When the world fades away

Summary:

“You spoil me,” Max teased, his eyes sparkling with mischief.

George chuckled, brushing a crumb from his chin. “It’s only fair,” he said. “After all, you deserve all the spoiling the world can offer,” he added tenderly, leaning back in his chair to enjoy the peace of their cozy kitchen.

Work Text:

“My dearest heart, what is it for breakfast?”

George’s voice broke the peaceful atmosphere in the kitchen of their cozy cottage. Max, who was busy preparing their breakfast, smiled as soon as he heard his husband’s voice.

Now he turned with a playful glint in his eye. “Guess,” he teased, gesturing toward the stovetop where pots simmered softly. George leaned forward, sniffing the air with exaggerated enthusiasm. He feigned deep concentration, tapping his chin thoughtfully. “Is it your famous honey-glazed ham?” he guessed, eyes twinkling with anticipation.

Max chuckled and shook his head.
“Not this time,” he replied, lifting the lid off a nearby pot. A warm aroma wafted out, filling the room with the comforting scent of spiced apples and cinnamon. George raised an eyebrow, intrigued by the delightful fragrance. “Apple cinnamon porridge?” he guessed again, his smile widening.

“Yes! Your favorite,” Max confirmed, reaching for the wooden spoon to give it a final stir.

George clapped his hands together in delight. “And freshly baked bread, too?” he asked hopefully, scanning the kitchen for any sign of warm loaves. Max laughed, nodding as he pointed to the covered basket on the counter. “Warm and ready,” he said. With a triumphant nod, George made his way to the table, anticipation growing. He took a seat, already imagining the comforting meal ahead.

As Max ladled a generous helping of porridge into a bowl, he watched George’s eager expression soften into one of contentment. The cozy crackle of the fireplace added to the warm atmosphere, wrapping them in a soothing embrace.

“And one loaf of freshly baked bread for the best husband in the world.”

Max handed his husband a loaf of bread, and George hummed happily. He took a bite of the bread and sighed in contentment. “I am truly blessed by the heavens for having you as the other part of my soul. Your bread always tastes like love and sunshine, my dear husband,” he continued, eyes sparkling with joy.

Max blushed at his words, his cheeks warming like the summer sun.

“Your kind words flatter me so, George,” he replied softly, a small smile gracing his lips.

“As long as I am by your side,” George said, raising another piece of bread to his lips, “this heart of mine will know nothing but love, joy, and gratitude. Each day with you is a gift I cherish more dearly than the last.”

Max’s heart swelled with love, a gentle warmth spreading through his chest. The two of them sat silently for a moment, basking in the quiet comfort of each other’s presence. Outside, the golden rays of the late afternoon sun filtered through the window, painting the room with a serene glow.

“Such peace is all I could ever ask for,” Max whispered as he glanced out the window, watching a pair of robins flit from branch to branch, their delicate wings carrying them effortlessly through the air.

“A blush of robin!”

George laughed softly, amused by his husband’s whimsical observation. “Indeed, they dance through life as we do,” he mused, his gaze following the playful birds.

“The old folks believe they bring news from our loved ones. Perhaps it’s a sign that happiness and love are near,” Max suggested, his voice filled with quiet optimism.

“Perhaps it is,” George agreed, his eyes meeting his husband’s with a knowing twinkle.

“Come closer, my dear.”

Max obeyed, stepping closer to him. George smiled softly before taking a piece of the bread and offering to hand-feed his husband.

“Open the cave, my dear.”

Max giggled at his playful tone and obediently opened his mouth, leaning in to take a bite. The bread was warm, and he savored its comforting taste, feeling the love in every crumb. George watched him with eyes full of affection, his heart swelling with gratitude for these small, cherished moments they shared.

George pulled Max onto his lap and wrapped his arms around his waist to continue feeding his husband affectionately. As Max settled comfortably, he laid his head against George’s shoulder, letting out a contented sigh. In their little world, nothing mattered more than gentle moments like these.

Just Max and George.
Just both of them.

After moments of eating silently, basking in each other’s presence, Max shifted so that he faced his husband’s handsome face and cupped his cheek lovingly. “George,” he murmured, his voice soft and full of warmth, “I could live like this forever. Just you, me, and the world outside fading away.”

George smiled, his heart touched by his husband’s words.

“I don’t think I can live in this world if somehow one day I’ll lose you. For a life without you is the same as chaining my soul in this body of mine, forcing me to exist in this cruel world of endless nothingness, devoid of you. You are my light, the only reason I find beauty in this world,” Max whispered, his eyes shimmering with unshed tears.

“I can’t make a promise to never leave you because it would be very hypocritical of me, for I know without a doubt that I would erase myself from existence, burned into ashes until nothing is left of me if that means you get to see another day. But I can promise you one thing, my dear. I will try everything I can until there’s no way left for me to save you other than to leave you. I will stand by you through every storm, every darkness, so that I may shield you from life’s trials,” George vowed, wiping away a tear.

Max leaned in, pressing his forehead against George’s, feeling the rhythm of his breath. They lingered there, suspended in a moment that seemed to stretch into eternity, a sanctuary where worries dared not intrude. The world around them faded away, leaving only the whispers of their hearts echoing in the silence
