Work Text:
The wind rustled overhead, carrying hushed secrets and murmurs with it. White moths fluttered from the sky, kissing everything in their wake. A layer of frost blanketed almost everything that could be seen for miles. The snow crunched under X’s feet, leaving a trail behind him that would immediately be hidden by the falling flakes, the evidence of him ever crossing this path being erased.
The bare trees stood tall and proud, piercing the dull sky. Snow fell from the branch which a bird used as a support to launch itself into the sky. It didn’t spare a single glance to what gave him the opportunity to soar up high, to open his wings. The branch was just a tool to get its wish. Its wish to touch unbelievable heights.
His cape flew behind him and so did his hair as he fought against the wind to get to his destiny. He had fought against so many, the feeble puff of air was nothing. It blew and blew but couldn’t knock X off his feet. No one could now.
He fell down once, all alone, with no one to stretch out an arm to pick him up. He was left to cry and to weep for what could’ve been and what had happened. He was left, betrayed and heartbroken.
“Jupiter.. I think you are my soulmate..”
“Took you long enough,” he muttered, a weary expression possessing his face, “We had already figured it out while you and Uranus were frolicking in literal hell!” By we, he meant Saturn and himself. Saturn was soulbound to Uranus but he refused to work with him, instead he chose Jupiter.
“We didn’t know who our soulmates were!” X cried out.
“Did you even try finding us?” He asked, simply crossing his arms, “Did you?” He echoed.
“We tried to but it wasn’t easy! I just-” he trailed off, getting lost in his own thoughts. He tried! He really did! Once he couldn’t find an answer, he decided to accompany Uranus on his expedition, not wanting to be left alone.
“It’s too late! My soulmate is Jupiter!” Saturn interrupted. A weird noise bubbled from Uranus’ throat. They were supposed to be soulmates.. and they are.. Both of their lives are tied together.
“Yeah we don’t need you..” Jupiter declared, intertwining his fingers with Saturn. It should’ve been X! “Byee!” He waved as he turned around and disappeared into the forest, not once looking over his shoulder.
X slowly turned towards Uranus, mustering a smile, “You’ll stay with me.. right?” He asked with a hint of desperation.
Uranus looked down at the ground with a guilty expression and bit at his lower lip, “I’m sorry X..” he took one step backwards and then another before he was running in the opposite direction.
“URANUS!” X called out, chasing after him, one hand reaching out as if he could catch Uranus between his cold fingertips. He was looking up and didn’t notice the twig on which he tripped, falling on his fours. He looked down, unable to look up at the nothingness that surrounded him. He pounded the ground with a fist and let the tears cascade down his cheeks and wet the lush grass.
He got up without anyone’s help. He fell down in heartbreak and got up with determination. He had to win. He had to win so that Jupiter would learn to regret walking out his life. He ignored the rumours that revolved around him, the names he was called, the glances he was given.
Out of all the mutual feelings between him and Jupiter, trust wasn’t one of them. Trust was just like complete silence, both are hard to earn but take little to no effort to break. Jupiter had broken his trust with the same amount of effort he took to break the spell of silence cast over the woods with his footsteps.
The trees broke apart, revealing a clearing where there was someone else standing, a solemn look on his face. His own soulmate. They were the last two survivors in this death match but alas only one could win. There was only one crown made for only one head.
“Hey Jupiter,” He giggled maniacally, arming his bow with an arrow and raising it higher. Jupiter’s eyes widened at the state of X. His once mesmerising blue hair was disheveled and tangled, messy just like its owner. His eyes were bloodshot, dark circles under them. Dried blood stained his cheek, definitely not his own. The blood of all those who wronged him.
“Hello X..” He replied in a weak voice. For a frozen moment, utter silence fell between them as they both stared. Eye contact was something they had not made ever since Jupiter left him to fend for himself.
“I honestly didn’t think it would come down to us two,” he chuckled. No one expected that the most toxic relationship, the most broken people would be the last ones standing.
“I honestly didn’t have a lot of fate in us,” X whispered in such a low voice, as if speaking any louder would disrupt the peace that the souls buried under the soil they stand on rested in.
“X..” he uttered his name, “I think you deserve this more..” From his satchel, he took out a red bar. Dynamite.
X fell back in fear and raised his bow, “What.. what do you mean?” He asked cautiously. “I don’t know what this means!”
“You do..” Jupiter gave a crooked and sad smile, “In the same way.. Tilly death do us part..”
“Jupiter what are you doing?” X asked fully knowing what he was doing, panic rising in his voice. Sure he wanted to win but where was the fighting? The drama? Why was Jupiter just handing over the victory to him?
Jupiter took out a lighter from his satchel and lit the fuse of the dynamite, throwing the lighter away and raising the dynamite high over his head. He looked at X one last time, “Tilly death do us part!”
“JUPITER!” He cried, dropping the bow and running towards him. But he wasn’t fast enough. Jupiter disappeared behind a blinding cloud of orange and red. The warm colours being all he saw before his vision faded into black.
“Congratulations on your victory.” A voice echoed in his mind. “As a reward, I shall grant you your deepest desire.”
“I want to see them again. I want to see Jupiter again.”
