Work Text:
Some information before you read.
Hiccup and Tuffnut are roommates
Snotlout and Fishlegs are roommates
Astrid and Ruffnut are roommates
Hiccup is Harold
I kept Astrid's name because it's fine.
Tuffnut is Laverne
Ruffnut is Eugene
Fishlegs is Justin
Snotlout is Gary
Toothless is a black cat
Stormfly is a bird (maybe a blue parrot, not really sure which kind suits her)
Meatlug is a pug
Hookfang is a Doberman
Barf and Belch are twin bearded dragons
They go to The Edge University in a small town called Berk, they've all known each other since childhood, and have somehow all managed to get into the same college. The backstory behind Hiccup's leg is a shark attack instead of the Red Death, and he wears a modern-day prosthetic. I was going to add in chicken but wasn't sure if I should, I'm not sure if there are colleges that allow pets but I wanted to add in the dragons somehow, and this is the best way I can think of to do it. I also do not have experience with college myself as I just finished high school, so some stuff in this might not be accurate. This was written as fast as possible so not really my best work but I needed to write it before my vision left. I think that's all, enjoy reading!
Harolds pov.
Harold's classes went by agonizingly slowly this morning. Sometimes, he wished he had picked the later option instead of 7:30 a.m., but he was done with his classes for the day by 9:30 a.m. and decided to go to their local coffee shop on campus. He knew Astrid and Justin also had early classes, and they should be out by now, so he decided to text them to see if they wanted to meet up there with him.
Turns out they were both going there anyway, they all got there at the same time and put their coffee orders in then found a place to sit down.
It was raining today so everyone decided to dress comfortably, Harold is wearing a red hoodie and jeans with a black sneaker (just one because well, his prosthetic) Astrid is wearing black leggings and a blue zip hoodie with a white tank top underneath and white sneakers, and Justin is wearing jeans and a dark orange hoodie with white sneakers.
“So, how was your guys' morning?” Harold tried to make small conversation, “Slow today, felt like the professor went on for hours,” Astrid said rubbing her forehead. Usually, she had no complaints, she's a morning person and loves the major she picked, but today is gloomy, it's been raining all morning making her want to crawl back into bed.
“Yeah, usually I love learning but I couldn't wait for class to be over today,” Justin said with a yawn, which was so unusual for him Astrid and Harold were in shock, Justin saw this clearly on their faces “What? It's gloomy today” he tried to defend himself.
“Yeah I get it, days like this I could stay in bed all day” Harold replied looking outside the window from where they were sitting, it was cold and pouring outside which made his prosthetic hurt, he never understood why the weather would sometimes affect his leg but the phantom pains never got any better.
They hung out for the next 30 minutes talking about nonsense until they decided to get back to their dorms to rest, but before that Harold suggested they grab coffee and breakfast for their other friends, they've know each other for as long as they can remember so they knew everyones usual order, and somehow ended up all getting dorms with eachother instead of having to have a random roommate, it was nice to skip that awkward stage of college.
Astrid and Justin agreed, considering the day it was they knew their roommate wasn't going to get it on their own, especially because it was almost time for their class.
The twins and Gary chose the later times for classes, they wanted to be able to sleep in and they weren't exactly morning people like Harold, Astrid, and Justin are.
They ordered for their friends and walked back to their dorms together, the rain wouldn't let up but luckily they brought umbrellas.
When they got to the dorms hallway they split up and went their separate ways, their dorms wasnt far from each other, everyone was a few doors down.
Harold walked into the sight of Laverne still sleeping, he was sleeping on his side with one hand hanging off the bed, the other hugging a pillow. He chose the left side of the room and went all out with his decorations, hanging posters of his favorite bands and adding in as much of his favorite color as he could.
His sheets were white with a green blanket and pillow cases, stuffed animals scattered around his bed and extra pillows on the floor. His mother insisted on him having them “They'll make your bed look more decorative and tidy when fixed” she told him, but he didn't care much for them.
Harold kept his side of the room more simple, no decorations just a shelf for his books and a few dragon figurines he loved, his desk was at the end of his bed kept tidy with just his laptop out and the rest of his stuff put away.
On his bed he had black sheets with a red blanket and red pillow cases, no decorative pillows or stuffed animals, just one small dragon plush his mother made him when he was little.
In the middle between their two nightstands was a glass tank for Laverne's bearded dragon Belch, it was a big tank taking up most of the space but Harold didn't mind, he had his pet Toothless who had stuff all over their dorm and Laverne never complained about it.
Laverne wore a white oversized T-shirt and gray shorts for pajamas, also a shark tooth necklace on a black string, his sister had the matching one. The blanket was halfway off of him and his shirt must have gone up while he was sleeping because it was looking more like a crop top than a T-shirt.
Toothless came to greet Harold, rubbing himself against Harold's legs as cats do, Harold bent down to pet him “Yes I missed you too bud” he told him. He set down the coffee and breakfast on Laverne's desk at the edge of his bed and looked at the time on his watch, it was 10:10 am and Laverne had class at 10:30, which means he had 20 minutes to get ready.
Harold went over to Laverne and shook him gently “Verne, you're gonna be late for class” he said softly, he didn't want to panic him.
Laverne cracked one eye open slightly. “Five more minutes…” he mumbled, his voice still drowsy from sleep.
“You don't have 5 more minutes bud, you need to be to class in 20” Harold told him, Larverne's eyes shot open “What! What time is it?” he asked, “10:11 am” Harold answered.
With an exaggerated groan, Laverne buried his face in his hands. “I’m going to be late!” he whined, annoyance in his voice.
“No, you won’t! Just get up; I’ll help you” Harold said, tugging at Laverne’s arm to pull him from bed.
Astrids pov.
Astrid expected Eugene to be almost ready to get going to class when she walked in, instead she was greeted with the sight of Eugene still sleeping, she lay on her back with the blanket up to her chest and her hair a mess, she was wearing purple button-up pajamas and the same shark tooth necklace Laverne had, they never took those off.
Her side of the room was a mix of purple and green, she had a purple blanket and pillowcases with white sheets but some green decorations were scattered on the walls, purple and green pillows, and stuffed animals thrown on the floor.
Astrid's side of the room was kept neat, with a few beach-themed decorations and her bed being blue and white. The sheets were white with a blue blanket and blue pillowcases.
Her bird Stormfly is flying freely around the room but her cage is set up by Astrid's bed, also Eugene's bearded dragon's cage in the middle between their two beds.
Astrid set Eugene's coffee shop order down on her desk and put a hand to her forehead, did Eugene seriously not have an alarm? Or did she just ignore it? Either way, she had to wake her up and help her get ready.
She went over to Eugene and shook her “Eugene! You're gonna be late for class if you don't wake up now” Astrid said crossing her arms.
Eugene woke up confused, her alarm hadn't even gone off yet “Relax will ya? My alarm hasn't gone off” she said rolling over and pulling the covers over her.
“Well it's 10:11 and you've got 19 minutes to get to class,” Astrid said annoyed “What?” Eugene screamed bolting up from her bed.
“Ugh! Come on, I'll help you” Astrid just wanted to go to sleep, but she decided what's 19 more minutes? She'll go to sleep after she gets Eugene to class on time.
Justins pov.
Justin knew Gary wasn't going to be up when he walked in, so he wasn't surprised to see him snuggled up in his bed cuddling his favorite stuffed animal (that only Justin was allowed to know about) and his dog, Hookfang, sleeping at the end of his bed.
Gary was wearing a red T-shirt and black sweatpants to sleep in, he hated actual pajamas.
Gary's side of the room was bland, his bed was plain, white sheets with a gray blanket and gray pillowcases. The walls on his side were bare, with no decorations, Gary said he didn't care for decorating his dorm as long as he had space for all his stuff.
Justin's side was a bit more decorated, with shelves on the wall that held all his books and posters of his favorite things to learn about. He also had some plants by the window.
His bed was pretty simple, all White bedding with a few orange decorative pillows. Gary hated the orange but it was Justin's favorite color so he didn't complain too much.
Justin set down Gary's breakfast on the nearest desk and his pug Meatlug came running over to him “Hey girl, I missed you too” he said petting her.
He went over to Gary and shook him awake “What do you want nerd” Gary said stirring awake, his voice still heavy with sleep.
“You're running late for class, again,” Justin said annoyed, how many times was he going to have to wake Gary up for class? “Do I have to go?” Gary asked rubbing his eyes.
“Well your parents are paying for it so yes, you do” Justin replied crossing his arms, Gary whined “Fine!” he got out of bed and headed towards the bathroom.
Harolds pov.
“Get in the shower I'll find you clothes,” Harold told Laverne “Something comfortable please, it looks like gloom and despair outside” Laverne replied as he was looking out their window, he hated these kinds of days, it was hard for him to be funny when all he wanted to do is sleep and was running late for class.
Harold nodded and Laverne went to their bathroom to shower, leaving the door unlocked for Harold to bring his clothes. Harold went over to Vern's closet and picked out a light grey sweater with the grey sweatpants to match, he also got him socks and underwear, and his black and white comfortable sneakers that he wore almost every day.
He brought his stuff to him in the bathroom and set it out on the sink counter, Larverne was already in the shower “Vern, I picked you out a grey jogging set and black and white sneakers” Harold told him “Sounds good, thank you” Lavarne replied “Of course” Harold said.
Astrids pov.
Astrid had Eugene get in the shower first things first, it takes her a long time to wash her hair, so Astrid was left with picking her out an outfit for the day.
Eugene requested something comfortable but nothing that looked like pajamas, she still wanted to look cute.
So Astrid picked out a black flowy skirt, it was a short skirt and it was cold today so she also picked out a pair of black nylons and a green oversized sweater to go with it, for shoes she picked out a pair of black boots and then she grabbed her underthings and brought Eugene her clothes.
She set them down on the bathroom sink counter "I hope you like what I picked because I am not picking out another outfit” Astrid said sternly.
“Aw, you don't want to play dress up?” Eugene teased poking her head out of the shower curtain “No Eugene, I do not” Astrid crossed her arms and sighed “You're no fun” Eugene said going back to showering, “Im not trying to be fun I'm trying to get you to class on time” Astrid scolded “Okay, Mom” Eugene rolled her eyes and Astrid sighed getting out the bathroom to get Eugenes stuff together for the day.
Justins pov.
Gary left his clothes out the night before, he didn't like it when Justin picked out his clothes because the outfits he made were too “nerdy,” so he picked himself out a black jogging set with white sneakers the night before and set it on his desk.
He forgot to grab his stuff however before going in the shower so Justin brought it to him, Justin closed the bathroom door behind him and then got to packing Gary's stuff for the day. He got his backpack and packed his laptop, notebook, pencil case, and a laptop charger since Gary always forgets to charge his laptop he also packed his wallet and keys for him.
Once he was done he fed Hookfang and Meatlug knowing Gary isn't going to have time to feed Hookfang himself and then he grabbed Gary's water bottle filling it with ice water and putting it in the side pocket on his backpack.
He couldn't think of anything else Gary would need, he liked the lunch the cafeteria was serving today so that won't be an issue, since there was nothing left to help with he decided to fix Gary's bed for him, it was simple enough and he liked their space to be clean.
Harolds pov.
Harold then went over to Laverne's desk and grabbed his backpack, he made sure his laptop was charged which surprisingly it was and packed it in his backpack, he also packed his notebooks and pencils that had been left out from the night before, a portable charger for his phone because he had seen Laverne only had 10 percent, and then he packed Lavernes wallet and keys for their dorm.
He realized Laverne wasn't going to eat the college lunch today, chicken and French fries were on the menu and Laverne didn't eat chicken, so he needed to find something to pack him for lunch.
Before doing that he took Lavernes water bottle and filled it up with ice and water putting it in the pocket on the side of his backpack.
He looked in their mini fridge to see what they had, a few frozen TV dinners, some yogurt and berries, and string cheese. He put an ice pack in his lunch box and packed him a Frozen dinner and a yogurt, it's better than nothing and there is a microwave in the cafeteria for him to heat it up.
Laverne got out of the shower hopping on one foot as he tried to get his shoe on the other, “Easy there Vern, you might fall” Harold looked at him crossing his arms “I gotta get my-” Laverne started but was cut off “Backpack packed? Already did it, your laptop, pencils, notebook, keys, wallet, all packed as well as a portable charger your phones on 10 percent, also packed you a lunch because the cafeteria is serving chicken today, your water bottle is full with ice and water and I got you a coffee and some breakfast earlier.”
Laverne stood there, his jaw dropped and shocked espression on his face, he knew how put together Harold was but didn't realize how on top of things he would be for him, even remembering to pack him a lunch and get him breakfast, he could cry from how thankful he was but instead just tackled Harold in a hug “Thank you thank you thank you!” he cried out.
Harold hugged back “your welcome Verne, now sit down and eat breakfast while I fix your hair” Harold instructed, Laverne shot him a grin and did as he was told, Harold wasn't the best at fixing hair by any means, but he knew how to brush hair and make it look decent.
Laverne's hair was smooth and long with a little bit of a curl, he kept it in hairstyles most of the time but today he was just going to keep it down, Harold wasn't skilled enough to do anything special and it looked fine down if brushed.
Harold finished with his hair and set down the brush at the same time Laverne got done with his breakfast, usually, it would take him longer to eat but he was in a hurry today.
Astrids pov.
Astrid got Eugene's backpack and packed her stuff for her, just her laptop, wallet, and keys needed to be packed, she didn't take anything else out of her bag the night before.
Astrid went over to Eugene's nightstand and took her water bottle, filling it with ice and water and then putting it in the side pocket of her backpack.
Eugene walked out of the bathroom scrambling to find her hairbrush, “Have you seen my hairbrush?” she asked Astrid “It's right here, sit down I'll do your hair you should eat breakfast before you leave” Astrid said gesturing to the coffee and breakfast left on the desk “Aw you got me breakfast? You do love me” Eugene teased and Astrid rolled her eyes.
“Sit down and let me do your hair before I change my mind” Astrid demanded “Okay, okay relax” Eugene sat down and began eating breakfast letting Astrid dry her hair and then braid it into her usual style.
“All done, you're free to go,” Astrid said when she got done with her hair, “Guess I'll feed Barf and be on my way then,” Eugene said getting up “I would offer to feed him for you, but I am not touching his food”
"You don't want to touch crickets? So surprising” Eugene joked and Astrid rolled her eyes, it didn't take long for Eugene to feed Barf and then she was rushing out the door, “Thanks for the help, so happy I got stuck with you as a roommate and not some random mean girl” Eugene tried to thank Astrid, she wasn't the best at anything sentimental but she gave it her best try.
Astrid tried to hide the smile that was creeping onto her lips “You're welcome Gene, and most of the girls here aren't mean, you would've been fine but yes I'm happy you're my roommate too now go before you're late and all of this was for nothing.”
“Okay, okay I'm going,” Eugene said grabbing her umbrella as she rushed out the door.
Justins pov.
Gary got out of the shower and immediately ran to get his bag packed but was stopped by Justin “I already packed your backpack, everything you need should be there and you got breakfast on your desk”
Gary looked over at his desk to see his favorite order from the coffee shop and his bag packed for the day “Aw, thanks nerd” Gary said going over to eat his breakfast and Justin shook his head “your welcome Gary, do you need anything else?” he asked.
“I don't think so, just need to feed Hooky and I'll be out of here” Gary replied “No need, I already fed him” Justin said with a smile “Wow, you're really on it today,” Gary said in shock “When am I not” Justin asked with a raised eyebrow “good point” Gary replied.
Gary finished up his breakfast and headed towards the door “See ya later nerd” he told Justin before he left “Wait, take an umbrella” Justin said chasing Gary to hand him an umbrella “Oh yeah, good idea.”
Harolds pov.
“You got 5 minutes to get to class, is that enough time?” Harold asked after looking at his watch “Maybe if I run” Laverne replied half joking, he would have to walk fast but he could make it.
“Oh wait, I have to feed-” Laverne didn't get to finish his sentence as he was interrupted by Harold “I'll feed Belch, you just get to class” Laverne let out a sigh and put his backpack on, he hugged Harold one last time “What would I do without you” he said “be late to class probably” Harold joked hugging back.
“Go on, out the door now” Harold pushed Laverne toward the door but handed him an umbrella before he left to which Laverne thanked him for before he started to run off.
Harold stood in the doorway while Laverne was about to start walking to class, Gary and Eugene walked out of their dorms with Astrid and Justin standing in their doorways “Are you guys running late to” Laverne asked walking backwards to get going but be able to talk to them at the same time.
“Uh yeah, if it wasn't for Astrid I would not have been ready on time” Eugene replied catching up with her brother.
“Yeah Justin had to shake me awake, all I wanna do is sleep,” Gary said.
Harold who was still in the doorway shook his head and looked over to Astrid and Justin.
“I swear, it's like their our kids,” Astrid said from her doorway “They basically are” Justin replied.
“Yeah, but I wouldn't have it any other way,” Harold said as he watched them run to class.
The others chuckled and agreed with him, “Alright I'm going back to bed, Goodnight boys” Astrid said yawning, even though it was still morning.
“Yeah I'm gonna do the same, goodnight guys” Harold replied and Justin said Goodnight before going in his dorm.
Harold didn't immediately go to sleep though, he fed Belch and Toothless their breakfast and tidied up Lavernes' side of the room, fixing his bed and picking up anything on the floor.
Not because he wanted it clean, but because he wanted to do something nice for him. When the room was all clean and the pets had their breakfast he changed into something more comfortable putting on black sweatpants and his favorite red hoodie and then he was finally able to rest.
Bonus because why not.
Laverne walked into his dorm after his classes, he was so tired he couldn't wait to get into his bed. He dropped his backpack on the floor by the doorway and closed the door behind him, when he looked ahead of him he was greeted with the sight of his bed made and Harold sleeping comfortably in his own bed with Toothless sleeping curled up at the end of said bed.
He walked over to Belch to feed him his lunch since it was about time for it, he then looked over to his bed, he wanted to take a nap but for some reason the thought of sleeping in his own bed right now wasn't very appealing, he looked over to Harold, and the thought of cuddling with him sounded much better.
It's not like they never cuddled, they've been close friends for years even before college had forced them to be roommates, sometimes when one of them became stressed from assignments and class work, a breakdown ended in cuddling for the rest of the night.
He took off his shoes and then walked over to Harold and climbed into bed, pulling the blanket over him and snuggling up close to his chest. Harold woke up slightly from all the movement, he opened his eyes just a little bit “huh…oh hey Verne” He mumbled still half asleep.
“Hey Harold” Laverne replied “how was your class” Harold asked putting his arms around Lavernes waist and pulling him close, “It was alright, I couldn't focus I just wanted to sleep, I think I fell asleep for at least ten minutes before I woke up from the professor talking I swear that guy just goes on and on for days, I mean does he ever get tired of talking?” Laverne rambled on and Harold chuckled “well, I'm pretty sure that's his job Verne” he replied, his eyes closed as he listened to Laverne go on and on about his day.
Harold started running his fingers through Lavernes hair as Laverne told him about what happened at lunch with Eugene and Gary, listening to him ramble on about anything on his mind.
Harold knew Laverne would get tired and fall asleep eventually and he didn't mind listening to him talk, he kept his eyes closed because he was tired but replied every now and then with a “mhm” he kept running his fingers through his hair and occasionally rubbing his back.
Soon enough he heard Laverne yawn and feel him shift to get more comfortable in his arms, “Tired huh?” Harold asked and Laverne nodded “The rain makes me sleepy” Harold chuckled “Yeah me too, get some rest” Laverne yawned again “Don't have to tell me twice, Goodnight Harry” Laverne said using his nickname for Harold, Harold smiled and replied back “Goodnight love.”
