Work Text:

MK had never been particularly close with most of her fellow castmates on Total Drama Island.

For the first half of her time spent there, she never formed any close bonds with much of anyone. The closest she got was Emma, who she spoke with maybe a total of 4 times. She only really had one friend from the cast, who she hasn't seen since the finale.

So, imagine her surprise when a party invite from her former teammate Bowie appeared in her mailbox one day.

MK frowned upon retrieving it from the mailbox. If there was one thing she hated more than people, it was parties. 3 straight hours of shitty gas station food, music that's just slightly too loud, and far too many people crammed in a shitty basement sounds like a nightmare to MK.

A party. For Christmas. Why was Bowie of all people throwing a party for the cast? Why for Christmas? Did he not have any friends and invited all of Total Drama to his party to make it feel somewhat alive? Did Raj and Wayne just REALLY miss everyone and coax him into making a reunion party?

Though, she knew if she didn't go, she'd be the only one not to show up.. and she didn't want to snub her friend out..

Oh what the hell. Let’s go.

--------

December 22nd, was it? That was today. Not a single nice thing to wear.

Was MK going to have to go out in her pajamas or something? There had to be something…

Oh, nice. A black spaghetti strap dress in the back of her closet. HELL no. MK could NOT wear something with her arms showing, it just didn’t feel right.

This was all she had though, and it would pair nice with her favorite red jacket..

Oh whatever.

MK was barely dressed for the party. She had on an old dress and a jacket that hasn’t been washed in several years falling just past her shoulders. Her hair was unbrushed and an absolute mess, cover oh-so discretely by her stupid beanie that also has yet to be washed. This party is going to suck.

It was a pretty long bike ride to Bowie’s house. Took about an hour and a half to get there. MK would have taken her car, but she still had to fix it after an incident from a couple months back..

Who cares about that though? She finally made it, and now she had through the next 3 hours the best she can.

MK knocked on the door, awaiting a response with zero eagerness. She heard a faint “GO OPEN THE FUCKING DOOR” before it actually did open, revealing her friend Julia.

They hadn’t talked in.. a long time. It had been months, and neither of them thought to text each other, or even exchange numbers. MK hoped to god things wouldn’t be too awkward.

“..Hi.”

“Oh, hey..”

The two stood in silence for a while, neither knew what to really say. The first few minutes after meeting back up with a friend are usually a little weird, maybe they just need to.. settle in.

“You gonna.. let me in or..-“

“Oh, she made it.” Bowie was on a couch, only slightly out of MK’s view.

“Might wanna look up you two!” She could see Raj a little too, who was sat next to Bowie with an arm around him. His other arm was by his mouth, covering up a giggle. What is he laughing about?

“Look up at- oh.” Of course.

Of course her first interaction with her only friend after several months had to start off  in the worst way possible. Of course there just so happened to be mistletoe at the top of the doorframe. OF COURSE.

The one time she decides to leave the house and DO SOMETHING! The one time she decides “Maybe I’ll try to be a bit more social!” Something HAS to happen to make her regret everything! Awesome!

“Ohhh shoot,” Wayne chimed in, also sprawled across the couch. “MK and Julia, on the train to SMOOCHTOWN!!!!!” the others in the room crowded around the couch, anticipating.

MK’s thoughts raced, but nothing came out of her mouth. She couldn’t find any words to say. What was going on?

“Uh.. I mean if- if you don’t want to, it’s- it’s fine but-“

Julia looked behind her. Everyone was staring, waiting for something to happen. “Ah what the hell.”

“..Huh-“ Before MK could react, she felt two warm hands on her face as Julia slowly pulled her in to kiss her. Oh my god, this was really happening.

MK shut her eyes, hearing the commotion around her pan out. She didn’t really care though, all she could focus on was what was in front of her. She wanted to wrap her arms around her, pull her in a little closer…

But soon enough, it was gone. Julia’s lipstick was smeared across her face. MK couldn’t do anything but stare up at her, wide eyed and completely red. Everyone had eyes on them. “..You-“

“Wanna come inside now?”

“..Sure.”

--------

The party went surprisingly smoothly after that. It felt a lot more like a regular hangout than a proper christmas party, and MK was fine with that.

She spent the whole time talking to Julia. It was nice, they even exchanged numbers. Odd how they forgot considering how phone addicted both of them are..

neither of the two brought up the kiss once in the 3 hours spent together. It was almost as if it never happened. Still, there was definitely tension between the two. MK could barely even hold eye contact.

Several hours passed, and MK was home. She couldn't stop replaying that scene in her head. Everytime she re-remembered it, this strange feeling popped up.

This feeling that was sort of overpowering.

...

Love.

MK was in love with Julia.

And Julia probably didn't give a damn about love at all.

What was she to even do? Should she hide these feelings? Try to avoid Julia until they go away? Talk to her???

...The last option is probably best.

Silently, MK grabbed her phone from off her nightstand. 2:43 A.M. Would she even be awake?

That didn't matter much to her, so she shot Julia a message.

                      Yo

Can we talk tmrw morning??

MK didn't have to wait very long for a response, only about a minute.

sure

wheres ur place again? 🤕🤕

--------

The morning came quicker than MK anticipated, despite the fact she hadn’t slept at all last night.

She looked a lot more presentable than she did at the party, surprisingly. MK was never big on makeup, but knew how to do the basic stuff. Some lipgloss, blush, and mascara should be enough to make her looks atleast decent.

She even dressed better, a freshly washed christmas sweater (she didn't have much else to work with) , some baggy jeans, MK even washed her beanie, which didn't end up evaporating. How lucky she was that her parents weren't home, imagine all the noise she made so early in the morning.

She wasn't sure why she was putting so much effort into this. Wasn't like anything real special was happening. Felt nice though, looking half decent.

When MK heard a knocking noise from across her house, she could barely get herself up and to the door.

Staring at her through the peephole was Julia, exactly on time. MK hoped Julia didn't notice her on her tippy-toes and opened the door.

"..Hi." Things were just as awkward as before the party.

"Can you let me in now? Cold as hell out here."

"I'm shutting the door on you." The two laughed, tension immediately broken. MK opened the door a little more, and Julia immediately scanned the room before her.

"This your house?"

"..Yes?? what kind of question is that??"

"Expected worse, honestly."

"What does that mean??" MK was a little nervous, though she could tell Julia was probably joking. She didn't wanna leave a bad impression. Why was that even a concern??

"You did your makeup?"

"Yeah. Got bored early in the morning, I guess.

You want anything? We got like.. soda and chips in the pantry, i guess. Maybe some other stuff." MK wasn't sure how much her parents would want her giving away their food to practically a stranger, but who cares? They're not here to see.

"I'm good. Just ate like half an hour ago. You still live with your parents, right?"

"..Yeah?"

"Where are they?"

"Off on some business trip, I guess. They told me they'd be gone until Christmas eve. Most of my time is spent alone, since my brother went off to college in the states."

"Oh sick. Fuckin' hated living with my parents. Always on my ass."

"Right??" The two talked until they reached MK's room, which was surprisingly clean.

"Was also expecting worse here.." Julia joked. MK let out a pathetic giggle before immediately flopping onto her bed.

"My mom used to make me clean my room before I invited people over. Carried that habit into now, I guess." That's a lie, but Julia didn't need to know that.

She sat on MK's bed next to her, examining the room. A small tv, a ps2 controller attached to it, Several band and Tyler, The Creator posters... It was a pretty packed room.

Julia glanced back at her shorter friend. She looked nervous. "..You alright?"

"..Huh? Oh, yeah!! Juuusssttt fine.." MK blinked, trying to quickly fix her expression.

Julia gave MK a nod and they sat in silence for a bit.

"..Ok fuck it i'll say it. Julia,"

MK finally spoke up, trying to stay calm. Anyone would be able to tell she wasn't, though, as she was completely flushed.

"When you.. When you kissed me the other day, was that like- was that serious?

Like, it's whatever if it wasn't, it's just that I've been thinking about it ever since it happened, and I'm just so confused and-"

"..Yeah."

Julia interupted her, a slight smile in her face. Her demeanor shifted as MK went on, she too looked a little nervous.

"It was uh- I just thought since we were under that mistletoe- uh." Julia didn't exactly have an explanation planned out..

"No- no it's fine!! You really meant it though, right? Cause i- i think i-" MK doesn't think she's ever been this nervous before. Feelings were hard to deal with.

"I think I like you."

"..You do?"

"Uhm.. Yeah, that feels right. I like you, Julia." MK pulled her hat down, covering her face after she said that. "..Im sorry, this is so stupid-"

"No, it's fine. I like you too." Julia nervously smiled, placing her hands on top of MK's in a half assed attempt to comfort the both of them.

"Oh." MK didn't really know what to say to that. She was feeling a lot of things, mostly excitement, but there was no real way for her to express it. "..You uh..

You wanna pretend there's aaanother mistletoe here?" MK shrugged, a dumb smile plastered across her red face.

"..Yeah. Sure."
