Work Text:

Bugs crawling all around in a foul-smelling room. What happened here?

Sunny cautiously stepped over rancid trash strewn across the floor and tried to find the light switch... but to no avail. Scuttling and crawling warts of roaches ate away at what looked (and smelt) like rotten and putrid food left on the dinner table. This was beyond disgusting. Basil had always been particular about cleanliness... Polly too.

Polly was dismissed as Basil's caretaker recently. He recalled how ...off Basil looked when seeing Polly off. Locking himself in the house and refusing to talk to anyone after.

As his eyes slowly adjusted to the darkness, he made his way to Basil's room and knocked on his door. A stench even worse than the rotting garbage in the living room intruded Sunny's nostrils. He covered his nose, eyes watering and coughing uncontrollably. Something deep in his gut told him to run. However, Sunny was done running away. He was through with running from things he was scared of. So, with his heart pounding, he gathered himself and gingerly opened the door.

And there it was, for the first time in weeks, Sunny saw Something once again.

But it wasn't his Something.

It was Basil's.

He looked further and could barely make out a silhouette in the distance... As the moonlight shined through the window, Sunny quickly identified Basil's hair, followed by Basil's torso and then Basil's arms. He was just... standing there. Unnaturally still and unmoving. Lifeless. Dead. He was dead. Basil was dead. Decomposing right before Sunny's eyes.

It becoming more and more apparent that the putrid stench originated from Basil's corpse, Sunny took a step back. His eyes widening as he felt saliva pool in his mouth. He suppressed the urge to vomit. Something about how Basil looked made Sunny feel like he himself was dying. Something swollen and black hung by Basil's mouth and brown liquid was dripping down his wrung neck. Maggots were squirming about in his empty eye-socket. This... isn’t real. This is just a nightmare right? This isn't real.

Sunny could feel Omori's expectant eyes watching him from behind. He forced bile back down his throat. A stuck scream wriggled out of his lungs and into his mouth, but no noise came out. A deafening ring overpowered all of his senses. He felt sick. His legs were going to give out at any moment.

Fresh air. Sunny needed to get some fresh air.

He stumbled out of the house and threw up. His hair was in his eyes. He was as sweaty as a pig. His head hurt so badly. He couldn't even think straight. His knees gave out from under him as he fell onto the ground. He could only cry and cry and cry out. Not that anyone could hear his pained screams. He cried out until he nearly tore his throat open and passed out from exhaustion.

So much was happening and yet, to the rest of the residents of Faraway, it was just another quiet evening.

Goodnight, Sunny.
