Chapter 1: First sight

Chapter Text

It was misting and the night had just begun.

Nightwing stood on a rooftop in Bludhaven, guarding a lonesome and empty street.

There was evidence of a stalker going about, out here. So far, he had yet to show up. So far, no one had walked the streets he was guarding but he was expectant and patient.

Nightwing was good at hunting prey.

And prey was what you were about to become.

He saw you before you caught sight of either man; neither the one trailing you, nor the one who leapt off a building to protect you.

He aimed well; he landed by you and between you and the man trailing you. The man ran away the moment he caught sight of Nightwing.

While Nightwing was nowhere near done with his prey, he knew caring for the victims was as important as hunting down their villains.

He turned to you, cheerful as daylight, saying “Well, that was easy”

Your gaze was locked on the man running to save himself from Nightwing. You looked surprised.

Shaking your thoughts off, you turned to Nightwing.

Before you could thank him, you stumbled back and fell onto your bottom.

The world had burst into colour.

Nightwing, ever the gentleman, grit his teeth and held out his hand to you.

You got off the pavement, thanked him and turned to walk away.

He was stunned.

Dick had thought a lot about his destined one. He’d pondered everything from their gender, appearance to how he’d protect them.

He’d expected everything from a vigilante to a sweet stranger at a cafe.

What he’d never considered before now, was the possibility that his soulmate could be uninterested in him; neither as Nightwing, nor as Dick Grayson.

Or maybe it was the shock of seeing colour for the first time? Mixed with fright?

He ran to your side. “Let me walk you home”

You stopped when he caught up to you. Your lips were pressed thin as tears pooled in your eyes, but you nodded and continued walking.

He figured he was right about the shock and walked you home.

You said not a single word, the whole way home.
