Work Text:
Danny doesn’t know how it happened. One moment, they were laughing and joking back and forth, and everything was going perfect. And the next, Drew’s face was just inches from his own, the tips of their noses almost touching. He can feel Drew’s breaths on his face, shallow and just as nervous as he is.
For a long time, nobody moves. They both know it can’t go any farther than this. Honestly, Danny isn’t even sure what this is. But it’s nothing new, and that much he is certain of. It’s why they spent the last five years avoiding situations like this, where they were alone together for any extended amount of time. The tour was undeniably a lot for whatever unresolved tension they had between them. It brought out feelings neither of them wanted to talk about, and so they never did. Yet, he catches himself staring at Drew’s lips now and wondering what they would feel like against his own. Many times, as much as he hates to admit it, he’d watched how tenderly Drew kissed Amanda, because he does love her. Just as Danny really does love Laura, and she is more than enough for him. She’s everything he could ever want, and there’s not a shred of untruth to that.
So why, then, does disappointment crash over him in a tidal wave when Drew scoots away, shifting uncomfortably on the couch?
After what seems like an eternity of awkward silence, Drew gives a forced chuckle. “I guess some things never change, huh?”
Danny meets his eyes, as weird as that feels after whatever the fuck just happened. “Yeah. I guess.”
They aren’t going to say it out loud. They most likely never will. Five years should have been enough to make this go away (and five years without a single moment like this with Drew was terrible and he never wants to do it again. He wants to hold on for dear life and never, ever let go, and he hates himself for how refreshed he feels after being close to him like this again).
Then, they go back to chatting animatedly, giggling over dick jokes like a couple of middle school boys. Like it never even happened. And it didn’t, as far as anyone else will ever know. It’s not like they did anything. A part of Danny longs to know what would happen if he pushed past that barrier, but he never will, because he knows Drew wouldn’t stop him, and he should. And Drew doesn’t have to say it for Danny to know the desire goes both ways. His acknowledgment, no matter how small, tells Danny that he understands this just as much (and as little) as he does.
Some things, time will never erase. Maybe this is just the way it has to be. And Danny thinks he can be okay with that, as long as Drew is still here to make those mushy feelings swell inside him. The only thing he really knows is that he never wants to go another five years without this.
