Work Text:
The sky above the park that Adam had picked for their outing was still cloudy, Earth’s winter air was biting at Adam’s cheeks as they trudged through the fresh morning snow, boots sinking with a satisfying crunch. The commander breathed in the fresh and crisp air, it was less cold than he remembered it, he blamed it on global warming (still not his problem, though). He looked at his right where Lute was all bundled up but he could still see her lashes dotted with tiny sprinkles of frost. Adorable.
“Earth is colder than I expected.”
Lute said beside him, wrapping her gloved hands around a steaming cup of cocoa they had bought at a nearby Christmas market, Adam had suggested that they’d get mulled wine, but the Lieutenant had decided against it, she didn’t want their outing to go awry because they had decided to indulge in the delicacy.
“But it’s… nice. Calm.”
Adam smirked. “Calm? Really? Give it ten seconds.” Lute blinked. “Ten seconds until wha-?”
The words died in her mouth as she felt something hit her shoulder, making her drop the human delicacy they had procured earlier.
She stared down at the cocoa that was now staining the snow, then turned her gaze towards Adam, who was very obviously pretending to admire the trees, whistling and with his hands behind his back.
“...You should know better than to start something you won’t be able to finish.” She said, voice flat, Adam suddenly realising exactly what he had started.
Still, he played it cool, turning around with an innocent expression, she looked down right delicious.
“What? Little old me?” He pointed at himself, taking just one step back in an attempt to put some distance between them. “You must be seeing things, Dangertits. Are you sure that your hot cocoa didn’t have anything in it?”
Lute shot him a look that made him grateful for the fact that the coat that he was wearing was large enough to hide the tent that was forming in his pants.
“Very well. If that’s how this is going to be…”
Her voice was down right lethal, he had heard her using that tone with particularly stubborn recruits and it always made his blood drop right in his pants. She bent down, gathering some snow and making a perfectly round snow ball. Adam knew that it was game over from the minute she dropped the paper cup onto the snow.Adam’s eyes widened, oh he was fucked, that snowball looked like it was going to hurt once it was going to hit him.
“Lute, come on, let’s talk about this!”
He tried to reason, backtracking until the back of his legs hit the seat of a nearby bench.Too late.
The first snowball got him right on the chest. The second one that was also thrown with the precision of a sniper, flew past his ear in what she would have deemed a warning shot. Her third almost hit him square in the face. That would have been bad.
“Okay! Okay! Truce!” Adam laughed as he dove behind the bench he had encountered earlier.
“Denied.” Lute called sweetly, gathering snow with alarming efficiency, for someone who had never experienced the snow, she was weirdly in her element.
“I told you not to start something you won’t be able to finish or win.” Her grin was positively feral and Adam wished he had taken a picture.
The attack that followed their exchange was surprisingly tactical. Adam jumped out from his cover behind the bench, flinging a snowball back at her. One got Lute on her scarf, another one exploded on her boots and the last one knocked one of her snowballs right off her hand as she was about to throw it. She gasped dramatically, wiping the wet glove on her coat.
“That was not a fair shot, Adam!”
“Are you surrendering?”
Lute narrowed her eyes. Mischief sparked in those golden irises he loved so much. A little tiny voice urged him that it might have been a trap, but he chose not to listen. “I am, you win.”
She raised both hands, admitting her defeat, her expression now one of a kicked puppy, oh, if only he knew.
Adam walked towards her, this was way too easy, he should have known better in retrospect, but he had been so caught up in the moment that thinking back, he didn’t really care about what happened next. As he bent over to press his lips to hers he felt something cold slide down his chest.
“YOU FUCKING BITCH!” He screamed, not caring about the stares that the people were giving them, he started shivering trying to get the ball out of his shirt, needlessly.
“I win.” Her laugh was better than any song he had ever heard or composed, his favourite sound in the whole wide world, Heaven paled in her light.
But most importantly, her guard was down and he could catch her unprepared.
He pounced as she was fixing her beanie and coat, making them fall both in the soft snow, his hand on the back of her head to protect it during the fall.
“You truly are the most beautiful angel I have ever laid eyes upon.” He pressed a soft kiss to her lips, admiring the faint hint of a blush that was starting to tint her cheeks of that lovely golden colour he adored, she would blame it on the cold air, but they both knew that it wasn’t true.
The snow had started to fall again around them, he got up, laying beside her with a soft smile. He didn’t really mind the cold as long as he had her by his side.
Lute gently took his hand in hers, interlocking their fingers together as she watched the snowflakes fall and listened to the children and families having fun around them.
“Earth is…surprisingly fun.” The exorcist whispered, as if talking too loudly would spoil the moment and burst their little bubble. She was grateful for those moments where they could just…be. Where they didn’t have to think about the incumbent sinner threat or the extermination.
“I told you, and I am always right.” Adam whispered, lazily tracing the back of her hand with his thumb. He didn't need to look to know that she was now blushing even harder.
“This has been one of my favourite dates of ours. Look...” The blonde pointed at the sky, showing him a tear in the clouds where some stars were starting to peek through.
“Yeah,” Adam said, but he was looking at her.
Lute nudged him with her elbow. “You’re staring again.”
“Just appreciating the view.” He replied, finally tearing his eyes away from her face and pointing them to the sky and the stars that were shining.
She smiled, warm enough to melt every snowflake around them. “Next time,” she said, “I am going to win. You'll see. You won't know what hit you.”
Adam grinned, turning to press another kiss to her lips. “Sure, 'tits, sure.”
