Work Text:
2 months after the Ozdust
Life after the Ozdust felt different. Sweeter. Now that her rivalry with Elphaba had turned into friendship, her world had gained some color. She learned to enjoy the quiet and comfort of having a roommate that one could actually get along with. She even found herself looking forward to seeing Elphaba at the end of the day. Oh, they still had their moments of disagreement, they were only Ozian of course. But the jealousy that bit at her whenever she looked at or thought about Elphaba had turned into something else entirely. Mornings waking up to some new prank or biting arguments that drew the attention of all their classmates had turned to mornings waking up to hear Elphaba chanting some spell and sitting on the balcony together watching the boats bob gently on the water and enjoying the breeze.
She still saw Pfannee and Shenshen, and of course, spent time with Fiyero, but something had shifted between her and Elphaba that night. She saw her in a different way, something more.
One evening, after spending the day with Pfannee and Shenshen, Galinda returned to her room to find Elphaba reading on her bed. She was already in her night robe, her eyeglasses slightly falling down the bridge of her nose. Elphaba had been pouring into her studies. She always had, but as of late, she was focused. Determined to win over the Wizard.
Galinda waved and jumped onto her own bed. “Elphie, put that book down! It’s time to relax!”
“How was spending time with Pfannee and Shenshen?” Elphaba asked, without looking up and decidedly not putting her book down.
“You should have come with me! They don’t mind.”
Elphaba looked up and gave her a small smile. “It’s all right. There’s this spell that I’ve been trying to get right, and I think I almost have it.” Elphaba pushed her glasses up her nose and began reading again.
Galinda pouted at Elphaba’s lack of attention and moved to her dresser to undress for the night. She grabbed a satin pink nightgown that fell right at her mid-thigh and pulled another sheer pink robe that ended with pink puffs at the bottom and flowed around her feet. The long sleeves that puffed at the wrists matched the puffs near her feet. As she slipped on her robe, she could feel Elphaba’s eyes on her. Sure enough, as she spun around, and her robe flared around her, Elphaba was staring at her. Galinda’s cheeks burned, and she was glad that the dim light hid some of the pink in her cheeks.
Even though she had been caught, Elphaba didn’t avert her gaze. Instead she asked, “Can I ask a question?”
Galinda’s eyes lit up as she approached Elphaba’s bed, glad for the invitation to engage. She settled on top of the bed next to Elphaba, their knees gently touched. “Of course, Elphie!”
“What do you talk about when you’re with them?”
“With Pfannee and Shenshen?” Galinda clarified.
Elphaba nodded, shutting her book and placing it next to her on the bed.
“Well, we mostly talk about some of our acquaintances from childhood. What they’re up to, and what we used to do during school retreats.”
Elphaba furrowed her brows. “Like what?”
Galinda gaped. “You’ve never been to a school retreat?”
The thought left Galinda’s mouth before she could help it. Of course. Ozdust was her first party. Why would Elphaba have been allowed to go to a retreat?
Elphaba wrung her hands into her black nightgown.
“I’m sorry, Elphie. I didn’t mean to—“
“It’s all right.” Elphaba shook her head. They sat in silence for a few moments. “So tell me about it.”
Galinda felt herself smile widely. “Oh Oz, where do I start? Witches and Wizards, seek-and-hide, and then when we got older we played games that were more…scandalocious.” She whispered the last word like a secret.
“Scandalocious?”
“Games where you’d guess the other’s crush, or you’d have to be physically close. I was wonderful at ‘Are You Thrillified?’” Elphaba continued to look at her strangely, so she kept explaining.
Galinda’s smile widened mischievously. “You take your hand, like so,” she took her hand and placed it on Elphaba’s knee. She locked eyes with Elphaba. “And then you look into the other person's eyes and ask if they’re thrillified.” Galinda took a dramatic breath in, her eyes locking onto Elphaba's. "Are you thrillified, Elphie?"
Elphaba looked at Galinda’s hand on her knee and said nothing. Galinda’s head nodded, encouraging Elphaba to respond. “Oh!” Elphaba said. “No, I’m not thrillified.”
Elphaba’s eyes lingered on hers for a moment. It must have been a trick of the light, but was there a tinge of pink on Elphaba’s face? When Elphaba blushed was it pink, or would her face turn a darker green? Galinda quickly removed her hand from Elphaba’s knee and cleared her throat.
"How do you win?"
“You keep moving your hand closer up their leg until someone says they’re thrillified.”
Elphaba nodded. “Ok, I think I understand. When was the last time you played?”
“Oh it’s been so many clock ticks since my last game.” Galinda confessed. She smirked thinking about her friends in the past. The way their breaths would catch in their throats. The nervous laughs that would betray their feelings as she claimed victory. “But I never lost.”
Elphaba’s eyes twinkled. “Well, maybe it’s a good thing we hadn’t met, because I would’ve taken your crown.”
Galinda’s mouth dropped. “Elphaba Thropp, are you challenging me?”
“No, I wouldn’t dream of it! Wouldn’t want you to lose your streak.”
Galinda slapped Elphaba’s shoulder playfully. “That is it, Elphie! We are playing." Galinda turned her body to face Elphaba more fully. Both adjusted so that they sat across from each other. Their legs criss-crossed on the bed. "And as a first time guest, you can go first.”
Elphaba placed her hand on Galinda’s knee, barely touching it. Her touch was warm, a little unsure. “Are you thrillified?”
Galinda giggled. “No, Elphie.” As Elphaba removed her hand, Galinda's face suddenly became very hot. It's a good thing blushing was not an eliminator in this game. Only the words, "I'm thrillified" would eliminate you.
Galinda took her hand, placed it on Elphaba's knee, and gently squeezed it. "Are you thrillified?"
Elphaba shook her head and smiled. "No."
They went back and forth a few times, always inching their hand closer and closer to where the leg met the hip. Neither had said the words that would end the game.
On Elphaba's fourth turn, she surprised Galinda with a question Galinda had never considered. "Can you only touch the other person's leg?"
Galinda sputtered but it came out as a half laugh.
"Sorry, that was a stupid question." Elphaba whispered.
Galinda grabbed both of Elphaba's hands in her own. "No, no! I'm sorry, it's not a stupid question, Elphie. I just..." The blonde shook her head, her curls bouncing as she laughed. "It's just, no one's ever lasted this long in a game with me."
She was aware of how arrogant it sounded, but it was true. Two to three hand placements was usually all it took for her friends to lose; their voices nearly went shrill as they confessed that they were, in fact, thrillified. Elphaba was constantly defying her expectations. Galinda had thought that within the first hand placement, her shy, introverted roommate would back out. She should've known that Elphaba would have a competitive side, as she saw in the weeks of their initial rivalry.
Still holding Elphaba's hands, she gave her answer. "Elphaba Thropp, you have my permission to touch other parts of my body." Galinda cleared her throat, recognizing that her words may have come out more suggestive than she had intended. She let go of Elphaba's hands so they could continue. "For the game." She clarified.
"You too." Elphaba said quietly. "You have permission."
“Your turn, Elphie.”
Elphaba hesitated a bit, hovering in the air before she seemed to steel herself. She leaned in, her hand cupping the back of Galinda’s neck, pulling the blonde a little closer. Her gaze drifted to Galinda’s lips, or was that another trick of the light? Either way, Galinda couldn’t help but feel delighted.
“Are you thrillified?”
“No.” Galinda whispered.
But Galinda felt a fluttery sensation in her chest, and her body felt as hot as the Impassable Desert. When she and Elphaba had first met, she attributed it to loathing and hatred. Now? She wasn't so sure.
Galinda leaned forward. Using the back of her hand, she touched Elphaba’s cheek and stroked downwards, before stopping to rest on Elphaba's cheek. Was it an illusion or did Elphaba lean into her touch? "Are you thrillified?"
"No." Was the only word that left her mouth.
Galinda retreated, but Elphaba didn’t waste time. With a surprising confidence, the brunette leaned forward cupping Galinda's chin and halting her retreat. Elphaba tilted it upwards towards her; her gaze locked to Galinda's. "Are you thrillified?" Her voice came out as a whisper, and it made Galinda's heart pound traitorously in her body.
Galinda's breath hitched, a puff of air nearly betraying her. "No." When Elphaba's hand left her chin, the temperature in the room suddenly dropped. Oh, so that's how it was going to be. Galinda thought. She needed to outdo Elphaba.
In the same motion, Galinda cupped Elphaba’s chin. “That’s the exact–” Elphie began to protest.
“Shhhhh.” Galinda whispered. Her thumb left her chin and began tracing Elphaba’s lips. They’re so soft. It was the first thought that crossed her mind as she allowed herself to stare. She remained on Elphaba’s lips for a moment longer before she met Elphaba’s gaze once more. “Are you thrillified?”
Elphaba’s breath rushed out and caressed her fingers, sending a thrill down her spine. “No.”
Galinda removed her hand from her lips and let out an impatient huff, although, simultaneously, she was extremely impressed.
What would cause Elphaba Thropp to let her guard down?
Elphaba smirked and raised an eyebrow. Galinda met her smugness with a high chin.
“I believe it’s your turn, Elphaba.”
Elphaba moved from her cross legged position to a kneeling one. She pulled Galinda closer to her with surprising strength and then stabilized herself with both arms on either side of Galinda. Galinda let out a surprised squeak but it soon died in her throat as Elphaba took her turn.
Elphaba had leaned forward as she had done last time, but this time, she used her lips to brush at the same spot right below Galinda’s ear. Galinda’s eyes closed and tilted to the side involuntarily. She could feel the hair on her neck stand up. Elphie’s words almost didn’t register.
“Are you thrillified?”
With Elphaba’s hot breath on her neck, she tilted her head even more. “Elphie, you-you have to say it looking into my eyes.” Her voice came out breathily. She couldn’t help it.
Elphaba chuckled. “With pleasure. But could you let go of my robe?”
Galinda’s eyes flew open and registered that she was, in fact, gripping Elphaba’s robe collar so tightly, Elphaba wouldn’t have been able to pull back. Galinda’s body shuddered, and a bit begrudgingly, she let go of Elphaba’s robe.
Elphaba’s eyes locked onto hers. “Were you thrillified?”
Galinda’s eyes narrowed. She didn’t even bother correcting the question. Galinda crossed her arms. “No.”
It was infuriating. Could nothing phase Elphaba Thropp? Suddenly, a wonderful idea crossed her mind. Surely, Elphaba would surrender.
Galinda scooted forward and gestured for Elphaba's legs to hang over the side of the bed. Elphaba obeyed as Galinda removed her robe. It would only make this next part difficult, or so she told herself. Galinda sat back down–on Elphaba's lap. Her legs straddled Elphaba on either side, her hands resting around Elphaba's neck. As she leaned her forehead against her friend’s, she felt Elphaba's hands rest of her hips, nearly crackling with heat. A stark contrast from the satin that felt cool against her skin. Elphaba's hands rested on her nightgown, her ring and little finger grazing Galinda's bare thigh. Her eyes met Elphaba's. From this height, Galinda had a slightly different point of view. The dark green around her eyes was nearly gone, replaced by black pupils. "Are you thrillified?" Her voice came out much lower than she was used to.
Elphaba took a moment to answer, her mouth dropped but said nothing. A moment later she let out a soft sigh and replied. "No."
Galinda would have been frustrated, annoyed even, but she didn't respond. As soon as her turn was over, Galinda paused. Finally, finally she could make out just how many freckles dotted her roommate's face. There were so many that she hadn't noticed before.
How long would it take me to count them?
She was brought back by Elphaba lightly stroking Galinda's hands with her thumb. Without realizing it, her hands had wandered to cup Elphaba’s face as she focused on her roommate's freckles. Galinda's body felt out of her control, a fact that should have scared her, but instead, it made her curious. Curious to see how else Elphaba could make her lose control.
"Galinda?"
“Hm?”
“Are you ready?” Elphaba asked gently.
“Oh, sorry.” She removed her hands from Elphaba’s face, placing them once more around Elphaba’s neck, but instead of resetting her body, Galinda stayed where she was. Every place where her body met Elphaba's, her body hummed with pleasure and heat. She wasn’t ready.
“Yes, I’m ready.”
She felt Elphaba's strong hands slide from her hips to her waist and then pull her closer so their chests nearly touched. Lips that had caressed her neck earlier, returned, and instead brushed against her jaw. Galinda gasped. She reveled in the sensations that overtook her as she moved her head so that Elphaba’s lips once again grazed the spot beneath her ear. She could have sworn she felt a small kiss, but it was so faint, she couldn’t tell if she was making it up. Galinda felt herself press closer so that there was no space between them. So close that she could feel Elphaba’s heart pound against her own chest. Like if she took her hand and placed it on Elphaba’s heart, she could leave her fingerprints.
Galinda supposed this was her own undoing; she had straddled her roommate after all.
"Are you thrillified?" Elphaba asked against Galinda’s skin. Her breath once again coaxing the hairs on Galinda’s neck and arms to stand up.
Galinda didn’t even remind Elphaba to say it while looking into her eyes. Actually, she said nothing.
Galinda said nothing because she didn't hear the question. She didn’t hear the question because this when Elphaba had pulled the blonde closer, Galinda’s legs had parted and settled so that she was sitting flush against Elphaba’s thigh. The need for pressure and friction screamed and thrashed throughout her entire being, causing her hips and chest to tilt involuntarily and her head to tip back. There was a barely suppressed moan at the base of her throat.
Elphaba's head leaned in tilting upwards. Her hands pressed Galinda into her with slightly more force, causing Galinda to shift against her thigh and release a soft moan. "Galinda, are you-"
She didn't finish her question, because at the sound of her name on Elphaba's lips, Galinda's will broke. She crashed her lips to Elphaba's, cutting her off. She felt Elphaba tense for a moment, and then felt her friend breathe in and relax into it.
As Galinda’s breath ran out, she tried to pull back, but Elphaba’s lips chased her own. When they met again, Elphaba’s head tilted to the side, allowing the kiss to deepen. Galinda grabbed Elphaba’s collar again but moved her hands to remove it. As Elphaba’s robe fell away, Galinda adjusted her legs so that she moved against Elphaba's thigh. The friction was just what she craved, and she let out another moan. The second time she moved against Elphaba's thigh, she heard Elphaba’s spell book thump to the floor.
At the sound, Elphaba separated herself from Galinda. They said nothing but let their foreheads rest against each other. For a few moments, the only sound was their mingled, ragged breaths.
Elphaba recovered first. Her lips inched closer again to Galinda’s, when a thought suddenly danced across Galinda’s mind. She jerked back, only staying put because Elphaba’s hands were still splayed across her back. “Oz! Was that your first and second kiss, Elphie?!”
Elphaba didn’t respond, only leaned forward until her face rested near Galinda’s heart and her arms wrapped around Galinda’s middle. She almost didn’t hear her friend’s question.
“Was it good?”
Galinda’s sing-song giggle echoed through their room. “Shiz, Elphie. Good?”
Elphaba’s head lifted but avoided her gaze. Galinda reached behind her and pulled Elphaba’s hand to rest against where her head had been. “Feel.”
Elphaba’s eyes closed as she put her hand against Galinda’s chest. She must have felt Galinda’s heart beating wildly because her face broke out into a grin and her cheeks turned a dark emerald.
So that’s what a blushing Elphie looked like.
The sight recalled the memory of their first morning as friends, when she’d placed the flower Fiyero had given her into Elphaba’s hair.
It looked better on her. Galinda had thought.
Elphaba Thropp was beautiful, and Galinda was smitten. She couldn’t deny that any longer. At some point in her loathing, she had gained an admiration for this person. Elphaba Thropp was smart, witty, talented, fiercely protective, and yes, beautiful.
Galinda leaned forward, this time brushing Elphaba’s lips with her own. She felt more than heard Elphaba sigh against her lips. Elphaba pulled back ever so slightly. “So, were you thrillified? You never answered.”
Galinda tipped back to see Elphaba smirking, but as quickly as it had come, her smirk vanished. Galinda pulled her lips into a thin line.
For a moment, she wanted to keep up the pretense. But there was an insecurity in Elphaba’s eyes that she could tell was beneath Elphaba’s feigned confidence. It was the same energy she sensed that night at the Ozdust.
Just like that night, Galinda wanted to give Elphaba what she asked for. Galinda decided to connect.
Galinda leaned forward pressing her lips to Elphaba’s once more. Elphaba moved slowly against her but picked up the pace when Galinda ran her tongue along Elphaba’s lips.
A few blissful moments later, Galinda pulled back. Seeing Elphaba’s eyes still closed, she waited until dark green met her own.
“Yes, Elphie, I’m thrillified.”
