Work Text:

“Happy birthday, dear Koutarou, happy birthday to you!”

Akaashi sang, his voice in a low tone, aware that they were alone in a dark room.

The summer was almost gone, leaving space for the autumn and its golden hues to shine and foretell the winter that was to come.

Bokuto was revolving around the sun one more year. Another autumn for him. Akaashi couldn’t be happier. He looked at Bokuto as if he was the sun himself and celebrating Bokuto Koutarou’s life was, for Akaashi Keiji, better than celebrating his own.

It’s not that Akaashi didn’t like his birthday, but Bokuto loved his. He did countdowns, he told people, he’d tell strangers on the street and everything, it was his national holiday. Bokuto’s day. Akaashi went along and started liking this celebration more than his birthday.

So, when September 19th night hit, Akaashi showed up at Bokuto’s with a muffin and a small candle. He wanted to be the first to tell him happy birthday when midnight struck and all those great wishes people always tell each other on their birthdays. He wanted to be the number one. Bokuto’s number one.

That was Akaashi’s wish, even if it wasn’t his birthday. A guy can dream.

“Make a wish, Bokuto-san.” Akaashi whispered and looked at Bokuto, whose face seemed to shine brighter than the fire of the small golden candle. He felt like his heart could stop just by looking at him. How can one be so unashamedly beautiful like that? Somewhere deep in his body, Akaashi felt his breath stop for a while.

“You know, Akaashi, you’re all I could ever wish for.” Bokuto whispered back, and set his golden gaze at Akaashi’s blue eyes.

Keiji blushes. His eyes glistening from the light of the small candle Bokuto forgot to blow, but something was burning stronger inside of him. All he could do was look down, but he was interrupted by Bokuto’s hand lifting his chin up. Akaashi could melt from the touch of Bokuto’s strong hands on his face.

“C’mon, ‘Kaashi! You’re too old to be so shy!” Bokuto joked. “You should… stay the night, would ya?” Koutarou said, uncertain of his own words, afraid Keiji would say no. So he looked down and quickly blew the candle he forgot about because he was too busy looking at the man he was madly and desperately in love with.

Firelight gone, the only light illuminating them was the moon and Akaashi, oh my, Akaashi seemed ethereal. Looking down and blushing, running around his own head. His Akaashi.

Keiji looked up again, beautiful and wide eyed. He looked at Bokuto back and tried to say some words but they all seemed to flee from him. Great.

“I…” He tried to say. He wanted to say yes but his mind started rambling so much his voice got little. All this love that was crushing him. Yes, he knew Bokuto felt something but didn’t expect this confession in a birthday wish. He didn’t expect him to be Bokuto’s wish.

But Bokuto Koutarou was patient with Akaashi Keiji. He knew how Akaashi’s mind could put some traps in simple things that would make Akaashi feel like he was being hunted down by wolves. But Koutarou was there. He would wait. He would reassure anything that needed to be reassured. He wouldn’t go away.

Akaashi didn’t know what to say.

“You’re too old to be so shy.”

So he did what he’d been wanting to do for years.

He kissed Bokuto. And Bokuto kissed Akaashi back.

Akaashi’s soft lips against Bokuto’s tasted better than any birthday dessert.

Bokuto’s hands went down to Akaashi’s waist whilst Akaashi’s hands were all over Bokuto. On the back of his neck, then on his shoulders. He’d waited so long for this so he could savour it all.

They broke the kiss apart and stared at each other, wide-eyed and smiling.

“Yes, Bokuto-san, I will stay the night.” Akaashi said in between huffs of air.

“Please. Stay the night. Stay forever. As long as you want. Please.” Bokuto said and kissed Akaashi again. His Akaashi. If Bokuto could make one more wish, he’d wish that time could stop at that very moment. He didn’t need anything. He could die happy (or live longer to kiss Akaashi whenever he wanted. That was a better option.).

“Happy birthday, Bokuto-san.”

Akaashi smiled at him. Bokuto smiled back.

“My wish came true.”

“It sure did. I love you, Bokuto Koutarou.”

“I love you too, Akaashi Keiji.”
