Work Text:

(3rd person)

The team walked through the now abandoned building as they tried to scope out where the hostages could possibly be. They had found multiple booby traps already, so they warned eachother to be careful. The problem? It was pitch black. Nobody could've known that the mission would take this long, and all Monstera had was her dingy pink flashlight from when she was 15.

"Let's split up." Monstera spoke, abruptly breaking the silence. Roadkill and Labyrinth looked at her like she was a madwoman, then looked at each other, then looked back at her.

"There's NO WAY-" Roadkill emphasized, "-that we're doing that." Labyrinth nodded her head in agreement, but they both knew Monstera would try to argue, so...

"Fine. I'll go look for one hostage, you and Alek go for the other. We all know the enemies split them up to make it harder on us." Labyrinth spoke with a sigh, her voice low and quiet. For once, Monstera actually agreed.

Now they were off, Monstera and Roadkill, walking down an extremely dark corridor with nothing but hope that they didn't die. That was, until, Monstera heard a click under her boot. She paused in her movement, looking over at Roadkill with nothing but genuine fear in her gaze.

"Aleks..."

She spoke softly, her voice shaking. She had just stepped on a landmine, and if she lifted any weight off of it, it would be over for both of them. Thank the Gods for Aleks quick thinking skills, and he was able to find a board to slide under her foot. But now they had a new problem. He was stuck holding all his weight onto a wooden board that felt like it would break any second, and it didn't help that Roadkill was definitely not a small man.

Eventually they figured it out (because I'm too lazy and it's 10:30 pm) and they were off again.

Labyrinth was searching every room, every nook and crannie for this hostage, supposedly a 17 year old girl. She tried to extend her hearing to see if she could make out screams. And she did.

But it wasn't the scream of the person she was hoping.

It was Monstera. Labyrinth perked up at the sound, her feet carrying her as fast as she could go before her brain even had time to process it. When she got there, it wasn't a sight anyone would want to see.

Monstera was on her knees in front of an enemy, Roadkill held back by at least 3 men. Monstera was sat there, blood already waterfalling out of her shoulder from a bullet she had taken. That must've been the scream Labyrinth heard. Then she saw it. The gun pressed to Monstera's forehead like she owed the man something.

"I don't want to die..." Monstera pleaded, her voice weak. "Please don't let me-"

Mazie swore, the second she looked over at Aleks, a gunshot rang through the air. Then a body collapsing onto the floor as she looked back over. Connie's forehead now pouring blood and brain matter, the crimson colour painting the floor like death itself was creating a masterpiece.

Mazie instinctively pulled out her gun, the enemies not yet realizing she was there. As the man who had just murdered her best friend's sister walked over to Aleksandr, she pulled out her desert eagle, aiming it, and firing it right through his head. She did the same for the three men holding Aleks back, and he fell to the floor.

He was sobbing, hands and body shaking like Mazie had never seen before. Then she realized she was too. Her tears fell from her face to the floor and before she knew it she was on her knees next to Aleksandr, hugging him and crying into his shoulder as his tears fell out of his mask and down to his neck. He was still staring at Connie's lifeless body. He got up, catching Mazie off guard as he walked over to her.

"She-She's still w-warm..." Aleks mumbled, his voice weak and shaking like a brittle leaf in the fall breeze. He picked up Connie's body, cradling her in his arms, close to his chest. He had one hand on the back of her head and one arm around her body as he cried into her hair. That was his best friend. For lifers since kindergarten, maybe even before that. And she was gone just like that. Her radio still crackled, a few panicked voices coming through before the rest of the team can in, taking in the sight before them.

(Aftermath)

It had been a few days now. Aleks hadn't come out of his room one time. Marilyn was the same, sobbing being the only thing you could hear from both rooms. Mazie was still shellshocked, getting used to not having someone to boss her around constantly. In fact, the whole base felt weird. Nobody yelling, nobody making snarky or bratty remarks. It felt... Quiet. In a bad way.

Kyrin was still blissfully unaware, loving the attention she was getting from her mom for having a torn ACL. That was, until, the doorbell rang. He mom got up to get it, and as soon as she heard crying she got up. Kyrin grabbed her crutches, hopping over to the front door. Then her heart sank. König. The Colonel. Holding a box, and a smaller box that looked like it held some kind of jewelry. König waved her over, handing her the smaller box.

"Your sister told me to give these to you." König's voice held something Kyrin couldn't quite put her finger on. Regret? Sadness? Anger?

She nearly fell off her crutches as soon as she opened it. Her sister's dogtags. The bigger box must've been her ashes.

"I'm so sorry for your loss."

His words rang through Kyrin's head, even as she hobbled back over to the couch. Tears spilled from her eyes uncontrollably as she read the dogtags over and over again, her mother sitting beside her and staring at the photo of Connie on the box blankly.

*Connie 'Monstera' Konrad*

Her sister was dead. And she wasn't even there to say goodbye. In fact, her and Connie had gotten into a fight before she went on medical leave. Meaning she died thinking Kyrin didn't like her.

"Dammit..." Kyrin's voice ring out over the sounds of her sobbing, and her mother stifling a waterfall.
