Work Text:
It was just past one in the morning when Mina heard the faint sound of the doorknob jingle. The doorknob rattles frantically as someone tries to open the locked door. Finally, she hears the lock turn and the door flies open.
She saw Jihyo’s slim figure from the dim light of the television. Mina noticed that she looked fairly dishevelled, her hair was plastered to her face and her jacket was hanging off her shoulder. She threw the keys that were in her hands on the side table, still not noticing Mina sitting on the couch watching her. Her movements were very slow and sluggish as she turned to close the door behind. Jihyo stood in front of the door for a moment before she drunkenly swayed around. Finally, she noticed Mina, she doesn’t say anything and starts walking towards the kitchen.
“Jihyo, it’s really late” Mina quietly perks up as her eyes follow Jihyo.
“And what about it..” Jihyo slurs as she shoots her head aimlessly in Mina’s direction. Mina was taken aback by her blunt response; she would never have responded that way sober. Mina notices that Jihyo had forgotten to lock the door. So, she pushes off from the couch and heads towards the door.
“Were you drinking? How much did you have to drink?” Mina asks her, trying to see how much Jihyo had indulged in tonight.
“Are you my mother now?” Jihyo raises her voice.
“Can I not have a drink?” She continues, as she flails her arms in the air as she stumbles into the kitchen.
“Sorry for being concerned” Mina snaps back, offended by Jihyo’s drunken tone.
Mina re-locks the door and follows Jihyo to the kitchen. Nights like these had been happening more and more often. Jihyo would come back to the dorm in the middle of the night, wasted off her ass. It started with her just going out and enjoying a few drinks, but it’s gotten to the point where she is coming home full-blown drunk. Mina is honestly surprised that she manages to find her way home even with all that alcohol in her system. Mina is just glad that she makes it home safely. She’s told Jihyo multiple times to call her whenever she needs to get home, but she continuously ignores her help. Mina is growing concerned with Jihyo’s newfound habit, it’s only going to lead to more problems down the road. But she doesn’t know if she should talk or even bring it up around Jihyo because it might cause the problem to become bigger.
As she approaches the kitchen, Mina hears the all too familiar sound of a shot glass slamming onto the counter, followed by the sound of liquid being poured.
Mina walks into the kitchen to see Jihyo pouring a bottle of vodka into the small shot glass. Her heart sinks at the sight, she knew this wasn’t a good idea.
“Are you sure you need another drink, I think you’ve had enough for the night” Mina suggests trying to keep her from getting drunker than she already was.
“What do you care? Just leave me alone!” Jihyo shouts as she slams the bottle down. She picks up the glass and brings it up to her mouth before shooting it back. The alcohol burns as it goes down her throat causing her to scrunch her face in discomfort.
“Believe it or not, it’s because I’m your friend and I don’t like seeing you like this” Mina tells her as she watches the older girl pick up the bottle and pour another shot.
Jihyo grabs the glass and starts to raise it up to her mouth.
“Jihyo… let’s get you t-” Mina pleads as she walks closer, trying to grab the glass out of Jihyo’s hand.
In response Jihyo pulls her arm into her chest to keep Mina from taking it away.
“I said leave me alone!” Jihyo shouts in anger, why wouldn’t Mina let her drink. This had nothing to do with her.
The small amount of liquid that was in the glass spills onto the floor and over Jihyo’s jacket.
“Great! Looook at what you-- made me do” Jihyo snapped, furrowing her brow at the wasted alcohol on the floor.
Mina took a step back, afraid of the anger in Jihyo’s tone. She had never spoken to Mina like this before. She was always kind and gentle when talking to Mina but it’s like a flip had been switched. She was like a different person tonight.
“I’m just trying to help” Mina says meekly, feeling very small after Jihyo’s outburst.
“I don't need your fu—cking.. help, I don't need anybody’s.. fucking help” Jihyo slurs as she jerks her head towards Mina and glares at her.
“Jih-..” Mina starts, trying to avoid Jihyo’s hateful stare. But Jihyo loudly interrupts her.
“Every one needs-.. to mind their own business and get a fucking life and-… and leave mine alone” Jihyo curses as she fumbles onto the edge of the counter, catching herself before she falls.
“Were just worried about you, you’ve been drinking.. a lot more recently” Mina raises her brow in concern as she watches Jihyo struggle to keep her balance. Mina feels a small sense of pity for the woman, she is so gone she can barely stand.
“So your.. keeping tabs on me, like I’m a child” Jihyo blurts out, offended that Mina is treating her like a child who has to be watched all the time.
“Well I-I”m not, all I do is work and when.. I want to let off a little steam with some drinkss it’s a fucking problem” Jihyo erupts.
“Well it’s a problem when it starts affecting your work and your life” Mina shouts back, getting angry at Jihyo’s drunken attitude.
“Really!” Jihyo laughs with a mocking tone.
“That’s bold. It has..n’t affected my work at all. Ha, I’m the onlyyy person here who ever does anything, who puts in the fucking work.” Jihyo roars. There’s a pause as if Jihyo is thinking about what to say next.
“What do you even do for this group?? Huh??” Jihyo seethed, there was malice in her voice, she meant for that to hurt Mina.
Mina shoots her head up at Jihyo, her face slowly dropping at what Jihyo was saying.
“Thats right fucking nothing” Jihyo fumes as she grabs the bottle of vodka and starts to pour another drink.
Mina can feel the tears pricking behind her eyes. Her face was starting to warm up as her mouth turned into a pout, trying to keep the tears from falling at the hurtful things Jihyo was saying to her.
“I pick up the slack every fucking time.. for all of you!” Jihyo bellows as she points her finger around the room at an imaginary audience. She picks up the newly poured glass and swiftly chucks the alcohol back.
Mina’s lip quivers and she can no longer hold back her tears. A tear falls down her cheek and she is quick to wipe it away before Jihyo could see.
“I don't like you when your drunk.. you-.. you say things that I really hope you don't actually mean” she says quietly as her voice breaks. More tears fall down her face as she finishes her sentence.
“Put yourself to bed” Mina quivers with stuttered breaths.
Jihyo lets out a laboured sigh as she watches Mina briskly turn around and leave the kitchen.
“Fine, run off like you always do!” Jihyo shouts as Mina makes her way down the hall. The last thing Jihyo hears is a door slam shut.
Jihyo is left alone, drunk in the kitchen. The silence is deafening.
She looks down at the empty glass in her hand as a small tear rolls over her rosy cheek.
Why does she always do this. Why can’t she stop ruining everything good in her life. She doesn’t want too she just doesn’t know any way to make it better.
