Work Text:
After so much pampering the money ran out, Pyro had promised a lot and ended up delivering little, she tried to appear as if she had enough money to help pay for his experiments, she tried to keep up this lie for a long time but couldn't but she knew that maybe this would happen someday because she saw why a few days before he found out she had taken money from where she didn't have any. But she tried to continue, all she needed was more time to think about what to do, but it wasn't fast enough. Great, not only was she in debt and Medic now hated her for lying. Living at your workplace had its benefits, the good thing was that you didn't have to worry about rent, but the downside was that Medic also lived here and what would happen when they met? Pyro didn't even want to imagine this scenario but it was inevitable that it would happen, she fled to her room when he discovered all her lies. Her room was a small refuge but not eternal, what would she say to him? Better nothing, try to ignore it, maybe? But she enjoyed being around him so much, it was very rare to find someone who didn't care about her gigantic love for fire but now finding someone who basically understood her was very special, okay he doesn't see fire the same way Pyro does but they both share a love for what other people would call 'morbid'. They both have their own worlds that only they can understand. She never thought she would find someone like her, and that was when she created this dream of one day dating him. She knew it would be a game of all or nothing, and she thought that pampering him with gifts and empty promises was a safe path. She lost the game, a game of love in which the stakes were very high.
It was then that a letter slid under the door, even though I was very reluctant, curiosity and a small ember of hope spoke louder.
I'm not mad at you, I just want to talk
Pyro was shaking but it seems that the ember of hope lit up to a small fire so she got up and grabbed the doorknob, but before opening it she took a breath trying to catch her breath and decided to answer. It was Medic but he looked a little worried
"I am really sorry"
Medic entered her room and she closed the door, Medic was one of the only people she let into her room
“I’m not mad at you, I’m just curious as to why you did this.”
Medic has already experienced a lot in life, but having someone who cared so much about him to the point of owing money to help him with his projects that everyone insisted on saying was crazy was something he had never seen.
And he wonders why he cares, he felt really bad when he saw how shaken Pyro was when he discovered her fake pampering, usually he didn't care much about that kind of thing since he doesn't usually comfort others, partly because he's not good at dealing with these things related to feelings and partly because he doesn't care about that kind of thing, but seeing someone he had already grown intimate with emotionally hurt shook him but the mystery still followed since even when other people he was intimate with got hurt he didn't usually get as bad as he did today.
“Because I….”
Pyro was literally sweating cold but thanks to her suit Medic didn't notice so she tried to tell him how she felt, she had to be smart in this all or nothing game, a risky game with high stakes. Since she had lied to him she decided to use another strategy, to be honest.
“I wanted to see you happy and create intimacy and trust, I-I like you a lot, because you are one of the only ones who doesn’t mind my fascination with fire and never judges the things I do as insane, and that’s why I love spending time with you. I can be myself around you and trust you and I thought there was no one in the world to trust but you showed me that I can trust someone, and I want more, I want more time with you, more intimacy and more trust. You pampered me so much with everything you have in your spirit and I don’t want to have a withdrawal crisis.”
Pyro regrets having spoken, foolish, useless, why did the thought of consequences only come to her now? She always says more than she should, she should know that, she isolates herself from everyone to avoid saying more than she should, idiot
Medic stood silently looking ahead seemingly lost in his thoughts
It took Medic a while to understand that this was a confession of love, Medic had already stopped to think if he would date one day but he rejected this idea because he was afraid of suffering and love is trust and so many people have hurt him in this world because he trusted too much and he doesn't want to feel the pain of betrayal ever again but Pyro also knew this pain so maybe she was merciful with his feelings. But there was another issue he preferred to be lonely but being lonely means freedom and solitude and he had lived in solitude for a long time and because of that the feeling of emptiness began to bite his spirit, also Pyro would not stop him from continuing his experiments or being his way and it was also nice to have Pyro as a helper and it was also nice the nights when Medic helped her build fires and a relationship maybe meant being able to spend more time with her so maybe it was a good idea.
Medic would love to feel safe and protected and the thought of having these reciprocal feelings shared with Pyro was something that excited him and filled him with happiness and hope, leaving his spirit immersed in a feeling of peace just thinking about the idea of having a shared life.
Medic took Pyro's hand and squeezed it tightly
“I like you too, and I'm tired of being alone and it would be a pleasure to have you by my side, and I also wanted to trust someone”
Medic didn't say much because he wasn't very good at these feelings things, he hid them for so long, even from himself and letting them out and leaving them exposed to someone was difficult but he hoped that at least it was clear enough for Pyro to understand him.
“Do you like me after I lied to you?”
“Of course, you just wanted to help me.”
Pyro was basically swimming in sweat, what should she say now? Ask him out, Pyro was so uncertain and her fear was making her breathe heavily.
“Do you want to date me?”
Medic was more daring in the game and spoke, he came out very dry because of his tension and at a glance it seemed like he was fine but with a sharp look you would see that his breathing was a little heavier. Medic was insulting himself internally for coming out so dry, but Pyro didn't notice his distress much because he is good at appearing to be fine. But that didn't matter because now the game was Pyro's turn and Pyro gathered his strength and made his final move.
Pyro simply hugged him, she didn't know what to say and she had dreamed many nights about doing this and she also released all her confused emotions in it, she had always been afraid to show her feelings but love means trust and she let herself be pampered by her own feelings. Medic became more rigid than he was and it took him a while to process everything that had happened. It was too fast for him and he hadn't expected it, what should he do? Maybe he should let his emotions spill out in the hug. The two pampered each other with mutual trust, the way they both always wanted. The all or nothing game that had high stakes ended with both of them winning.
