“I said no” despite Summer repeating this several times. Lucy wouldn’t let it drop. “But don’t you want to know, so you can” Lucy paused trying to think of a decent end to the sentence.
“So we can what?” Summer questioned sweetly. Lucy shrugged “Co-ordinate?” Summer laughed. “I don’t want to know what dress Emmy is wearing, to the fall dance ok”
“What’s going on here?” A new voice joined them. Quinn slid into the seat next to Lucy.
“Lucy went shopping with Emmy for dresses for the fall dance. She is desperate to tell me, about Emmy’s dress”
Summer flipped a page over in her textbook. “Won’t that spoil the surprise?” Quinn asked looking between the two sisters. Summer threw her hands up in exasperation.
Lucy turned to him “You’re supposed to be on my side” he shrugged. “Im sure Emmy wouldn’t want you to spoil it”
“Emmy wouldn’t want you to spoil what?” A new voice said from behind them. Lucy and Quinn turned to look at Emmy. Both suddenly stumbling over their words.
Emmy looked over at Summer for an explanation. She smiled “Lucy was going to tell me about your dress for the dance” she said bluntly.
Emmy’s face fell, “She didn’t did she?” She asked rounding on Lucy. “No despite her more persistent efforts. I told her I didn’t want to know”
Summer saw Emmy calm a little. Walking around the table to stand behind summer. She bent down to kiss her cheek in greeting. Summer was still getting used to showing affection.
Emmy sat beside her, she placed her hand on her knee. As they watched the debate between Lucy and Quinn.
Summer didn’t get nervous, well only one thing or one person made her nervous. As she straightened her dress. It was a gold strapless gown.
Emmy made her incredibly nervous, would she like her dress? Would she like her hair? The list could go on and on. She shook her head. “Get a grip” she muttered to herself.
Lucy was already downstairs talking with her parents. When Quinn pulled up. Quinn had gotten out of the drivers seat to open the passenger door.
He held his hand out, Emmy stepped out in a shimmering green dress. Smiling somewhat self consciously. “You look fantastic” Quinn said with a grin. “I’m sure Summer will agree”
He escorted her to the front door. Lucy opened it, “look at you in a tie” she said pulling at Quinn’s bow tie. “I know I look fantastic” He said straightened it.
“Emmy you look. Wow” Emmy smiled in thanks. “Summer!” Mrs Field shouted up the staircase. Lucy moved to stand beside Quinn. As Summer walked down the stairs. She was sure time had stopped.
She had never seen anyone so beautiful. Summer stopped just in front of her, biting her lip. “Hi” she said softly. Emmy laughed “Hi” They must have been standing there staring at each other for a long time. As Mr field cleared his throat.
“Pictures” he said cheerfully picking up his camera. Summer knew resistance was futile. So they all moved out onto the porch. Lucy and Quinn went first.
She suddenly felt nervous again, Emmy grasped her hand. As Mrs field positioned them on the front porch. Fully expecting her mother to position, them as friend like as possible.
She just smiled and said “Just be yourself hunny” grasping her free hand. Suddenly feeling like she was on top of the world. She let go of Emmy’s hand.
Moving behind her, to wrap her arms around her waist. Resting her head on Emmy’s shoulder. As her father clicked the photo, she couldn’t help the grin on her face.
Walking into the dance with Emmy on her arm was one of those classic moments. When the music stops and everyone turns to stare at you.
Summer took Emmy’s hand and led her into the middle of the dance floor. The music started back up again. She leant closer to whisper in her ear.
“Everybody is staring” Summer glanced around them. She kissed Emmy’s cheek.
“Let them”
