Chapter Text
A Cheek Kiss;
Violet sat at the bar in Molly’s, watching the coming and goings of the bar. She watches as Lizzie dances with a few members of Firehouse 51, her eyes roam the bar before constantly returning her gaze to Lizzie. She kept trying to avoid staring at her partner, she knew that falling for her partner was a bad idea, but there was just something about the way Lizzie moved that constantly drew her attention.
Finally dragging her attention back to her drink at the bar, Violet takes a sip of her beer.
“You know instead of staring at her, you could just ask her to dance with you.” Brett says from behind the bar, having seen the way Violet was staring at Lizzie.
“I don’t know what you are talking about.” Violet responds, bringing her eyes to meet Brett’s.
“I’m just saying, you two would make a cute couple.” Brett shrugs before her attention is drawn away by someone asking for a drink.
Alone again, Violet pauses to think about what Sylvie had said, she had never given much thought to dating women. She’s so caught up in her thoughts, that she doesn’t hear a body approach her.
“What’s a pretty girl like you, sitting at the bar alone?” A man’s voice sounds from Violet’s right, causing Violet to look at the man.
“Drinking and enjoying some time with co-workers.” Violet replies before turning her attention back to her drink.
“I’m Josh, how about you let me buy you a drink?” The man, now named Josh, asks, “After all, you are sitting alone.” Josh slurs.
“No thank you. I’m just enjoying my night.” Violet replies, not looking at Josh, hoping he will take the hint.
“I can make your night even more enjoyable, pretty girl.” Josh smirks, trying to wave Brett down.
“I’m not interested.” Violet responds before feeling a hand on her back. A familiar floral scent rushes her senses, a scent that brings a smile to Violet’s face. The hand on her back moves to her waist, before she feels the brush of lips on her cheek.
“Hey babe, who’s your friend?” Lizzie asks, her hand tightening on Violet’s hip.
“Just someone who wanted to buy me a drink, but I’m pretty sure that the next round was meant to be on you.” Violet answers, leaning back against Lizzie.
“That’s right love, I’m buying the next drink. You want your usual?” Lizzie asks before waving Sylvie down.
“I was going to buy this pretty girl a drink.” The man states, glaring at Lizzie.
“You shouldn’t hit on someone who is already taken.” Lizzie answers, smiling as Violet leans more heavily on her.
The man finally takes the hint, walking away from the pair. Lizzie fully expects Violet to move away from her, the last thing she expects is Violet to turn in her arms and kiss her cheek softly.
“Thank you for saving me from that man, Liz.” Violet says, her cheeks a light pink colour.
“Anytime Vi.” Lizzie states, keeping her eye on the man who is glaring at the pair. Leaning in closer to Violet’s ear. “I would let go, but that man is still staring at us.” Lizzie whispers. Violet nods before downing her drink.
“Are you ready to go? We can leave and spend the rest of the night watching bad TV shows about matchmaking.” Violet responds, earning a chuckle from Lizzie.
“A girl after my heart. Let’s just say goodbye to everyone and then we can leave.” Lizzie answers, sliding her hand into Violet’s and dragging her to say goodbye to the rest of the squad. Violet follows Lizzie around the bar, waving off the curious looks from the team before leaving the bar with Lizzie.
A Forehead Kiss;
A call had gone wrong, Violet watched helplessly as a patient lunged for Lizzie. Before the rest of the squad had managed to intervene, the patient had landed a couple of punches to Lizzie.
“I’m fine. It’s not the first time a patient has lashed out at me.” Violet hears Lizzie complain from inside the ambulance.
“Novak, we can’t be sure that he hasn’t done serious damage. So sit still and let us take you to the damn hospital.” Lieutenant Stella Kidd responds, causing a sigh from Lizzie and a chuckle from Violet. “Mikami, can you get us to Med ASAP?” Kidd asks, receiving a nod from Violet.
Pulling up to the hospital, Violet jumps out before opening the back of the rig to a very unamused Novak. Her expression changes into one of pleading.
“Don’t fucking look at me like that, you know this is protocol.” Violet states.
“Please, Violet. I don’t like being fussed over.” Lizzie replies.
“Just humor us, please?” Violet asks, turning to look at Stella who rolls her eyes.
“Firefighters, Paramedics, Police, Nurses and Doctors make the worst patients." Stella complains, before following the pair inside.
“Don’t we know it.” Violet answers, before handing Lizzie over to doctors. Turning to Lizzie, Violet smiles shyly. “I’ll come back and visit after my shift finishes.” Violet states, before wheeling the bed out of the room and back to the rig. Climbing back into the ambulance, Violet looks at Stella.
“She is one stubborn paramedic.” Violet whines, “but she is my partner.”
Stella chuckles before pulling out of the hospital. “We will need to discuss what happened during this call.” Stella states. “But it can wait until we actually know the damage done to Novak.”
“That sounds like a plan. He was drunk and lashed out at Lizzie.” Violet explains. “He caused that accident.” Violet adds as the pair pull back into the firehouse.
“Okay, we will discuss it in detail later. Let’s just hope we don’t get called out again.” Stella says with her fingers crossed. “Your shift finishes in half an hour.”
“Fingers crossed. I just want to check on her.” Violet answers.
Returning to the hospital, Violet walks towards the room she knows Lizzie is in. Violet stops dead in the doorway, her eyes dragging over Lizzie’s sleeping form. She takes note of the blueish colour that is beginning to colour Lizzie’s cheek, feeling a little guilty that she didn’t stop the man from hurting Lizzie. Entering the room, Violet places Lizzie’s bag on a spare chair in the room, before stepping up to Lizzie’s side. Brushing Lizzie’s hair back from her forehead, Violet places a soft kiss on Lizzie’s forehead.
“I’m sorry, Lizzie.” Violet whispers, before moving to pull a chair closer to the bed. Sitting down in the chair, Violet slides her hand into Lizzie’s and watches the monitors.
Hearing the door slide open, Violet looks towards the door. Dr. Hannah Asher stands in the doorway, motioning for Violet to follow her.
“Novak is fine, thankfully he didn’t do any major damage to her. She is going to be sore for a few days.” Hannah explains before glancing at Lizzie. “He landed a few decent punches to Lizzie’s abdomen. No internal bleeding. But some serious bruising."
“Thank you Hannah, when will she be discharged?” Violet asks, watching her partner closely.
“She’ll be discharged in the morning. She’ll be okay, Violet.” Hannah responds before placing her hand on Violet’s shoulder and squeezing softly.
Stepping back into the room, Violet smiles at the sight of Lizzie, now awake. Violet walks over to the bed, sitting down on the edge.
“How are you feeling?” Violet asks, reaching out for Lizzie’s hand.
“Feeling a little sore, but I’m okay.” Lizzie responds, sliding her hand into Violet’s. “When can I go home?”
“Asher said tomorrow morning.” Violet answers, smiling softly. “Do you want to get changed into something more comfy?” Violet asks, pointing to the bag sitting on the chair.
“Yes, please.” Lizzie answers, smiling as Violet lifts the bag onto the bed.
“I can leave so you can change.” Violet offers, chuckling at the look Lizzie shoots her. “Or do you need help getting changed?”
“I don’t need help, but you don’t have to leave.” Lizzie responds before pulling out a sweatshirt and a pair of leggings. She tries to reach behind her to undo the back of her gown. “Hey Vi, I may have lied about needing help. Can you undo the back of my gown please?” Lizzie asks, earning a nod from Violet, who stands and un ties the back of the gown.
After finally getting changed, Lizzie relaxes a little, her hand back in Violet’s. She smiles softly at the sight of Violet, her head laying on the edge of the bed, fast asleep. It hits her suddenly, that there is no one she’d rather have by her side than Violet.
A Neck Kiss;
After being punched during a call, Lizzie had been suffering from nightmares. Lizzie dreaded nightshifts now. She knew she had to sleep during nightshifts.
Violet knew about the nightmares, she knew there was something wrong with Lizzie. So waking up at 3am to find the bunk next to hers empty, Violet yawns before getting out of bed and walking around the firehouse. Once she’s checked all the normal hiding spots within the house, Violet swings past the locker room to grab a light jacket and blanket before taking the stairs to the roof.
“Figured I would find you out here.” Violet states, walking over to Lizzie, who is sitting near the edge of the roof.
“You should be asleep, Vi.” Lizzie responds, turning to look at Violet.
“So should you.” Violet wraps the blanket around Lizzie’s shoulders. “Do you want to talk about it?” Violet asks, sitting down next to Lizzie.
“Every night has been filled with nightmares since that man attacked me.” Lizzie shrugs, but her eyes give away how frustrated she really is.
“No-one should have to worry about going to work, let alone first responders.” Violet explains. The pair sit in silence for a little while, before Violet feels Lizzie’s head drop onto her shoulder. Violet smiles to herself, she knew she had fallen hard for Lizzie, but she wasn’t about to ruin the best relationship that she’s ever had. Feeling Lizzie’s breathing begin to slow, Violet gently shoves Lizzie before standing, her hand extended towards Lizzie.
“Come with me.” Violet whispers, smiling as Lizzie allows her to tug her to her feet.
“I’m not going to tell you to sleep, but I will be here if you need me, whether that is to hold you or listen to you.” Violet adds, leading the way back down the bunks.
“Can you hold me?” Lizzie mutters, sitting on the edge of her bed.
Violet’s eyes soften. “Whatever you want, Liz. How do you want to do this?” Violet questions. Lizzie tugs Violet to lay down on the bed before Lizzie swings her legs up onto the bed, curling into Violet’s side.
“Go to sleep. I’ll be here when you wake.” Violet whispers, one hand running through Lizzie’s hair, the other rubbing her forearm. Lizzie nods against Violet’s shoulder before curling closer, her face now tucked into Violet’s neck.
“Good night, Vi.” Lizzie whispers, her lips brushing Violet’s neck, causing Violet’s hands to stutter for a moment before resuming their action.
It’s early morning when Lizzie wakes, her arms wrapped tightly around her partner’s body, her face still tucked into Violet’s neck. She quickly notices that Violet’s arms are wrapped just as tightly around her. To content to move, Lizzie snuggles closer, her mind racing as she tries to figure out why she slept so well. Her heart stops for a second as she realises she has lost her heart to the person currently in her arms. If only she was strong enough to actually say something. Using her nose, she nudges Violet’s neck, her lips brushing the skin. She feels Violet stir before settling again. Content to follow Violet’s example, Lizzie places a shy kiss on Violet’s neck before closing her eyes and falling back to sleep.
A First Kiss;
Since that night in the bunks, where Violet held her all night, it had happened a couple more times, only instead of at the firehouse, Lizzie would make her way to Violet’s. Violet would open the door, with a soft smile, before opening the door wider and following Lizzie through her flat. However tonight, Violet found herself at Lizzie's door.
Knocking on the door of Lizzie’s apartment, Violet wrings her hands, waiting for her partner to open the door. The door opens to reveal Lizzie, who smiles softly before opening the door wider.
“Come on in, Vi.” Lizzie states, waiting until Violet is in her apartment before closing the door.
“Thanks, Lizzie.” Violet responds, her eyes roaming the room she’s currently standing in.
“What’s up?” Lizzie asks, coming to stand in front of Violet.
“I went for a drink at Molly’s and got hit on, once again.” Violet answers, moving to sit on the arm of the couch. “He tried to buy me a drink, and all I could think about was the last time I got hit on at Molly’s.” Violet starts, watching as Lizzie comes to stand in front of her.
“What about it?” Lizzie asks, keeping enough distance between the two so as to not crowd Violet.
“The way you came up behind me, and placed a soft kiss on my cheek. All I wanted was for you to be there again. To feel your lips against my cheek.” Violet whispers, her eyes down. “I’ve never felt that way about anyone I’ve dated before. I guess I’m a little unsure of where we stand.” Violet adds a little louder.
“What do you mean?” Lizzie questions, still keeping the distance between the two.
“I don’t think you know, but the day you got attacked, I kissed your forehead in the hospital while you were sleeping. I felt so guilty. I’m the paramedic in charge, I’m meant to protect you.” Violet starts, her eyes coming up to meet Lizzie’s. “That night that I held you while you slept, I felt you kiss my neck, I tried to push it down, but it made me feel warm and fuzzy.” Violet finishes, letting her eyes lock on Lizzie’s, waiting for a response.
“Oh, where do you want us to be standing?” Lizzie asks, her nerves showing.
“Depends on if you mean relationship wise or right now?” Violet questions with a cheeky smile.
“Either one.” Lizzie answers, her eyes dropping to Violet's lips.
“Relationship wise conversation can wait.” Violet whispers before reaching her hands out. “But right now, I want you to be standing closer.” Violet ends, tugging Lizzie closer by her hips.
“Okay, anything else you want right now?” Lizzie questions, her eyes searching Violet’s face.
“Lizzie?” Violet starts, waiting until Lizzie’s gaze locks with hers. “Please kiss me.” Violet pleads.
“Okay.” Lizzie steps even closer, her legs between Violet’s. Bringing her hands up, Lizzie tucks a piece of Violet’s hair behind her ear. Using the hand cradling Violet’s cheek, Lizzie brings her lips to Violet’s in a simple brush of their lips, before pulling back.
“Okay?” Lizzie mutters, receiving a nod from Violet. “I need verbal consent, Vi.”
“Okay.” Violet answers before chewing on her bottom lip. “Can we- Can you-” Violet stutters before taking a deep breath. She squeezes Lizzie’s hip to ground herself.
“Take your time, Vi.” Lizzie whispers into the space between them. Finally gathering herself, Violet moves one of her hands from Lizzie’s hip to Lizzie’s neck tracing her jaw.
“May I kiss you again?” Violet asks, her eyes drawn to Lizzie’s lips.
“Yes, you may.” Lizzie says, a sweet smile on her face. That smile drops as Violet tugs her closer by the hand on her jaw. Expecting a brush of lips, Lizzie is shocked when Violet captures her bottom lip between her own, causing a gentle push and pull of their lips.
Drawing back, Violet feels the colour rise to her cheeks.
“Okay,” Violet mumbles into space. “I know why I wanted you to be there. I wanted that kiss on my cheek to be real. I guess now it is real. At least I hope it’s real.” Violet ends, unsure of where things were going.
“It’s real, Vi.” Lizzie whispers. “I want this to be more than just a kiss.”
“Okay. I do too.” Violet grins. “However, I don't want to rush this. We still have to work together.”
“I get that. I don’t want to rush this either. So how about I order us some take out, pour us some wine and we watch a movie?” Lizzie asks, leaning forward to kiss Violet’s nose.
“Sounds perfect.” Violet responds. “Am I staying here tonight?” Violet asks, receiving an enthusiastic nod from the woman standing in front of her. “You know my order, so I’m going to head to my car and grab my bag.” Lizzie nods before drawing Violet in a slow kiss.
“Okay, is Chinese okay?” Lizzie asks after drawing back from the kiss.
“Perfect.” Violet answers, waiting for Lizzie to step back so she can get off the arm of the couch. “Liz, you need to actually move in order to order us dinner.” Violet mutters, earning a chuckle before Lizzie steps back from her. “Go get your stuff, I’ll order us dinner.”
Lizzie stands in the hallway watching as Violet exits her apartment before moving into the kitchen to order dinner.
A Make-Out;
Having returned to Lizzie’s apartment after grabbing her bag, Violet drops her bag in Lizzie's room before making her way into the kitchen. Lizzie’s back is turned to her, giving her the opportunity to walk up behind her, wrapping two arms around her waist, resting her chin on Lizzie’s shoulder. “Hey, did you order dinner?” Violet asks, her hands tightening around Lizzie’s waist.
“I did. It should be here in like 25 minutes. Did you want to change?” Lizzie replies, leaning back against Violet.
“Yeah, pour us wine and choose a movie?” Violet asks, before kissing Lizzie’s cheek and releasing her.
Stepping back into the living room, Violet has her hair tied up in a ponytail, dressed in a pair of leggings and a sweater, two sizes too big.
“So what are we watching?” Violet asks, smiling at Lizzie, chuckling as Lizzie whips around.
“Um, I just - wait, is that my sweater?” Lizzie asks, looking at the sweater Violet was wearing.
“Yeah, you left it at mine a couple of weeks ago. I had every intention of returning it, but it’s comfy.” Violet responds. “Now what movie are we watching?”
Lizzie lets her brain reconnect before turning to look at the TV. “I figured Grease was a safe bet.” Lizzie answers. “We talked about watching it together.”
“Grease is perfect.” Violet answers as the doorbell rings. “I’ll grab dinner.”
Violet returns to the living room with dinner, setting the boxes down on the coffee table, feeling two arms wrap around her waist.
“You look good in my sweater.” Lizzie mutters, having gained a level of confidence back.
“Lizzie, we need to eat.” Violet whines, her body leaning against Lizzie’s. “Chinese is not nice when cold.”
Lizzie chuckles before kissing a soft spot behind Violet’s ear. “Okay, but I want to cuddle during the movie, once we’ve finished eating.”
Violet agrees before picking up her meal and beginning to eat as the movie begins playing.
Pausing the movie, Lizzie packs away their leftovers as Violet brings their wine glasses back into the kitchen.
“Do you have tea?” Violet asks, smiling as Lizzie shows her where to find the tea.
“I started buying tea after we became friends.” Lizzie explains, watching as Violet makes herself a green tea, but also makes Lizzie a hot coco.
“Thank you, goregous.” Lizzie says as Violet returns to the couch with both mugs. Once both mugs are safely on the coffee table, Lizzie grabs Violet around the waist dragging her into her lap. Hearing Violet laugh, Lizzie smiles.
“You won’t be able to watch the movie, if I’m in your lap.” Violet explains.
“Yes I will.” Lizzie responds before pulling Violet to lay against her, her head on Lizzie’s shoulder.
“Okay.” Violet reaches for the remote, playing the movie.
Half an hour later, Lizzie’s hands start wandering up and down Violet’s back, causing Violet to giggle.
“That tickles, Liz.” Violet says between giggles. Lizzie smiles softly before running her hands down Violet’s back, her fingers slipping under the sweater, resting on bare skin. Violet sighs softly, before turning her head into Lizzie’s neck.
“You are making it really hard for me to keep my word about not rushing this.” Violet mutters against Lizzie’s neck.
“Do you want me to remove my hands?” Lizzie questions, earning a shake of Violet’s head.
“Sex is off the table currently, but I won’t say no to making out.” Violet whispers, Lizzie instantly agrees.
“So does that mean I can kiss you?” Lizzie asks with a playful smirk, her hands tightening on Violet’s waist. Watching Violet roll her eyes, Lizzie chuckles before her chuckle is cut short as Violet’s lips crash to hers. Violet moves her hands to Lizzie’s neck, her lips in a gentle push and pull with Lizzie’s. Violet gasps as Lizzie’s tongue pushes against the seam of Violet’s lips causing Lizzie to deepen the kiss. Pulling back from the kiss, Violet takes a deep breath, her hands sliding into blonde hair. Using the hands in blonde hair, Violet drags Lizzie into a deeper kiss, her hands tugging on the strands, feeling a moan against her lips.
Lizzie pulls back from Violet, with a groan. “Damn Vi.” Lizzie laughs, her eyes twinkling. Violet grins from ear to ear before untangling her hands from Lizzie’s hair to put both hands on either side on Lizzie’s head. Leaning down, Violet takes Lizzie’s bottom lip in between her own, nipping at the lip before soothing it with her tongue. Feeling one of Lizzie’s hands move up her back, Violet whimpers softly as that hand tangles in her hair, pulling her even closer. Removing her lips from Lizzie’s, Violet kisses a trail from Lizzie’s lips to her neck.
“Oh God, Violet.” Lizzie groans, her hands tightening in Vi’s hair.
“Marks?” Violet mumbles against Lizzie’s neck.
“Where I can hide them.” Lizzie responds, earning a nod from Violet, who continues her path down towards Lizzie’s clavicle. Violet sucks a bruise just under Lizzie’s collarbone, before soothing the area with her tongue. Pulling back to admire her work, Violet is dragged back up by the hand in her hair, her lips turning up in a smirk a second before Lizzie’s lips reconnect with her.
As the movie and makeout session comes to an end, Violet yawns. “I think we missed 75% of that movie.” Violet remarks, her eyes sparkling.
“I think we did, too.” Lizzie responds, her hands back under Violet’s sweater. “Shall we head to bed?”
Violet nods before shuffling away from Lizzie, standing from the couch and offering a hand to Lizzie. Lizzie allows her partner to tug her up from the couch, collecting the mugs from the coffee table and dropping them in the kitchen on the way to the bedroom.
Violet tugs her sweater over her head, changing into a t-shirt before removing her leggings and climbing into bed. Lizzie watches, knowing that while this isn't the first time she’s seen Violet in this level of undress, she knows she’s at least able to catch a glance. Lizzie smiles at the level of comfort Violet feels in her presence, before changing into a pair of sleep shorts and an old t-shirt. Climbing into bed next to Violet, Lizzie tugs Violet into her side, smiling as Violet curls into her side, her arm thrown across Lizzie’s waist.
“Goodnight Vi,” Lizzie whispers before kissing Violet’s head.
“Goodnight, Liz,” Violet whispers back, smiling at the feeling of Lizzie’s lips against her head.
