Work Text:

There he was again. Working with Luis Serra. The thought alone made his eyes roll. Luis had helped Leon save Ashley Graham which effectively made him free of charges. What Leon didn’t tell Luis is that he fought to have all Luis’ charges dropped. Leon didn’t say it, but he really liked Luis. As a friend (of course), and after spending time with him Leon convinced him to come work with him. Which didn’t take much.

There they were. In an abandoned building and fighting off zombies.

“These things are fucking disgusting.” Leon commented as he wiped off some blood on his face.

“Oh no, your pretty face.” Luis teased, of course. When has he missed the chance?

“Shut it. We got a mission to worry about, and we’re trapped in this damn house.”

As Leon observed his surroundings he noticed how everything seemed to be cleared out of the building. “Where are we?”

 “Beats me.”

Of course that was Luis’ answer. Not a care in the world. Just standing there, hair a mess, yet somehow still looks good…

Leon let out a scoff, “You’re such a pain.” He couldn’t deny the real amusement he got out of Luis. He was a funny guy, so Leon couldn’t help it.

“Looks like we’ll be stuck here for a while..”

Leon looked out the window to see the downpour. Great.

“Anyway, wanna play a game?” Luis asked Leon. A bright smile on his face. It was obvious he was trying to do something before he was too bored.

Leon crossed his arms over his chest, “like…?”

 “…truth or dare?”

 “What are we, twelve?”

Luis rolled his eyes at Leon’s comment. Although, there was no real annoyance. It seemed like Luis never could get mad at Leon…

 “You still there, gringo?”

Leon was snapped out of his thoughts as he met Luis’ gaze.

“Yeah, yeah. Can’t we just- talk?”

“You? Want to talk?” Luis couldn’t help the laugh that escaped him.

“What’s so funny?” Leon had obviously taken offense to Luis laughing about him wanting to talk.

What was wrong with him wanting to talk? He’s a social guy… right?

“I don’t think you’ve said more than three word to me until now.” Luis leaned forward. He was leaning on the front door, his foot crossed over the other.

 “Dramatic.”

“No, really!” Luis persisted with a smile on his face, “I swear you don’t say more than commands to me on missions.”

Leon narrowed his eyes, “oh, come on.” He scoffed.

Luis just laughed and shook his head; it was obvious he found the whole situation amusing.

Leon, on the other hand, couldn’t help but think. Did he really do that? Nothing but order Luis around… wow. He was a dick.

“How come you never get annoyed?”

 “Annoyed?”

“I’m always ordering you around. You never have gotten… mad.” Leon observed.

Luis shrugged, “I guess I don’t get mad easily.”

 Of course he didn’t.

As Leon put his head down he noticed the dark spot on Luis’ jacket.

 “What’s that?”

Luis looked down, “looks like blood.”

 “blood?!”

Luis looked a little shocked by Leon’s reaction, “Yeah…?”

 “Are you hurt?”

“I don’t think so?” Luis began to take off his jacket.

As he did, he revealed a gash left on his abdomen. As soon as Leon saw it he instantly sat up straight.

 “What the hell, Luis?”

“You’re acting like I did it on purpose?”

Leon lifted up his shirt to asses the wound, “I know you didn’t, but- you didn’t feel anything?”

“It’s not that bad, cowboy. The worst is that it’ll need a few stitches.”

Leon couldn’t believe what he was hearing. How could Luis be so careless? Even after almost dying, even after he was nearly killed. After Leon almost lost him.

“Hey, you still with me?” Luis waved his hand in front of Leon’s eyes.

“How could you be so reckless?”

 “What?”

“You’re so reckless!” Leon scolded, “I mean- you didn’t even feel this bleeding gash on your side? How?!”

Leon continued as he tried his best to stop the bleeding and dress the wound, “you can’t keep this up. I swear you get a new wound every damn day. I can’t- I can’t keep watching you get hurt over and over again. It’s like I’m about to lose you all over again, and I-”

 “Breathe, Leon.”

Leon took a breath as his arms fell limp by his sides. He sat back on a wooden stool, “I can’t have that happen again.”

After a beat of silence Luis spoke up, “The thing with Krauser?”

 “Obviously!”

“That was years ago, Leon. I know it was stressful for you, but it won’t happen again.” Luis tried his best to comfort Leon.

“How would you know? Here you are; bleeding in front of me, and you’re gonna tell me it’s not going to happen again?” Leon snapped.

It was obvious he was struggling. He couldn’t help the anger that coursed through him. How could Luis be so stupid? How could he not realize that every single time Leon watches him get hurt is like a punch in the gut.

“I don’t get it, Leon. It was a while ago now, and we’ve had worse missions.”

“No, you don’t-” Leon paused to breathe, “I actually thought you were gone. That I was never gonna see you again. I… I thought that it was the last time I would ever get to say something to you, and I didn’t even say!-”

Leon stopped himself. His eyes widened; he never got to say ‘I love you’.

“Say…?” Luis tried to prompt Leon.

“That… that I really care about you.”

“…I know you do. You’re my best friend.”

That hurt. Probably more than Leon could say. Yeah, obviously Luis was his best friend, but Leon couldn’t deny the pang of sadness that flowed through him after Luis’ words.

“I know. You’re mine too.”
