The Plan

Summary:

Enji Todoroki was in all ways, privileged. He came from status and money. He came from a long line of famous professional heroes and had inherited a strong quirk. He was well on his way to becoming one of the greatest heroes Japan had ever seen.

And while the Himura family used their money to erase the fact that Rei had ever existed, the Todoroki family used their influence to make it so Enji had always been like this. Private doctors for school physicals, name and gender markers changed, puberty blockers and hormone therapy. If Enji was going to insist on being a man, he was not going to embarrass their family in the process.

He told himself that he was giving Rei the life he had always had.

Notes:

A character study that asks: what if Enji and Rei were a trans couple? There is some minor transphobia at the beginning, but my goal is for the story to become affirming as it goes. I fall under the trans* umbrella so I tried to treat their stories sensitively.
I also tried to stick as close to canon as I could.

Chapter Text

He hated everything about the situation.

As a hero, he told himself that he was saving her. Doing her a favor. Rescuing her from a family that did not understand her. From a family that was ashamed of her and hid her away. A family that pretended that she didn’t exist. He told himself that he was doing right by her. He was the best scenario for her.

As though he was not going to use her the second he got his hands on her.

He swallowed down the angry heat that built up in his chest while he spoke to her father. “It’s truly an honor to be approached by the man many believe will be the next number-one hero in Japan.” He started before glancing around the garden nervously, as though expecting someone to be listening in to their private conversation. “I never expected such an offer.” He admitted. “While we are truly honored, sir. Are-are you sure you want him?” The older man had asked, dropping his voice down low to a whisper. “The Himura family has other children. A top-tier hero needs a fitting bride.” He argued.

Rei sat quietly beside her father, her hands folded in her lap and her eyes averted. She did not dare to glance up at Enji, or even acknowledge that a conversation was happening around her. Even without the strong ice controlling quirk of the Himura family, her demeanor seemed icy. Enji could not help but see an alternate version of himself in her. Had his parents not had the understanding or the money, would he have grown up like her? Cold, distant, a black mark on an otherwise affluent family.

There was only so much that Enji could say. He had been in enough diplomatic meetings to know that he had to choose his words carefully to get what he wanted. “I assure you, the Todoroki family has great plans for your son.” Rei flinched at Enji’s words. He was sure that her father had not noticed, but his years of extensive hero training had conditioned him to pick up on the smallest changes in a person and his surroundings. He silently promised to apologize to her later.

Money was exchanged, contracts were signed. On paper it looked as though Enji Todoroki had purchased Rei Himura for some sort of at home servant and the Himura family eagerly had signed off on any non-disclosure agreement to never speak of Rei or even acknowledge that Rei had been a part of their family.

The Todoroki family’s lawyers would re-draft the contract to look like an arranged marriage later. It was obvious to his family’s lawyers that this was a Quirk marriagen. Something that had been taboo for generations. But for the sake of Enji’s pride, or perhaps their own embarrassment, they had not asked why Enji had needed to enter such an agreement.

Enji Todoroki had known who he was and what he wanted from a young age. He was going to be the number one hero in the world. He was going to save more people than anyone else ever had. And he was going to do it as a man. As he got older, though, he realized the short-comings in his quirk as the gap between himself and All Might continued to grow.

He knew better than to not have a back up plan. Which was where Rei came in. He had been searching for someone with a strong ice quirk that would be willing to work with him. Someone that would understand his needs. While he had never considered himself a gay man, he was beginning to worry he would have to make that his plan C when he stumbled upon some rumors about the effeminate disgraced son of the Himura family.

While the Himura family had once been prestigious, they had fallen on hard times and were struggling by the time Enji found them. They craved their once high status and were willing to do most anything for a share of the wealth they had grown accustomed to. Which was why Rei’s father signed over his child quickly, even though Enji was vague as to what he would be using her for.

Enji and Rei walked slowly off the Himura property. Rei carrying a small suitcase, her head bowed low. It was only when Enji loaded her suitcase into the trunk of his car and took a seat next to her in the back that he began to wonder what kind of person she was. She seemed strong, but it came with a guardedness that Enji knew too well. On their way back to his house, he could not help but shake with excitement as he considered that he was now going to be paired with perhaps the only person that had ever understood how he felt.

When they arrived at the estate, he took her suitcase for her, leading her into his home. Their home. The house was huge, really too big for just the two of them. This had been by design, as they would not be the only two inhabiting it for long.

The idea of producing an heir had always caused mixed feelings to stir within Enji. He knew objectively that it was what had to be done for him to reach his goal. If he could not beat All Might than I his bloodline would have to. That was simply a fact, and he knew better than to get his feelings involved.

But when it came to the details. The idea of producing, carrying, birthing an heir. Was that something he wanted? Did his want for an heir outweigh his disgust of pregnancy? It would have to, he reminded himself as he showed Rei around her new home.

He lead her into their bedroom. He sat her suitcase down on the floor right outside of the large closet. “Here is our room.” Enji explained simply, looking over to her. “Feel free to unpack and get settled.”

Rei seemed to curl inwards upon herself as he spoke. While she was so confused as to what his intentions were with her initially, she was starting to pick up on what she thought they were supposed to be doing. “Are you some kind of faggot or something?” Enji froze as though she had used her power on him. Her voice was soft, but carried an anger that surprised him. She had been so quiet. Other than making an off-handed comment about flowers that she liked, she had not said one word to him since they met that morning. Enji was shocked that the first words she said to him once they were alone carried so much malice.

“Ah. No. It’s not like that.” He answered quickly. But wasn’t it like that? He wondered. She was not wrong. Was she? If he was a man, and he wanted her to — but she was a woman, so he wasn’t — but she had a— “It’s complicated.” He finally said, trying to silence the racing thoughts in his head as he began to overthink his life plan.

“How so?” She asked. Enji picked up on a slight quiver in her voice. “If you know about me then you know what I am. Why else would you take me in as your concubine?”

Enji studied her for a moment. He had never told anyone before. His parents knew, but they didn’t talk about it. His lawyers had handled his entry into UA so he didn’t have to explain himself. How as he supposed to do this? “Rei. You’re my wife.”

A frown fell on her delicate features. He thought she was so beautiful. Enji wondered how could anyone ever see her as anything other than a woman. “Are mocking me? I can’t be your wife.” She snapped defensively.

“You are my wife just as much as I am your husband.” He tried to explain, hoping she would understand his meaning.

It was clear to Enji that she did not follow him, as her frown only deepened. “What are you talking about?”

Enji let out a sigh. He reached out to touch her, and she took a step backwards, out of his reach. Not that he could blame her. From her perspective all he had done was speak in riddles since they had gotten home. Slowly, as though trying to soothe an animal, he took another step towards her. Her eyes widened in fear as her back hit the wall of the bedroom. He rested one of his hot hands against her cold cheek. “I’m sorry.” Enji said softly. “For calling you his son.” Her brown eyes studied him carefully although he spoke earnestly. “I just said what I had to so that he would let you leave with me. The truth is…” He let out a deep breath, the heat from his lips warming her face. “I’m like you. I’m not what people think I am.” He frowned at his own words. “Or, I am, but, it’s complicated.”

She stared up at him for a moment, eyes wide with surprise. Rei was unsure if she believed him. She had never met anyone like her before. She had been hidden away by her parents and made to feel like a freak. Were there others out there like her? Had one found her? Could she really allow herself to get her hopes up that she had been that lucky? Hi “I…” She shook her head. Tears welling up in her dark eyes. It was too good to be true. “I don’t believe you.” She admitted. Even if there were others like her out there, she could not believe that Enji Todoroki was one of them. He was took strong, too important, too wealthy, too everything she wasn’t.

He pulled back from her slightly, not surprised that she did not believe him. Why would she? His family had done such a good job making sure no one would ever know. He knew there was only one way to convince her. He took a few steps back, giving her space as he stripped off his suit jacket and hung it back up carefully in the closet.

She watched him curiously, studying his movements carefully as if she would be able to sort out if he was telling the truth by the way his body moved alone. With dexterous fingers he undid his tie, hanging it up as well. His face flushed hot as he noticed her staring at his hands with anticipation, waiting for him to continue.

He was not used to being under so much scrutiny, but it was rare for him to be exposed in front of others. As nervous as he was, he rationalized that if he wanted her to… help him make an heir, he would have to get comfortable with her. She was not a stranger. Rei was his wife.

He carefully unbuttoned his starched white dress shirt, tossing it into the clothes hamper. Enji let out a deep breath, trying not to show any nerves as he watched her brown eyes study him. He left his spot over by the closet and re-approached where she had stayed over by the wall. Blue eyes locked in on brown as they stared at each other for a moment. She must have picked up on how nervous he was, because for a brief moment he saw the strength in her eyes return as he hesitated. “Well?” She asked, as though trying to call his bluff.

Fueled by her dare, he pulled his undershirt off over his head in one quick motion, tossing it to the side and allowing it to land on the floor. Through his hormone treatments, surgeries, and strict work out regimen, at 21 he was finally proud of his body. He had to admit that he finally looked the way he had always felt.

Just a quick glance at the professional hero, and they might have been difficult to miss underneath the strong muscles on his chest. Maybe to the untrained eye, the two scars running laterally underneath his pecs might look like battle scars from a villain. Rei’s eyes widened in surprise as she recognized the scars immediately. She felt guilty for the taunting she had done just moments earlier as tears began to well up in her eyes. With a shaky hand she reached forward, running her fingertips along one of the scars.

Enji took in a sharp breath as he was touched by her cold fingers. His heart pounde hard in his chest as she ran an icy thumb along the length of the scars. Before he had the thought to stop himself, he let out a soft moan. The cold hand feeling surprisingly good on his strong chest.

Rei quickly jerked her hand away at the sound. “I-I’m sorry.” She said softly. Although she was not sure if she was apologizing for her words earlier, or for touching him. Perhaps both.

He let out a breathy chuckle as she bashfully apologized to him. He noticed her cheeks turning pink and Enji could not help but find the look adorable on such a stoic woman. “It’s okay.” He reassured her quickly.

Rei leaned back against the wall, staring up at the man so close to her. “What… What do you want from me?" She asked bluntly. While she was relieved that he did not seem to think of her as some fetish, Rei now had even more questions.

It was Enji’s turn to blush at her question. “I…” He swallowed. “I need an heir.” Enji admitted. “To carry on my legacy. I need… a mother for my child.”

Rei swallowed. So this had been a traditional quirk marriage. Their marriage suddenly made too much sense. Their relationship suddenly felt way too real. He had wanted her quirk. Her blood. Her.

Rei’si blush deepened impossibly. He had wanted her. He had sought out her for such a deep and vulnerable request. He thought of her as mother. Never before in her life had Rei felt so seen. All she had ever wanted was to be like the women in her family. Be like her sisters, her female cousins, like her own mother.

This man that she did not even know had seen that in her. Had pulled her out of the home she was not allowed to be herself in.

This man wanted to make her a mother.

“I know it’s a big ask.” Enji continued, interpreting her quietness as hesitation. “I can help you. Hormones, surgery, whatever you want. I have the money and the connections. I can give it to you. I just need—”

“I’ll do it.” Rei said eagerly, not waiting for him to finish.

“A-Are you sure?” Enji asked carefully.

Rei looked up at him, her eyes were still watery, but the look on her face screamed determination. “I’m sure. I… I think this is something we both need.” She admitted.

Enji let out a sigh of relief, giving her a smile. “Thank you.” He leaned closer to her. “Can I?” He asked, breathing hot air into her mouth.

She shuddered against how close he was. How she could feel the heat rolling off of him. Rei swallowed, her throat suddenly dry. “Y-yes.”

Enji bridged the gap between them, leaning down to kiss her deeply. She had never been kissed before. No one had ever touched her with such passion. Unsure of what to do, she reached out, grabbing ahold of the only thing that could ground her — the surgical scars on his chest.

He moaned into her mouth as he felt her cold hands on the sensitive scars once more. While he had dated a couple of girls during his time at U.A., it had mostly been for appearances, not because he had any real feelings for any of them. He had shared a few kisses with women here or there, but for fear of his secret being discovered, no one had ever touched him where Rei had. Her thumbs trailed up from the scars, running over his nipples. While the feeling in them had diminished since his top surgery a few years prior, he was surprised to learn that they could still feel and react to the coldness of her hands. He moaned once again into her mouth, pressing their bodies closer together and pushing her against the wall.

Rei gasped into his mouth as she found her back against the wall. She felt herself growing hot from being surrounded by his strong body. The heat of her first kiss left her dizzy when they finally pulled apart, her dark eyes now almost black with a lust she had never felt before. His mouth trailed down her neck, leaving hot kisses across her throat. She let out a moan as she felt herself becoming hard under her skirt. Normally she would be mortified, afraid for her safety at the idea of him finding out about what was underneath her clothes.

But knowing that Enji knew and wanted it only made her more hard as she threw her head back against the wall, arching into his hot mouth as he nipped and sucked at her collar bone. Her hands found their way into his hair, tugging at the red locks as he sucked on her throat. She moaned against him, bucking her hips instinctively.

His hot hands came down to rest on her narrow hips, not to hold her still, but to pull her closer. Enji bit down into her collar bone as he felt her hardness press against his leg. This was really happening. Was it too soon? He buried down his concerns and reminded himself that he was running out of time if he ever dreamed of becoming the Number One hero. “Come on.” He breathed, pulling away from her. She looked up at him in surprise for a moment, worried that she had done something wrong. “Let’s do this right.” He offered softly, his words more of a breath. His hands still tight on her waist, he pulled her off the wall, swinging her around as though she weighed nothing and dropping her down onto the bed.

She laid back against his pillows. Their pillows. She stared up at him as her heart pounded in her chest. “Now?” She asked, her voice catching in her throat with anticipation as he climbed up her body.

“The sooner the better.” Enji breathed out, running one of his hot hands up her skirt.
