Chapter 1: Chapter One

Chapter Text

His entire musical performance had astonished even the toughest character among his fellow students in the library.

But not everyone.

Fiyero observed the delightful Galinda next to him and then glanced at the others. His gaze swept the room in search of a notable pair of eyes that appeared to be like anyone else's.

He left the library, realizing she must have gone outside.

He eventually saw her on a bench, a book open on her lap. He remained there for a short while, absorbing the scenery. She appeared so calm and gentle, unlike the moments she spent in his presence.

He shook himself mentally. What was he doing? What was wrong with him? He wasn't sure why, but he realized he couldn't look away from her. It felt as though his eyes were moving independently. Before he could identify his actions, he discovered he was approaching her.

Elphaba was so engrossed in her studying that she didn't realize Fiyero was now standing in front of her.

"What were you reading?" He inquired of her, folding his arms as though he was unsure how to stand.

"Fiyero?!" The sound of his voice surprised her.

"Don't say it was something shocking?"

He asked her, unable to hide the teasing tone in his voice.

She shut the book and got to her feet. His invasiveness knew no limits.

"I don't believe it's something you should worry about." He shoved his hands into his pockets, making a strong effort to avoid smiling at her.

"Well..." He began to speak, unsure of what to say next.

"Well?!" She echoed back, awaiting his answer.

"You seemed so engaged in studying that I wondered if you were reading something, perhaps, unsuitable." He clarified, letting his eyes purposefully meet hers.

"Mind your own business."
She replied with a bit of a sharp tone in her voice. Her response made him want to giggle like a teenage boy, but he suppressed it, knowing she wouldn't approve of it.

"Sure, I will remember that." He commented in an indifferent tone. It was almost as if he was disregarding her comments. Elphaba exhaled in frustration.

"Additionally, I hope we didn't make too much noise to bother you at all." She expressed disbelief at his remark. If a person were to interrupt their discussion, he/she would be shocked.

"I—I was referring to the singing, naturally." He hurried to clarify, making it even more problematic.

"Trust me, your performance left me completely uninterested, to put it mildly." She expressed a revulsion she had not thought she could convey.

"Is that true?" He inquired, releasing a stifled laugh.

She couldn't comprehend his actions.

"Indeed, it is!"

"Did I do well?" He inquired.

"What did you say?!"

"The performance, I mean." He mentioned it prior to clearing his throat.

"For someone who believes that everything is significant, you shouldn't have taken the effort to share your perspective." She replied, providing him with a truthful response.

"Oh my gosh, you really struggle with lying, don't you?" He commented, causing her to feel uneasy.
