visiting her ex husband because she wanted her boys to see that she could remain civil with their dad even during the holidays.

His best friend Angela and her family were at home having Christmas and he really didn’t want to rain in their parade.

Everyone else he knew, everyone who surrounded him by day were having their own Christmas and he was just kind of—stuck.

The bar is decorated for Christmas, there are lights on the outside making the dark space a little bit brighter. There’s a Christmas tree in the corner, with different ornaments on it and there’s a stack of presents on the ground. Whether they are fake or not, Tim can’t really tell.

He turns on the stool and faces the stage where there is karaoke going on. A woman is up there, she is shorter but she has on high heeled boots. She has tan skin, and long curly brunette hair. She is smiling and nudging the guy next to her as the music starts.

She grabs the microphone, and starts singing making Tim freeze a little. The lyrics flash on the screen but the woman seems to be in her own little world. She is beautiful, and her voice is beautiful.

Tim is memorized as he watches her, her voice pulling him out of his seat and towards the stage.

All I want for Christmas is you.

Tim moves towards the stage, and stands in the crowd a little back but far enough up that he can still see her.

She is smiling and dancing around, and normally Tim wouldn’t be fawning over a woman especially after he just got out of a relationship. It took him a long time to get over his ex wife Isabel no matter how short lived the marriage was.

Oh baby, all I want for Christmas is you.

You, baby.

The woman looks out in the crowd, and her eyes meet Tim’s. She gives him a smile and then turns back to the crowd. He feels his heart beating in his chest as she finishes the song and puts the microphone down.

Tim quickly moves out of the crowd and heads back to the bar but stops short when he sees his seat is taken.

“Hey.” Says a voice behind him and he turns quickly to see the woman from the stage looking at him. “You ran away before I could get to you.”

“I didn’t run.” He argues. She just smiles at him, and holds out her hand.

“Lucy Chen. The resident karaoke master.” She says. Tim takes her hand, and shakes it and then he drops it wiping his sweaty palms on his jeans.

“Tim Bradford.” He says. Lucy tilts her head at him, and he gives her his best smile. “I haven’t seen you in here before.”

“I have been busy.” She says. “I kind of got dragged here tonight. What about you?” Tim opens his mouth to say same but he was alone. Utterly alone, and he didn’t want to sound pathetic to this beautiful woman.

Tim shrugs his shoulders, and looks around the bar. “Just hanging out.” He says.

“On Christmas Eve? You don’t have anywhere else to be?” Lucy asks and she looks curious. Tim really wishes he had a better answer for her.

“No.”

“Hmm.” Says Lucy. “How about I buy you a drink? Christmas treat.”

“You don’t know me.” Tim points out but he follows her anyway. Lucy turns back to look at him, a sparkle in her eyes.

“I don’t.” She agrees. “But I want to. It’s the Christmas season.” Tim supposes she has a point but—

“Are you sure? I’m a stranger.” He says. Lucy just laughs, and grabs his arm and leads her over to the bar. They settle down in the now empty stools, and Lucy orders a tequila shot and Tim orders a beer.

“You aren’t going to kill me or anything right?” Lucy asks him. Tim sputters out his beer, and Lucy laughs and hands him a napkin.

“No.” He says. “I’m a cop.” Lucy studies him for a minute before she takes her tequila shot.

“You do seem like a cop.” She says. “But you would know how to hide my body—”

“I’m not going to kill you.” He says drily. “Is this how you flirt with everyone?” Lucy taps the counter and the bartender slides her another tequila shot.

“Who says I’m flirting?” She asks. Tim nearly chokes on his beer again, and wipes at his chin.

“So what do you do?” He asks. “Are you just the karaoke master here?” Lucy laughs and shakes her head.

“No.” She says. “I do this on my spare time. I’m undecided right now, my parents want me to do one thing but I’m leaning towards a private investigator.”

“Oh.” Tim says. “Your parents don’t like that?” Lucy shakes her head, and sighs.

“No.” She replies. “They want what they want. I want to do something for me. I want to do what makes me happy.”

“As you should.” Tim says. “I don’t know you but you seem to be a good getter.”

“I try.” She says. “So do you sing Bradford? Or do I have to drag you up on stage?” Tim looks at her and she has a mischievous look in her eyes.

“I have a feeling whatever I say you will drag me up on stage.” He says. She grins at him, and pulls him up setting his beer aside.

“You would be correct.” She says. She pulls him up to the stage, and hands him a microphone. There are some cheers in the crowd, he’s guessing for Lucy but he can’t blame them.

The sound of the a familiar tune starting up, Lucy starts singing and looks over at Tim to join in. He does but he keeps his eyes on Lucy. He has never been this captivated by someone before, he has never felt this draw to someone. A stranger no less.

Tim hears the card cheering for Lucy (he knows it’s not for him), he sees some of the men have their eyes on Lucy.

And he can’t have that, he tugs on Lucy’s arm before the song ends and she drops the microphone and follows him.

She takes over once they are off the stage, and she leads him to the hallway. Her cheeks are flushed, and she’s smiling widely at Tim.

“Did you have fun?” She asks. Tim searches her face, not answering her question. He doesn’t know if it’s the beer he has in him. He doesn’t know if it’s the Christmas music playing in the background or maybe it’s the random mistletoe hanging above Lucy.

“You looked like you were having fun.” He says. She nods, and licks her lips as she looks at him.

“I was.” She says. She looks around the bar, and then back at him. “Are you going to kiss me? Or am I going to have to do it myself?”

Tim swallows hard, and then he is pulling Lucy towards him and their lips crash. It’s like the sea meeting the shore as he kisses her, he has never felt anything like this especially not with just a kiss.

She pulls back and there’s a grin on her face, as she looks up at the mistletoe above her. “Well—” He says softly.

“It was the mistletoe.” She whispers. Tim hums and wraps his arms around her waist, he certainly didn’t believe in love at first sight. But he knows he has a connection with Lucy, one that he didn’t even have with his ex wife.

“Sure.” He says. “Blame the mistletoe.” Lucy laughs, her brown eyes searching his face. And he knows that he’s going to be taking Lucy home, there’s just something electric about her.

“What are you thinking?” Lucy asks. Tim looks her over, and then leans in to kiss her again.

“That I came here alone but I won’t be leaving alone.” He says. Lucy swallows but her eyes light up, and she nods her head.

“I agree.”

“Good.”

He pulls back and takes her hand, she lets him lead her to the entrance of the bar.

And maybe this wouldn’t be such a bad Christmas after all.

***

Tim takes Lucy home, and they barely can keep their hands off of each other as he pushes her into the mattress and lets his mouth roam her body, she’s not a one night stand girl and yet here she was letting this beautiful man ravish her.

She moans as Tim’s mouth goes to her pussy, she grips the soft sheets with her fingertips as he pushes inside of her.

The truth is, she planned on being alone this Christmas and it was okay with her. All her friends had lives and families. And she was just—Lucy.

Her parents disapproved of her career and her now ex boyfriend was with her ex best friend. She had gone into the bar tonight without a plan and now—

And maybe it was stupid to come home with a complete stranger. But Tim was different, he was magnetic, he was broody, and cranky.

But he was also sweet, charming and handsome. Everything she needs in a man and everything she keeps missing out on.

Tim’s lips on her breast gets her out of her thoughts as she tips her head back.

This wasn’t like anything she has ever had, this was more and it was a shame this would probably be the only time she got it.

Her hands snake down his body, as he hovers over her. His blue eyes search her and she knows what is about to happen.

“Are you sure about this?” He asks. She nods her head unable to speak as he pushes inside of her. She groans holding his arms as he moves inside of her.

Fuck.

They don’t speak but there are noises. Lucy moans as her fingers dig into his skin. Tim presses kisses up and down her body. And she’s really not sure how long she is going to last she can usually gauge it but—

“Fuck.” She moans. Tim looks up at her with a wolfish grin on his face as he pulls out and then goes back in harder.

“You feel good Lucy.” He mumbles into the skin behind her ear. “So wet.”

Well damn.

She feels herself clench and her nails dig into his skin. She doesn’t care she’s leaving marks on a stranger’s skin—he would remember her that way.

She comes a few seconds later, and he helps her through muttering god knows what into her skin. He comes a few seconds later, and pulls out of her and then falls against his pillow.

“Wow.” She mutters.

“Mmm.”

“That was—”

“Yeah.”

There’s silence after that and Lucy knows she has to leave at some point but she doesn’t know what to say.

Tim reaches over on his bed side table and picks up his phone. “Oh.” He says. Lucy looks over at him.

“What?”

“It’s Christmas.” He says. “Um Merry Christmas.”

“Yeah.” She says. “Merry Christmas.

***

Tim rolls over in bed and feels the cold empty spot and a piece of paper. He sits up and looks at it.

It’s from Lucy, and it only has a few words on it.

Merry Christmas.

Sorry you are alone. I hope you have a good one.

Lucy.

***

One year later

Lucy looks around the bar, it’s busy as it usually is on Christmas. The owners always have some deal going.

Buy one get one free.

She is here for the karaoke but also him. The one man she couldn’t get out of her mind for an entire year.

The man she went home with and had mind blowing sex and then—

Her heart skips a beat when she sees a tall man walk in but as he gets closer Lucy knows it’s not him.

“Come on.” She mutters. “Show up.” She’s not sure what she would even say to Tim—but she knows she would say something.

“Are you going up there?” A voice asks from behind her. Lucy turns in her stool to see the bartender looking at her.

“Sure.” She says. “Yeah I’m going up.” He nods and she slides off the stool. She tucks some hair behind her ear nervously.

If only—if only the universe liked her.

“I don’t think he’s showing up.” The bartender says. Lucy sighs softly and just walks towards the stage.

It’s not like she was expecting to see him again—

She starts singing and soon her mind is off Tim as the crowd gets more into it.

Once again she was alone for Christmas, but it wasn’t so bad.

Or maybe it was.

She sings a couple of songs and then she leaves the stage. She pays her tab and then she walks out of the bar completely alone.

***

Tim walks into the bar and pauses at the doorway. He’s not even sure if he should go in. The chance of running into Lucy was not high. But—

There is a little voice inside his head that is telling him to walk inside and at least check. If she’s not there—

He steps inside the bar and looks around. It’s crowded like it was last year, he can barely see because of the dim lights. He looks towards the stage but sees a very drunk man singing.

Not Lucy.

He sighs and turns around and heads out the door. Maybe it wasn’t meant to be. Maybe it was just a chance encounter last year. She probably moved on—she probably didn’t even remember him.

He sighs as he goes to climb into his truck and head home. He could mope around at home once again on Christmas.

Maybe next year would be better.

***

Two years later

“He’s not here.” The bartender tells Lucy when she sits down. She looks up at him a confused look on her face.

“Who?”

“The man you went home with a few years ago. He’s not here.” The bartender says. “I haven’t seen him in awhile.”

“Oh.” Lucy says and she lets her shoulders fall a little. It’s not like she was expecting to see Tim but it would have been nice.

“Thanks.” She says. “How did you know I went home with him?” The bartender smiles and passes her a shot.

“You two were all over each other.” He says. “I was rooting for you.”

“Yeah.” Lucy says and looks around the bar. It’s the same as it has been for the last two years. Except there’s no handsome, grumpy cop. “Me too.”

“Maybe next Christmas.” The bartender says. “You never know.” Lucy sighs and takes a shot of her tequila shot.

Yeah maybe next year.

***

“She just left.” The bartender says. “Like an hour ago.” Tim turns to look at him, a little startled. He tries to school his face so he doesn’t show his disappointment. He was expecting to see Lucy but he at least wanted to make it into the bar unlike last year.

“Who?”

“Lucy.” The bartender tells him passing him a beer. “She was sitting right there.” He points to a stool next to Tim.

“Oh.”

“I think she had to go somewhere but man—” He shakes his head a little. “Only by an hour.”

Tim sighs and runs his fingers through his hair, he was starting to think this just wasn’t meant to be. Maybe being with Lucy was only suppose to be for one night.

Maybe he should just give up. The thing was he didn’t want to give up, he never felt this way about someone. He never wanted to see someone so bad again—and he missed her.

Only by an hour.

Ho ho

“Better luck next time.” The bartender says. Tim rolls his eyes and takes a sip of his beer.

Yeah maybe next year would be better.

***

Three years later

Tim turns around in circles in the bar trying to find Angela. She had invited him here tonight (of course). And he had reluctantly come but—

He makes his way up to the bar and sits down on the stool. The same bartender looks over at him with a small smile.

“I haven’t seen her tonight.” He says opening up a beer for Tim and passing it towards him. “But you never know.”

“I’m waiting for my friend.” Tim tells him. “I don’t think Lucy is coming.” The bartender shrug and Tim takes a sip of his beer.

And it was just another Christmas Eve where he is all alone.

***

Lucy stands at the entrance of the bar, it’s pretty late but she got held up at work and couldn’t get away. She stares at the dance floor but she figures Tim isn’t the type to dance. Her eyes go to the bar and it’s crowded but no Tim.

She doesn’t even know this man, but yet she still has a overwhelming feeling to see him again. She wants to know if what she felt the first time was actually real. She wanted to know if that spark that she felt deep inside her would come out if she ever did see him again. She steps out of the doorway and heads back to her car.

It just wasn’t meant to be this Christmas. And maybe it wasn’t going to be next Christmas.

But she couldn’t give up, not yet.

Next Christmas. She would find him next Christmas.

***

Four years later

Tim steps into the bar and makes his way to the bar before he can chicken out. He doesn’t plan on being here long. He just wants to get a beer and sit for a minute, his job had him running around and it was just exhausting.

He needs a rest and to relax.

He sits down at the bar, and nods at the bartender but it’s a girl this time. “Just a beer.” He tells her. She nods and goes to get it, she opens it and passes it to him. “Um have you seen a woman in here tonight?”

The girl raises her eyebrows at him. “I’ve seen a lot of woman in here.” She says.

“I mean.” Tim pauses and he’s not sure how to continue. “Her name is Lucy. She’s usually up there singing karaoke.”

The bartender nods knowingly. “Jake told me about you.” She says. “Tim?” Tim nods and the girl smiles at him.

“Yeah.”

“Is she a friend of yours?”

“Not exactly.” Tim says and it sounds so ridiculous. “I just wanted to know if she’s here—or.”

“I haven’t seen her.” The girl says. “But I will keep my eye out for her. Jake says you two have been coming here for last few years looking for one another.”

Tim shrugs his shoulders and runs his fingers through his hair. “It’s silly.” He downs his beer and then throws some money on the counter. “I gotta go.”  He walks away before the bartender can reply.

Next Christmas would be better. It just had to be.

***

“Are you Lucy?” Lucy looks up to see a girl staring at her. She has a washcloth in one hand. Lucy frowns but nods.

“Yeah.”

The girl nods and puts the washcloth down on the counter. “Someone was looking for you.” She says. “Tim.”

Lucy straightens up and looks at her. “He was here?” She asks. The girl nods, a smile on her face.

“He just left a few minutes ago. I’m surprised you didn’t run into him.” She says. Lucy feels her shoulders deflate.

He was here, they were so close yet so far away.

They missed each other by minutes—

Lucy has half a brain to go outside and look for him but he’s probably long gone by now and she doesn’t even know if he wants to see her.

Lucy gives a long suffering sigh—and looks down at the counter.

So close. Yet so far.

What a Christmas.

***

Five years later

Tim walks into the bar feeling a little defeated. It was once again Christmas Eve and he was alone, walking into the same bar he had for the last five years. He wasn’t giving up on finding Lucy again but—

Maybe he should.

It had been five years since he last laid eyes on her. Five long years and he has no idea what he would even say to her. They had a connection then who knows if they would have one now—

He makes his way to the bar, and sits down on one of the stools. He signals the bartender for a beer and then looks around the bar. It’s busy as usual and he’s glad they are keeping the Christmas spirit up.

He turns back to the bar, and he hears someone sit down next to him.

“Tequila shot.” A familiar voice says, one he hadn’t heard in five years. “Please.” He turns slowly because this couldn’t be real. This wasn’t real, this—

He looks at her just as her eyes meet his and her jaw drops. “Oh my god.” She says. “I—”

“I know.” Tim says. “Wow.” Lucy laughs and turns back to the bartender who is watching them. He passes Lucy a tequila shot and then points to an empty booth in the corner of the bar.

“You two have a lot of catching up to do.” He says. “Five years.” Lucy stands up first, and Tim follows feeling a little stunned.

Lucy slides into the booth and plays with her still full shot glass. “So.” She says looking over at him. “We meet again.”

Tim doesn’t know what to say, he feels like this is all a dream and Lucy is a mirage. “You know I came back to the bar the year after—” He pauses and Lucy pauses her movements with the glass.

“You did?” She asks. “So did I.” Tim stares at her, and a smile plays on her lips.

“We must have missed each other.” He says. “I—this is embarrassing but—” He pauses and she watches him closely.

“What?”

“I came back every year. I almost gave up but—” Lucy scoots closer to him, and he lets her.

“Me too.” She says. “I’m sorry I just left. I am not a one night stand kind of girl and I think I was scared.”

Tim shrugs his shoulders because he knows how she feels. He knows the connection they felt wasn’t fake.

It was real.

It was as real as she was in front of him.

“It’s okay.” He says. “I get it.” She smiles at him and scoots closer. He can smell her, he can feel her. Her warm brown eyes search his face, and he can tell she’s nervous.

“Last year,” She says. “I missed you by a few minutes.” Tim stares at her, and he’s thinking how he should of stayed last year.

“Really?” He asks. “I was starting to think I would never see you again, that it was too good to be true.”

“Me too.” She says and she leans forward putting a hand on his cheek. “I was beginning to think maybe we wouldn’t have the spark we had when we first met.”

Tim swallows and he could kiss her, he wants to kiss her. “And? Do you think we still have it?” He asks her softly. She doesn’t say anything just leans forward and kisses him. It’s soft at first and then he is pulling her onto his lap. She pulls away after a few minutes and he chases her lips a little wanting more.

“Yeah.” She says patting his cheek gently. “I think we still have it.” He stares at her and he wonders how this beautiful woman is interested in him. She doesn’t know him and—

“I want to do this right.” She says suddenly pulling him out of his thoughts. “I don’t want to sleep together and then go another five years without seeing each other.” He has the same thoughts and he just nods tightening his grip on her.

“If that’s what you want.” Lucy says. “If you don’t—”

“No.” He says quickly. “I like you Lucy. I have been wanting to see you for years. I really was about to give up but—”

“I know.” She says smiling at him. “So how about this. We get to know each other better and we go from there.”

Tim nods because he likes the sound of that— a lot.

“That sounds good.” Tim says reaching out to touch her face. She smiles at him and searches his face.

“I’m glad we finally found each other.” She says. He nods and leans forward to press a kiss to her forehead and then her lips.

He’s forever grateful that he met Lucy all those years ago. He’s grateful that he finally found her again.

And he has a feeling—he knows this is going to be a much better Christmas than the last.

***

Six years later

“Hey handsome.” A voice says behind Tim. He grins to himself before turning around and coming face to face with his favorite person. Lucy. “Fancy seeing you here.” Tim shakes his head in amusement and reaches out for her, she comes willingly and puts her hands on his chest.

“Did you come alone?” She asks a mischievous grin on her face. “Because I could use a karaoke partner.”

“My girlfriend is around here somewhere.” Tim says looking over Lucy’s head, as if he was looking for someone. She makes a soft noise, and he brings his eyes back to hers and he can’t help but grin at her. He came with her, they just got separated for a little bit. “Hey.”

“Hi.” She replies and she stands on her toes to press a kiss to his lips. “Do you want to be my karaoke partner?”

He does and he already has a plan to make this night extra special. The ring box in his pocket is a reminder of what he is about to do.

“I do.” He says. Lucy grins at him, and pulls him towards the stage. There’s some cheers and he stands there as she gets the song ready.

He watches as she starts the song, and then gives him a nudge so he starts singing. He does but like the first time, he doesn’t really sing he just watches her. The way she moves around the stage, the way she looks over at him with a smile on her face. It’s the smile she reserves for him and him only.

They had been together for a year, a magical, wonderful year and Tim knew Lucy was the one. She was the one he waited for, she was the one who got his heart beating every time she looked his way. The one who called him a day after Christmas to tell him she was waiting for him. They went on a date a few days after Christmas and they had their Nee Year’s kiss under the twinkling lights at the bar. After that they barely spent a day apart and Tim just knew. That Lucy was going to be it for him. He never felt so sure about anyone in his life and yet—

She was the one who he knows is the love of his life.

They went on their first date, took it a little slower this time to get to know one another. They fell into bed with each after their third date and had been together ever since.

And he was about to make it official, in the spot where they met and connected for the first time five years ago.

The song ends and there’s some cheers as Lucy goes to start the next song but Tim stops it and turns to look at her. She’s absolutely beautiful standing in the glow of the stage lights.

“Wait,” he says softly. “I have a question for you Lucy.” Lucy gives him a weird look but pauses what she is doing and waits for him to continue.

He turns to face her, ignoring the fact that there are people staring at him, and ignoring the fact his palms are sweaty. “We met in this bar five years ago. We were both lonely, and I think we just needed someone.” Lucy nods, her eyes never leaving his face. “I came back a year later but you weren’t here. I came back here two years later hoping to find you. But I missed you but an hour. And I kept trying, one year it was only by a few minutes.”

Lucy laughs a little, her eyes going to the crowd and then back to Tim. “And then last year I finally found you. We found each other. And—I was afraid that whatever spark we had was gone but—it wasn’t. I love you Lucy, I fell in love with you awhile ago and never fell out of it. You make me happy, you make me want to do better and be better.” He reaches into his pocket, and pulls out the ring box. Lucy makes a soft noise as he gets down on one knee, he can see her eyes are already full of tears. “You asked me to be your karaoke partner and now I’m asking you to be my wife so we can do this all the time. Together and for the rest of our lives. Will you marry me?” Lucy lets out a sound between a laugh and a sob, and he waits while she gets her composure.

“Yes.” She says. Tim feels his heart beat pick up as she holds out her hand, he slips the ring on it and then stands up and pulls Lucy to him.

“You are a sneaky one Tim Bradford.” She says looking up at him, there are still tears in her eyes but she smiling big and happy. “I should have known you don’t do karaoke.”

“I do with you.” He points out. She grins at him, and puts her hand on his cheek. He feels the cool metal of her ring on his skin. “I love you Lucy.”

Lucy grins again, and pulls him down for a kiss. “I love you too Tim.” There are a few cheers and then someone yelling for them to get off the stage. Tim leads Lucy off, and into the hallway.

“Oh it’s like deja vu.” She says looking around. She looks at her finger where her engagement ring sparkles. “Only better.”

“Much better.” He agrees. Lucy hums quietly, and he knows they are definitely going home together tonight. Their giant cal king bed is waiting for them, their cozy decorated house that Lucy insisted on decorating is waiting for them.

“Are you going to ask me?” Lucy asks. She kisses him before he can’t help answer, and it’s a slow, soft kiss the kind he knows will eventually go somewhere. It’s the one she gives him when he comes home from work and she’s waiting for him. It’s the one she gives him when they are about to fall asleep but neither of them are tired yet—and they want more.

“Ask you what?” He asks when she pulls back. He still holds onto her, and sways them a little. He will never be able to get enough of her. He’s so glad the universe decided to work in their favor last year because he’s not sure he’s ever been this happy.

“Ask me to go home with you.” She says. He gives her a smile, and then bends down to kiss her.

“Lucy, will you go home with me tonight and we can start planning the rest of our lives together.” He asks. She giggles loud and happy, and god this is going to be his best Christmas ever without a doubt.

“Yes.” She says. “I would love to.” He continues to sway her, and then he swoops down and kisses her because he can.

He gets to do this forever, for the rest of his life.

She giggles against his lips, and he knows this is going to be an amazing Christmas. He has the woman he loves more than anything by his side, and a warm cozy house waiting for them. And really that’s all he could ever want.

And neither of them would ever be alone on Christmas again.

He takes her hand, and she follows him to the entrance. He pauses at the door, and looks down at his watch just as it turns to midnight.

“Merry Christmas Luce.” He mutters into her hair. He feels her wrap herself around him, and he looks down at her.

His future wife.

His forever.

The girl he meant in a bar on Christmas Eve five years ago.

The love of his life.

“Merry Christmas Tim.”
