Work Text:
The Toymaker was very gifted when it came to making things. Games, toys, puzzles, it all came so naturally for him. But affection was something that she could struggle with a bit. Words and gifts were easy, but other things like planning dates and the like weren’t. Which is why this would come as a surprise for his beloved. A welcome one, she hoped.
It wasn’t like it was anything fancy. Just a simple movie date, nothing else. It wasn’t like they hadn’t watched movies together before. The only thing that made this special was the date. Not that he often paid much mind to days like this. But he felt like for once he perhaps should.
He sat on the couch, a gift placed gently on the table in front of her. Waiting. She was certain Caspian would be there soon, and he really hoped he had made something ze liked. The title screen to some romance movie flickered on the TV, waiting for someone to unpause it. It was then that a sound caught his attention, and he turned his head to the entrance of the room.
Her lover walked in then, and it was like all the lights had suddenly dimmed. There was nothing brighter in the room than zem, at least in his eyes. Nothing else mattered now that ze was here.
“Hello, my love.” The Toymaker’s voice rang out, a German accent lacing through his words. Typically the normal for him, though not always. Oh well, it didn’t matter what he sounded like. He was simply happy to see his beloved.
“This looks… special.” Caspian’s eyes glanced around the room before falling back onto the Toymaker. “What exactly is it that you have up your sleeve today?” The Toymaker’s laugh caught zeir attention, and ze smiled back at him.
“Am I not allowed to simply plan something for you, my love? I know how stressed you have been lately. I thought this might be good for you.” Not entirely a lie, though… not exactly the entire truth. There was something special about the day, but just for her. He had no mind of telling Caspian exactly what was going on.
“...If that’s what you say, then. A movie?” Zeir gaze danced back up, landing on the television with the movie screen paused on it. “I don’t think we’ve seen this one before, right?”
The Toymaker nodded, attention back on the screen. “Correct. Come, sit. I have something for you.” This seemed to pique the interest of the person standing in the entrance of the room, and ze sat down next to him, attention fully on him.
“Something for me? What is it, then?” Upon being directed at the box on the table, ze took it, opening it. A small gasp escaped zeir throat as ze pulled out what was contained inside. Two simple plush dolls, hands pressed together as though they were holding them. But it wasn’t that had had zeir eyes alight with joy. It was the appearance of these dolls. One looked mostly like zem… and the other like the Toymaker.
“I thought you would like them.” The voice was quieter than usual, and Caspian lifted zeir head to look at her.
“I do. I love them. And I love you.” The Toymaker smiled back.
“I love you too.” And with that, they lapsed into silence, spending the rest of the night together, as close as the dolls he had made were.
