Chapter Text
Okay, whatever my Lele says, Papa will listen.” Gao Tu kissed his temple and hugged him tight, feeling his son’s little arms squeeze back.
Lele’s birthday was in just two days. Quing had offered Gao Tu a budget for a small food celebration, but he had refused. This time, he wanted to do it himself to put in the effort for his child. Qing had understood, smiling at his determination.
Gao Tu spread the birthday theme options in front of Lele and waited. His son’s eyes lit up immediately, and he pointed eagerly at a picture of Mickey Mouse on his cellphone. He had been obsessed with Mickey Mouse, watching every show on TV whenever he could. Gao Tu smiled and clicked the order button. It should arrive tomorrow and he couldn’t wait to see the joy on Lele’s face.
It was only one day before Lele’s birthday. Lele was practically bouncing with excitement, even insisting on helping his Papa blow up the balloons. Gao Tu busied himself with the decorations and gathered all the ingredients he needed for the little celebration.
As his son chattered endlessly about how excited he was for tomorrow, Gao Tu listened with a full heart, smiling at every word. His little Lele deserved the world, and he would do everything to give it to him.
Finally, it was the day Lele had been waiting for. Gao Qing had taken a day off to help him organize his son’s mini celebration. He busied himself with the food, decorations, and everything else, with Quing by his side.
In the middle of arranging the dishes on the table, he suddenly remembered something.
“Qing, can you take over this for a while? I have to go somewhere,” he said.
“Of course. Where are you going?” Qing asked curiously.
Gao Tu leaned close and whispered in her ear. “I’m going to buy that Mickey Mouse toy Lele has been eyeing.”
Qing smiled. “Go ahead. I’m sure Lele will be so happy. Don’t worry about anything here.”
“Thank you. I have to go,” he replied.
Even though he was sweaty from all the preparations and still hadn’t changed clothes, he rushed to the mall as fast as he could, hoping to return before Lele woke and found out.
As he entered the mall, he darted straight for the toy section. He knew the toys here were expensive, but that was exactly why he had worked so hard— to be able to give Lele exactly what he wanted.
As his eyes landed on that very specific Mickey Mouse toy, he realized it was the last one left and thankfully, he was just about to grab it when a long hand shot out of the same box.
He firmly held the box. No— he wouldn’t let go. He had to get this first. This was for his son’s birthday. He turned toward the man who was also reaching for it, but the man looked at him first. He froze. He didn’t even have the chance to utter the word he was about to say. It was as if his world had completely stopped.
What should he do?
Run?
Snatch it away?
Hello?
Say “This is for your son, idiot. Give it to me.”
He had saved up for this gift for days. For Shen Wenlang, it probably cost nothing. Shows how their worlds were so different. He should just hand it over and leave him alone.
But he didn’t know why he couldn’t move. Memories, scars, and pain came flooding back like a flash, yet through it all, his love for him still stood out above everything.
“Gao Tu…” His voice was hoarse.
“M-Mr. Shen.”
