It was a beautiful Christmas Eve. Outside, the snow covered the ground and snowflakes were lightly falling. The house had been decorated with green and red Christmas lights. While Jack was in the living room finishing putting ornaments on the Christmas tree, Ennis was in the kitchen finishing baking Christmas cookies. This would be their first Christmas together with no problems and no one to tell them that it's wrong.
As Jack put the star on the top of the tree, Ennis walked into the living room. "That looks beautiful." He said with a smile.
"Thank you." Jack responded, kissing him on the cheek. "Those cookies smell good."
"You can have one if you want."
"I definitely will."
Later that day, it was starting to get darker outside and it was snowing a bit more now. Ennis was sitting on the couch in front of the Christmas tree admiring the lights and the snow outside. Jack came into the living room with hot chocolate and put it on the coffee table and then putting on the fire place before sitting next to Ennis on the couch. There was Christmas music playing from their record player. When looking out the windows, the snow was calmly falling with the mountains in the distance with snow on their peaks. It was a pretty sight.
"I wouldn't want this any other way." Jack said resting his head on Ennis's shoulder.
"Same for me." Ennis replied.
They were finally at peace. After all of these years, they were able to spend Christmas with each other, just the two of them. They didn't have to live in fear anymore. They had finally finished building their house in the mountains just in time for Christmas which was perfect timing.
"I"ll be right back." Jack said suddenly getting up from the couch.
"Where are you going?" Ennis asked a bit confused.
"You'll see." Jack replied with a smile as he walked over to the tree. He picked up a box that was sitting under it.
He walked back over to Ennis and handed him the box. "I got you a Christmas gift."
It was wrapped in a cute wrapping paper and it was in the shape of a box. When Ennis opened it, a jewelry box was revealed. He opened the box and their was a heart shaped lock it necklace in it. It read "Always and Forever" on the inside.
"I wanted to get you something nice." Jack said.
"I love it." Ennis replied kissing him on the cheek. "I really do."
After putting it on, he got up and started walking to their bedroom. He hid it under their bed when Jack wasn't looking. He came back with a wrapped rectangular gift and handed it to Jack. When he opened it, there was a painting of Brokeback Mountain that Ennis did.
"I didn't know you could paint." Jack said with a big smile on his face. "I love it!" He went to put it on the mantle of the fireplace. When he came back, he sat down in his spot on the couch and rested his head on Ennis's shoulder again.
"That necklace looks good on you."
"Thank you. You really chose the right thing."
The two men continued to look out the window watching the snow and listening to the fire crackle. After a while, they started to fall asleep knowing that they could celebrate Christmas in peace.
