She stood in front of the Talon headquarters entrance, soon to become an exit had she decided to step through the door.
There was nobody stopping here, nobody to apprehend or kill her if it came down to it. That was, if anyone even cared to begin with. She stared hard at the door almost hoping someone would question her.
But nobody came. She frowned, feeling what seemed to be frustration. But it was hard to tell. After all, she couldn’t feel anything. That's what everyone assumed at least.
“They know nothing about me.”
Thinking back to when she had repeated those words to Ana out of sudden impulse. It was true then, how could they ever know anything about her? In the eyes of Overwatch, she was a woman who murdered her husband in cold-blood and joined Talon. She was apathetic and ruthless, finding joy in hurting others. They were not wrong, but they were not correct either. She was not always like this, she knows.
Yet, even when she said those words, those unconvinced, hateful eyes stared back at her as if she were crazy.
How could she ever be? She loved her husband, she remembers this. The nights when he came home late as she stayed up waiting for him. The day of their wedding gave her the warmest feeling in her chest. When he cried in her arms after Talon had used her as a hostage the first time, before everything else.
She felt her chest tighten, she could remember it all. Yet the feelings were faint to none. It almost felt like a throbbing pain. Pain, it’s what she remembered first waking up in Moira’s laboratory. In Talon's eyes, she is an experiment that turned out successful like Reaper. A creation used to benefit Talon and help give them the advantage.
Talon took away anything she had and gave her a new feeling that she hadn’t felt in so long.
Adrenaline, the rush of pride flowed through her veins when she killed Mondatta. As she watched Tracer’s face turn into one of distraught and betrayal. But despite what they had given her that had also taken away so much. Including her humanity, she knows this.
She remembers the look on Moira’s face after what seemed to be a simple comment while on a mission. And the words that came after.
“Is that an emotion I detect, Lacroix?”
That was the first time she felt a new feeling, fear.
Fear of change, and the fear of something different.
She snapped back to the door staring right at her, that feeling of fear suddenly sunk right into her. If she left, what would happen? She couldn’t just run right back to Talon, and she doubts Overwatch would ever accept her. She almost wants to believe they would, but the chance is very slim.
She hovered her hand over the ID Verification, and felt something new, hesitation.
She hesitated to leave what she's known behind all over again, hesitated to try and get better, hesitated to try and be human again. She could never be Amelie Lacroix ever again after all, and she wondered if continuing to be Widowmaker would hurt her.
Pushing her hand onto the ID Verification, it lit up and opened the doors. Revealing the night sky shining with all the stars in the world.
Perhaps for now, she’ll just visit Gerard again.
