Proximity

Summary:

The last thing you expected on a random Tuesday was your boyfriend's weird new friend innsisting you follow him claiming you were under arrest for suspicion of being the second Kira. Turns out, your boyfriend's weird new friend was the detective L. Now you're under constant 24/7 surveillance with a man you'd practically just met and none of you are happy about it.

God you wished it had been a normal Tuesday.

Notes:

Did I spontaneously stay up literally all night writing these first three chapters? I most certainly did.
I do want to apologize in advance though because I literally just got into Death Note so if anyone seems out of character, I'm sorry.
We're pretending Light would be a good boyfriend for this.
If there are any stupid mistakes lets just blame it on staying up all night and being too excited to wait to get this posted

Chapter Text

The room was completely silent. So silent it felt way too loud. Shock, disbelief, Anger, and indifference painted the various faces around you. As for you? Well, you were downright fuming.

“You've got to be kidding Ryuzaki.” Soichiro Yagami spoke up first.

“I can assure you I am not.” L, who you had just met mere days ago responded.

At least you had them on your side it seemed. You were honestly very relieved they were proving L's plan was as insane as it sounded.

“Does Light even know about this?” Soichiro demanded. You could always count on him to have your back at least. If you were able to, you would have run over to give him a big old hug.

L, or rather Ryuzaki, shook his head. “I was hoping you’d break the news to him. That feels easier.”

You wanted to punch him. Was punching him an option? The last 15 minutes had been horrible and you desperately wanted to leave. But at this point you still didn't dare speak. Ryuzaki had made it clear that you didn't have much of a say in the matter.

“You expect me to tell him? Why don't you let her? Or, better yet, why don't you since it was your decision.”

You immediately shook your head. As much as you wanted to talk to Light, you knew he'd be pissed at the situation. Even if you knew he wouldn't be mad at you, you still didn't want to be the one to tell him.

Personally, you were on team Ryuzaki telling him since it was his shitty plan.

“Alright then.”

Before you even had the chance to protest, L reached for his phone and started calling Light. Well, just fuck my opinion then, you thought angrily.

Punching this man was seriously getting more and more tempting.

“Hello?”

God dammit, why couldn't he have been busy in class or something.

Ryuzaki glanced at you then back at the phone prompting you to speak.

“Uh, hey Light.” God this was so awkward.

“Y/n? Where are you? I couldn't find you at lunch today and you weren't answering your phone.” Sure enough, he did sound a bit worried, but you could hear the relief in his voice from knowing you're okay.

You sent Ryuzaki the most hateful glare you could muster. “Why don't you let your good friend Ryuzaki explain that to you"

“What?” The poor guy just sounded so lost at this point. You would feel bad for him if you weren't too busy feeling bad for yourself. “Is he there with you?”

“Yes,” the man in question responded. He sounded so casual as if this was just a normal Tuesday afternoon. Ugh, you wished it had been just a normal Tuesday afternoon.

“Where are you guys? Why is Y/n there?” You could tell he was getting more upset, understandably. When this was over you were going to make the best cake ever for him and his dad for defending you. You'd write ‘Fuck L’ on top and it would be beautiful.

“We're at the task force building. She's here because she's being put under 24/7 surveillance due to suspicion of her being the second Kira.”

If you rolled your eyes any more they just might roll out and roll away. Maybe you'd add a poorly drawn frosting picture of L's face onto the cake just so you could stab it in. Buttercream flowers would look nice too. Thinking about a cake - or literally anything else - was far more appealing than thinking about the situation you were in.

“Ryuzaki, are you insane?!” There it is. Light's definitely going to get the biggest piece of cake for defending you. “She has absolutely nothing to do with this. You know that.”

“Well, considering that you are Kira-”

Soichiro cut him off with a glare. “Considering you're possibly Kira,” L corrected, “and the fact that she is your girlfriend, there is reason to be suspicious is there not?”

You still couldn't believe Light was a suspect in the first place, but you were even more surprised that suspicion extended to you. You barely had time to do anything but school and sleep. If it weren't for lunches on campus and studying you and Light most likely would only get to see each other on weekends.

Sure, you'd go over to study, his family adored you, but that was literally all you had time for. Who would have thought that weird guy from the university entrance ceremony was actually L? Now you know why he hung around Light so much.

When you had headed to one of your classes earlier, the last thing you had expected was Light's weird new friend to approach you to insist you follow him because you were now a suspect. You almost hadn't followed him, but something told you he was serious.

You had always sensed something off about him. He stood out on campus and his relationship with Light in general had seemed off. You'd probably said maybe two words total to him before today.

“Ryuzaki, you seriously have no reason to suspect Y/n. It's not fair to her. I know you're suspicious of me, but she shouldn't have to be dragged into it.” Light sounded like he was trying to stay calm. You couldn't help but be a little disappointed because you really wanted him to go off on Ryuzaki.

“I can't help but agree Ryuzaki, This does seem a little extreme,” the youngest looking member of the task force spoke up with time. You hadn't gotten his name yet.

L just sighed. “If there's even a 1% chance that Y/n could be Kira then we need to know. This is the easiest way to do it.”

“seriously? This is the easiest way? You're the greatest detective ever and you still couldn't think of a better option?” You finally snapped.

“What exactly is your plan?” Light asked.

Well, this is it. If Light was already mad, he was about to explode.

“I think it would be easier to explain in person. How fast can you get here?”

You genuinely weren't sure if you were relieved or terrified that you'd have to wait even longer to explain the situation.

“Give me ten minutes and I'll be there.”

“Alright.” Ryuzaki closed his phone, ending the call.

Ten minutes seemed somehow too short yet far too long at the same time. Then again, at least it gave you a little bit of time to mentally prepare.

Beside you Ryuzaki stood with his usual hunch looking completely unbothered. Most of the task force had turned away to distract themselves in work once again. Only Light's father still remained facing you guys. The disbelief was still very clear on the man's face.

He sure would make a good future father in law at least. It warmed your heart to see him so protective of you. He surely would have fought harder if he had been able to and that knowledge made you feel a whole lot better.

You averted your gaze from the man and settled on just looking down and fidgeting with the hem of your shirt. Light better hurry.

“Would you like some cake?”

“Huh?” Out of all the things you expected to hear, that was at the very bottom of the list. Of course you wanted cake. Who wouldn't want cake.

“You look like you want some cake, here.”

Out of the corner of your eye you saw Ryuzaki's pale hand reaching out holding a small plate. Where on earth did he even get that?

The cake was so tempting. You almost said yes and reached out.

Almost.

Instead you chose to glare up at the man as angrily as you could muster. He made absolutely no reaction and simply glanced back down at the cake as if to signal for you to take it.

It took all your willpower not to grab it and shove it in his face. You had promised him you wouldn't make this easy and you certainly wouldn't play nice. He could keep his damn cake.

“Alright, more for me then.”

Asshole.

Deciding not to give him another second of your time you turned away and faced Soichiro.

He looked so apologetic that you almost wanted to comfort him and he wasn't even the one stuck with Ryuzaki.

“How do you think Light will react?” You asked him.

He sighed. That pretty much summed it up all right.

“Not well I'm sure. I wouldn’t blame him at all. Ryuzaki has some interesting methods and I hate to see you getting caught up in it. Light cares about you a whole lot and I hope you know that we all do too.”

This man was so kind, Light was so lucky to have a father like that.

“Is he always this insufferable?” You pointed right at Ryuzaki.

Soichiro sighed again and you finally cracked a smile.

“What are your plans to deal with school? Did he even take the time to figure out a plan for you?”

You hadn't even thought that far yet. Oops. You were too busy cursing and arguing with Ryuzaki to stop and think.

“I-”

“Yes, the university has been notified that she'll be unable to attend for a while. I made arrangements to guarantee this doesn't negatively affect her studies.” Ryuzaki cut you off to answer for you.

You wanted to be angry at the interruption, but you were far too relieved to learn there was a plan. Not even the task force would be able to protect Ryuzaki from your fury if he fucked up your education you had worked so insanely hard for.

“I still just don’t understand why this is necessary. You're suspicious of Light yet you've never gone to such extreme measures.” Soichiro argued, clearly still not ready to let it go. You were once again overcome with the urge to hug the man.

You finally glanced back at Ryuzaki. He was lazily shoving a forkful of cake into his mouth. “Well,” he started, swallowing his bite of cake. “I haven't ruled it out as an option. She just seemed far more likely to slip up.” He gestured at you with his fork.

Fucking prick.

You were ready to lean over to snatch his fork and just stab him with it. Normally you weren't a violent person, but for this guy? You'd surely make exceptions. Soichiro must have read your mind because he lightly set his hand on your shoulder and gave you a stern look.

This man is so very dad.

Unfortunately his dad look worked on you so instead you just glared and muttered under your breath.

“And to be honest, she isn't doing a great job of acting like she's not a killer.”

Well, there goes your self control.

“I'm not a killer, but you better believe I'm about to be you asshole!”

Ryuzaki was so lucky Soichiro's grip tightened on your shoulder as he held you back.

“At first I was worried for her safety, but Ryuzaki I Think it's yours we should be worried about,” a voice spoke out from the desk with a laugh. It was the youngest member again.

“I can assure you I will be fine. Besides, there's cameras everywhere and if she does end up doing something then you all will know she is the second Kira.” He spoke out between another bite of cake.

You weren't sure which angered you more, him not even considering you a threat, or him just standing there nonchalantly eating. By this point he had almost finished the cake.

Maybe you should have accepted the cake after all. Being petty sure had its downside sometimes. Oh well, the cake you'd bake For Soichiro and Light the second you got out of here would be far better. Maybe you'd ask RyuzakI what his favorite kind of cake was, make that, and then not let him have any.

Maybe you were going insane already because you had never once thought about cake this much. God damnit.

Finishing his cake, Ryuzaki must have decided he was over standing and climbed into a chair. You'd seen him sit before, but somehow this felt so much worse. Why was he shaped that way?

He noticed your staring much to your dismay, but he said nothing. Soichiro had at some point let go of your shoulder and now stood checking his phone.

The rest of the task force had continued busying themselves around the screens, some pointedly not looking your way.

What else had Ryuzaki done to make this feel semi casual? You couldn't believe he was the world's greatest detective.

A small wave of something, embarrassment perhaps, washed over you. He was far younger than you would have ever guessed. Here you were, only a few years younger than him, yet he was apparently a genius.

Sometimes you felt insecure knowing how insanely smart your boyfriend was, but this was somehow worse. Ryuzaki - L - had accomplished so much, yet you had barely scraped by enough to make it into the same university as Light.

Light had always been kind about it, well, he had been kind after you guys had gotten together, but it still made you insecure on occasion. Turns out getting essentially kidnapped by Light's weird friend who turned out to be the world famous L was one of those occasions.

You desperately wanted this situation to be over. How on earth were you a suspect of being the second Kira? Was it only because of Light being a suspect, another fact you could barely wrap your head around, or was there something else that pointed to you?

You couldn't think of a single other thing. You knew you weren’t the second Kira and there was no way Light could be Kira so what were you missing? What did Ryuzaki see that you missed?

Maybe threatening him had been a poor idea. You were suddenly very grateful that Soichiro had held you back. On the bright side you knew you were innocent so you didn't have to worry too much. All you had to worry about was how to prove it.

Unfortunately, Ryuzaki was the one who came up with the plan and you had no say at all. It was kind of scary how much this one man could get away with. What would happen to you if he did decide you were the second Kira?

A loud door banging open accompanied by the sound of rushed footsteps pulled you out of your thoughts.

“I'm here. Now explain what's goi- What the fuck Ryuzaki?”

You turned immediately to face your boyfriend. Suddenly you were filled with nervousness and almost shyness. You knew his anger wasn't directed towards you, but somehow it felt like your fault.

The start of an apology, for what you weren't sure, was on the tip of your tongue. However, Ryuzaki spoke up before you had the chance.

“Like I explained on the phone, she's under 24/7 surveillance due to suspicion of being the second Kira.” He spoke as if he was annoyed he had to repeat himself.

Light quickly rushed over to you, his arm immediately slid around your waist. He pulled you close to him protectively. It was nice. You almost wanted to cry in relief, something you wouldn't have expected.

“You can't be serious! This is insane even for you.” Light was almost yelling. You could see the task force trying to look like they weren't listening in the background. Well, you certainly didn't blame them. In their place you would 100% be doing the same thing.

Light's grip tightened around you and he quickly leaned down to kiss the top of your head in reassurance. He knew you didn't like seeing him - or men in general - yell and you appreciated his small act of comfort. Though you had to admit, you really really wanted Light to yell at Ryuzaki right now.

You dared to have the tiniest sliver of hope in Light getting you out of this mess. He was scarily good with people and you certainly would use that to your advantage in this case.

“I assure you I'm very serious.”

You could feel Light's grip tighten once again, though this time it was in anger. Normally you wouldn't condone fighting, but Ryuzaki was slowly making all your morals slip away.

God you hoped Light punched that sleep deprived asshole.

“She's my girlfriend . I don't want her anywhere near you. Are you trying to steal her for yourself? Is this your fucked up way to get back at me for not being Kira?!”

You leaned a little more into Light. He was going to get a big old smooch after this was all over. You almost wanted to be upset at Light for implying that you were able to be ‘stolen’ but you knew it was directed at the other man and not you.

Ryuzaki sighed. “I can assure you that isn't my intention. I have no interest in trying to take your girlfriend. She is rather rude after all,” you sent another scalding glare his way. “She will be released as soon as we can guarantee she isn't the second Kira. Now, if you two are done throwing a tantrum I have some work to do.”

Your jaw dropped at the sheer audacity.

“Excuse me? What is wrong with you?” You stepped forward, Light letting you go without a fight. Ryuzaki just stared up at you from his perch on the chair. He looked bored. Bored. You were enraged. “You know what? At this point I don't even care about the 24/7 surveillance. I'll put up with it willingly, but I refuse to be stuck with you . Have one of them do it.” You gestured at the rest of the task force.

“No.”

That was it? That was fucking it? No explanation at all, just no.

“Why not? Shouldn’t she have a say?” Light stepped forward to be beside you once again.

“Everyone else has outside homes and responsibilities. I'm the only one who can be with her 24/7.” He explained, still looking rather bored, but at least this time he had turned his chair to face you two.

“Pervert.” You muttered. Ryuzaki had no reaction.

Light shook his head in frustration.

“How long will this take then?” Light sighed in defeat. His fairly quick acceptance thoroughly surprised you.

“Not sure. However long it takes.”

Light's hand gripped you tightly again. He was trying to regain his composure. “Alright.”

Ryuzaki, clearly seeing the matter as settled, turned away.

“Light you can't seriously be accepting this,” you accused. Logically you knew he couldn't really do much, but that didn't stop the pang of hurt from him giving in so quickly.

He looked down at you and for the first time you saw the frustration masking helplessness in his eyes. You could see he was upset. It was oddly reassuring.

“Trust me, I don't like this any more than you do, but we know you're innocent. Arguing with him isn't going to change his mind. I just hope he's able to prove it quickly.” He gently cupped your face in his hand.

Maybe you had been too harsh earlier. You knew Light loved you. You also knew how jealous he could be. As torturous as this would be for you, you knew it would be difficult for him too.

After all, who would want to see their girlfriend chained to another man.
