Work Text:

Dani was pretty sure this was the only and last time she had wished she had listened to her partner. Hightide was a war veteran turned rescuer, he still had weapons and even without was capable of defending himself. Blades, on the other hand? Besides a sonic roar and claws of his Dino mode she wasn’t sure Blades had any he was willing to use. Medical tools built in his body, but he’d never use them for anything beyond their intended purpose.

Was that the reason he died? A sworn oath to heal to injured? The inexperience of fighting? Did it matter now to answer that question as neon blue stains the ground beneath her? Head connected to his spine which had been ripped out by a still bloodthirsty Cybertronian rested nearby as its paint faded. She sat in the cockpit looking down at the shattered glass that had protected her from a fatal blow.

Slowly she got up and out of the now dead cybertronian’s body. It was a weird feeling, even stranger when she first learned that Blades was alive, a real alien robot who felt fear, pain, joy, and had been the best friend she could have asked for. Across the field she could see the recruits looking on in horror. They weren’t supposed to be here, they shouldn’t see something as gruesome as this. They shouldn’t be seeing still sparking wires where neck connected in a body. Shouldn’t see the energon leaking from cracked glass or how it gushed out of a hole at the base of his neck.

She made her way over there, Medix of course checked her for injuries but she could tell he was shaken. His mentor had been the first to respond and reach them, the first to put himself in the path of danger. Whirl was watching as Quickshadow and Blurr took care of their attacker, quickly subduing them. The young femme was trying to look anywhere except the body, and Dani wished to give her comfort.

A ground bridge opened up behind them as Chase and Heatwave stepped through. Chase immediately went over to Quickshadow and Blurr who had things under control. Heatwave ushers the recruits back to the ground bridge, knowing they’d need to be back at the academy to deal with the death of one of their professors. A scolding for them being out there wouldn’t do much good, they had already seen the consequences of that.

Chase called in Bumblebee and Grimlock to deal with the now stasis cuffed Cybertronian so he could deal with Blades’ body. It had already lost its color, bright orange and pale white into dull rusted grey. As he walked closer he grimaced at sight, his brother who he’d told his carrier he’d always protect with his life was a guilt that would eat away at him for the rest of his life. He hadn’t gotten there in time, if the distress call had come in sooner he could’ve save his brother. He could see Dani walking up to him in the corner of his vision. Hand gently patting his leg like the Chief did sometimes.

It wasn’t for his comfort however, he could see tears forming on her face. With the recruits safe at the academy she allowed herself to grieve. He heard Quickshadow and Blurr approaching. Paying respects to Blades in their own ways. Each of them having come to be on better terms with the flyer in the past couple of years. Blurr knelt down beside Dani and spoke to her, at least Chase thought so. Emotions weren’t his area of strength so they had a habit of getting to him without him noticing. He couldn’t hear anything, couldn’t focus on anything but the body before him.

Chase barely noticed Hightide’s arrival until the sailor started to move Blades’ body through a ground bridge back to Griffin Rock. Quickshadow following behind with the head. He also got up and headed back through. The firehouse usually held a welcoming presence for him but now it felt as cold and hollow. Chief and Kade were already there talking with Dani. Graham and Boulder showing up a few minutes after.

At the academy questions filled the halls as Heatwave tries to assure the recruits that Blades’ death wasn’t their fault, it was the Cybertronian that attacked. Medix who was used to thinking with more logic than emotion, felt off compared to how he saw his feelow recruits openly display their feelings. He had just lost his mentor and the only thing his processor was processing is that he’d need a new mentor. Why was his processor acting like Blades wasn’t important? He and the other recruits were given as much time as they needed, no classes, no tests, and unfortunately no rescues.

However with no distractions meant they were forced to take everything in as their mentors ready things. Ratchet took over as a temporary medical officer until Medix completed his training. Knockout, apparently a former decepticon like Wedge offered to be his new mentor. While Medix appreciated the doctor’s skills and knowledge he was no Blades. It felt off to Medix, to not hear Blades’ kind voice offering him advice or pushing him to improve. To not see him helping the other recruits with their issues. To feel a sudden pressure to graduate sooner, to fill a very important role. The Rescue Bots needed him as a medic, Cybertron needed him, Earth needed him. His own processor ran in so many loops of logical pains he hardly noticed himself walking towards Professor Chase’s dim office.

Chase heard his office door open and the sounding pedsteps inside clued him in as Medix.< /p>

“Medix? Do you need something?”

“Yes Professor, some of the human books Cody brought us about grief advised talking about it, and since you were the closest to Blades I feel you’d understand what im feeling even if I do not.”

“I see, if you want you may share and I will do what I can to help.” Chase offers and both bots discuss the loss of someone they both had a close connection with. Chase a brother, and Medix a mentor.
