Work Text:
'Please,' Inumaki signed, begging. He had even used his best puppy eyes. They were guaranteed to work on everyone, melting the harsh exteriors of their hearts. Unfortunately for him, he had forgotten that Maki was no human. She had no heart. She was a cruel, evil beast from the depths of the underworld that feasted on his misery.
"I already said no." She said with a rough finality to her words as she turned on her heel and walked back to the training field. Luckily Inumaki Toge was nothing if not persistent, so he ran infront of her and started walking backwards so she could see his signs.
'Please, just for the couples discount.'
"No." Maki stared at him eyed narrowed. "I wouldn't be caught dead even pretending to date you."
The words struck through him, like an arrow piercing his heart. Inumaki, dramatically, dropped to his knees clutching his chest as if Maki had physically wounded him. Which, technically, she had wound him. Emotionally.
Now how was he supposed to get free food. He fell onto his back, going starfish position in the middle of the training field. He stared at the sky, the happy bright blue of it making him even more upset. Why does the sky get to be happy and he doesn't?
While he continued to perform his theatrics, much to Maki's amusement, a small group gathered around them. They were probably all wondering why Inumaki had been looking at the sun like it had personally offended him.
"What's up with Inumaki-senpai?," Yuji asked with a nod in Inumaki's direction. He had a half full bottle of water clutched in his hand. They were all probably using Inumaki as an excuse to have a break from training and he couldn't even blame them. As he had said, the sky was cloudless and the sun was out. Even though it wasn't overbearingly hot, it was still uncomfortable to train in this weather, with the sun striking down directly on them.
Which is exactly why Toge had wanted to get free Boba. It would be so extremely delicious and refreshing in these weather conditions. He could already imagine the diffrent flavours singing to him like birdsong. He let out a dreamy sigh.Alas, this was all a dream because Maki crushed his plans.
There was a really fancy Boba store near the town at the foot of the mountain. They had the biggest range of flavours he had ever seen and from the reviews, they were all amazing. The only problem was their prices, no way was he about to drop that much money on a single drink. Just because he was a sorcerer that got a regular paycheck and a student with free housing and food didn't mean he had money to use completely freely. He has other priorities. He still had to pay for his cough syrup and his monthly subscriptions and for the merch he ordered recently and his favourite company was releasing a new video game soon that he just had to have.
Priorities.
That was where Maki came in (supposed to come in, now she was just a traitor). The store was having a two-for-one deal for the next week for any couples that walked through their doors. The perfect opportunity for him to finally taste perfection.
Now Toge's plan had ripped to shreds infront of his eyes. In his mind, Maki was an evil fly rubbing her hand together while feasting on his corpse.
It wasn't Toge's fault that he was painfully single and the object of his affections was actively being haunted by his dead childhood fiancé. Plus, he was a jujutsu sorcerer, they could die at any second. He didn't have time for romance.
He could practically hear the universe mocking him, no bitches?
He was going to die alone and bobaless. A cruel fate, really.
"Drama queen over here wants Boba," Maki said, gesturing to him with her polearm. "But he's too broke to pay for it."
He huffed. He's not broke, he just has priorities.
"I can buy you some if you want, Inumaki-kun?" Said a voice from the heavens. Toge sat up straight and turned towards his savior.
There stood Okkotsu Yuuta, with the rest of the students, in all his glory. Special grade Okkotsu Yuuta. The only thing deeper than their cursed energy reserves were their wallets.
Inumaki shot up and literally tackled Yuuta in a hug, arms wrapping tightly around his neck. A very necessary show of appreciation for his very kind offer. Not just because he wanted to hug his crush. Nope. No sir. ( he did, sue him)
Everyone else laughs around them as Yuuta thankfully catches his balance before they both go toppling onto the pitch, sturdy arms wrapping around Inumaki's torso.
Slowly, they all dispersed and went back to their respective training leaving just Inumaki, Yuuta and one smirking Maki Zenin. Too quickly, in his opinion,Inumaki releases Yuuta from his embrace.
'Thank you,' he signs."Yuuta."
Yuuta's eyes widen slightly from the sound of his name, the tips of his ears flushing red.
Yuuta starts laughing now, sporting the biggest smile he had ever seen and he was looking at Inumaki with so much adoration in his eyes. Inumaki found himself fighting the urge to look away out of fear that the sight may blind him.
"Of course, anything for you Inumaki-kun. We'll go after training, yeah?" Yuuta asked.
"Shake!" Toge beamed with a thumbs up. Yuuta smiled back at him before returning to his spar with Megumi.
He felt Maki's smirk from behind before he saw it.
"Guess you'll be getting that couple's discount after all, drama queen."
Toge felt his eyebrow twitch. Just because he was going on a not Boba date thanks to her does not mean that he had forgotten her betrayal. She was going down.
For the first time in a long time (see:forever), Inumaki Toge had won exactly half of his spars with Maki Zenin. Which, by the way, was extremely impressive if he did say so himself, which he did.
And if he scored a free drink and a boyfriend all in the same day? Well, you could say he was on a winning streak.
