Chapter 1: A New Game

Chapter Text

He was falling.

Well, it wasn’t unusual, due to the fact he’s in the Datastream. A constant, shifting glow, that continued around him as he kept going. He was looking at the holograms since, well, there wasn’t much to look at. At least he could find something interesting on the monitor, compared to the glow of the area around. He could talk to Doc, if he was there, but he wasn’t sure if he would be in the mood.

He sighed. He missed being able to talk to the NPC’s. Even if they weren’t really alive, they made it easier. They would have thoughts and ideas, even if they were pre programmed. He missed some of them. They really brought joy, even if for a moment. All the world's he saw and how some had things that reminded him of another as if it was carrying info over (Doc said it was impossible, and merely chance). One example was the Red Winter Axe, while even under a different name, held the same memories of when he had used it.

Ren.

Oh Ren.

He saw him in a world where everyone was small and rats. He knew who he was the second he saw him. The man he knew from another world. He had the same personality, voice, and smile. It was clear. But, he didn’t remember Martyn. Then again, it wasn’t surprising, but it still stung.

He got thrown out of his thoughts when he suddenly hit the ground. He had entered a game. He looked around, trying to see where he was. It seemed like a large city, abandoned and broken. Plants grew everywhere, with the wispy and cold wind hitting him. He hadn’t changed much, unless you count the outfit, which was a simple green jacket, fingerless gloves, boots, headband, and dark green baggy cargo pants.

He started to move, trying to see if he could spot anyone. He looked at himself to see if he could find a thing to talk to Doc through. He found something in his pocket, which was a grey flip-phone. Opening it, it showed a green screen. ‘Doc?’ he typed. No response. Oh well, he was probably asleep. Martyn wasn’t quite sure what time it was for him. He did hope he was asleep, as the option that he might not be able to reach him wasn’t going to calm him down any.

As he wandered, he looked around a small shop that had been somewhat looked through. In the back, he found an axe. ‘Huh, so it's here too’ he thought. which he took along with an empty water bottle. He kept walking before the sound of crunching. He scanned the area. A small shape, one that looked like a deer had stepped out onto the street in front of him. It stared at him, watching. He walked closer to it as it just. . . .  .  .stared. Its black eyes watched him as he moved closer, never looking away.

Once he moved a bit closer, its mouth suddenly opened. Instead of it being normal, the mouth opened down part of the neck almost fully to the stomach as it let out a large howling scream. “THAT'S NOT A DEER!” he yelled, as he tried to run away as it gave chase, with more screams echoing through the empty streets. He tripped as he ran and fell back, quickly shooting back as the thing approached and got ready to try and eat him. Suddenly, a gun shot was heard as it screamed, bullet wounds bleeding as it fell over and screamed before going silent.

Martyn looked up to where the gun shot was heard, and spotted a person. They had somewhat long hair, some put in a quick ponytail. They had a red jacket, dark shirt and dark pants similar to his own. Their eyes were covered by glasses, as they held a shotgun. He knew only one person who dressed like that.

They walked over to Martyn. “You good dude?” they asked, holding out their empty hand to help Martyn up. That was his voice. “Yep, thanks” he responded, getting up with their help before looking at them. “You should be more careful, those monsters like to hide in normal forms.” they said. He snorted, “Well, I'm not from these parts, so I wouldn’t know.”. “But, thanks for saving me there. Names Martyn Inthelittlewood, he/him” He held out his hand to shake. They took it and said “Nice to meet you, names Rendog, he/him.” he greeted with a smile.
