Gemütlich

Summary:

Imagines and oneshots for the Creature/Adam Frankenstein. Based on Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation.

Chapter 1: First Encounter

Notes:

I’d like to dedicate this chapter to cybille and their delightful Frankenstein fic. Please give it a read as it inspired me.

I watched the film and I absolutely LOVED it! Past me from years ago who read the book felt fulfilled - I was always so heartbroken no one focused on the Creature’s inner (and outer) beauty. They just made him out to be some Halloween archetype.

That is to say, it’s been years since I read the original novel and I’m not confident enough to say this collection is book-faithful :( Nonetheless, I hope you enjoy it!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

You

  • You’re of middle-class status. You’re expecting to live your life as usual - be chaste, modest, and an appealing candidate for marriage.
  • You dress in your most formal. You’re about to visit a relative in the countryside. You hop into the carriage and rest for the leisurely journey.
  • That is until a snowstorm arrives. Your carriage is upturned. One horse twists its leg in the deep snow. The coachman takes the less harmed steed and tells you he’ll look for help. He does not return - he must have lost his way.
  • You shiver in the bitter cold, you’re only warmth a meagre lighter. You hear wolves howling. You close your eyes, ready to accept death.
  • That is until a hulking shadow approaches.
  • You think this must be the grim reaper. His face is obscured by a hood. He is taller than the average man.
  • Then he reaches for your arm. You see he has the injured horse by the reins. You know that horse - a stubborn and feisty thing. No one could just tame it.
  • That horse must either be deeply frightened or incentivized (but even its favorite sugar cubes did not usually ease its bad temper)
  • You do what all women of your time cannot help in dire situations. Faint.

The Creature

  • It’s been a year since he bid goodbye to his creator in the cold Northern Ice. Nonetheless, deep scars remain. Forgiven but not forgotten.
  • The Creature has found himself a “home” in one of the outskirt provinces of Germany. Here, houses  are few and far between.
  • It doesn’t matter if there are no doctors, markets, or crowds. As soon as he learned a large library was there, he thought it the perfect place.
  • It gets lonely. But he’d rather be lonely than in pain.
  • But then again, what if loneliness was pain?
  • All he knows is that he can’t stand seeing others in pain. When he saw you shivering in the cold by your carriage, something moved within him.
  • He wasn’t surprised you fainted. He patiently took you into his arms. He took care to guide your injured horse, too.
