The Care and Keeping of Your Haunted Doll

By: Ed Warren

  1. Obtain a haunted doll (possessed only by demons according to Catholic Doctrine)
  2. Have safeguards in place
    1. priest's blessings, holy water, Latin scripture, etc.
    2. psychic wife
  3. Create a strong barrier. (Annabelle is protected by church glass, wood seeped in holy water, and blessings twice a month)
  4. Interaction is key! Creating a comfortable atmosphere for the doll is important to the upkeep of one’s doll. Soft furnishings, mending where necessary, and even communication is important to creating a strong connection and even friendship with the haunted doll. Feel free to take her out to the movies, have tea parties, or simply have a conversation.

Ed Warren paused where he sat at his desk, and turned to the doll sitting beside him. Raggedy red hair and glass button eyes bored into him, and he shifted uncomfortably in his seat. This was for research. He and Lorraine had been wanting to write a book for a long time, and since the years were catching up to them, they needed the extra income. Besides, after the fame that came from Annabelle in the newspapers, surely people would want to read this! Perhaps he could even give tours of their museum—let people interact with those objects for themselves. Safely, of course. Despite the spiritual safeguards in place he still didn’t quite trust people enough to just let them wander into his basement. But it was a thought stored for later. He returned to the draft that sat on his desk, and decidedly ignored the doll levitating beside him. She just wanted attention.

  1. Keep them in check. Just like an unruly child, spirits need to learn discipline. Simply shouting Latin scripture at them doesn’t always seem to calm their demonic temperament. Simply saying “hey, stop that!” can be enough to satiate any unwanted activity.

He turned to the doll on his left, and tested his theory.

“Hey, stop that!”

Annabelle collapsed back in the small rocking chair beside him, limp as a rag doll.

Notes:

Yes I wrote this as a writing warmup with my partner. I’m not even huge in the fandom but I do love a haunted doll!

Stay spooky!
