Work Header

don’t leave (please stay)

Summary:

Four is stubborn and difficult and not good at feelings. Good thing Two isn’t good at them, either!

Notes:

at first I was worried about mischaracterizing them but then I remember I can do and write whatever I want

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The kitchen was very quiet today: probably because X wasn’t there. He was away at the Pillary Ruins with the BFBers, which left Four working completely alone.

Four picked up another dirty plate from the sink and nearly threw up; the plate was covered in wet food. No matter how long he works in the kitchen, he will never touch those dishes. Which is why he immediately dropped the dish in the sink and wiped his hands, leaving several dishes still unwashed and untouched.

That’s enough for today.

He teleported to his room and fell down onto his bed.

“Four?”

Oh No.

Four groaned, muffled by the blanket. Two was in his room, he could tell by that stupid, annoying, and unlikable voice.

Both of them spoke at the same time.

“Four, what are you doing in my room?”

“Get out of my room.”

Four slowly picked his head up to glare at Two, who was staring at him with furrowed eyebrows, like they were confused or something.

“This is my room.” Four stated.

Two blinked. Blinked again. They turned their head left and right, taking in their surrounding “This is your room?”

(Admittedly, the room was very colorful, which isn’t a stylistic choice Four would make personally.)

Four scrutinized their expression and tone of voice, and deduced that Two was mocking him. So he must, of course, express his anger and resentment.

Four glared. And glared some more.

“…Can you stop growling at me?” Two was avoiding all eye contact, which Four took as them being intimidated.

“No.”

Two frowned “Can you… get out of my room?”

“No.”

Two groaned and pinched the bridge of their nose “Don’t tell me you’re gonna stay in my room.

Four kept glaring at Two “I’m gonna stay in your room.”

Two glared at Four this time “You can’t be serious.”

“When have I ever not been serious?” Four rested his head on his palms. Two was getting offensive now, because Four is always very serious.

Two rolled their eyes “I’m about to go to bed. You can’t stay here.”

“You have to leave, Four.”

Four stared at Two.

“Are you just gonna sit there and not say anything? You do know I’m gonna lay down in that bed, right?”

Four rolled over onto his back to spread his arms and legs out like a starfish.

Two sighed in defeat. Four smirked. But his victory and pride didn’t last long, for he felt a dip in the bed. He turned his head to see Two, with their right knee already putting pressure on the mattress.

“Are you going to move?”

Two sounded annoyed, so of course, Four instigated “no.”

Two definitely deserved that. Now they’d have to find somewhere else to slee—

Four gets forcefully rolled over onto his stomach to the side of the bed. He looked up to see Two was already pulling the blanket back.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m going to sleep. This is my bed.” Two replied, looking at Four like he was the stupidest person in the world all while getting comfortable under the blanket. “Are you gonna stay here or leave?”

“I mean, surely you don’t want to be anywhere near me, right?” Two’s tone went from sounding utterly pissed off to confused.

Four wanted to speak so badly, and he really did want to express his hatred for Two and leave, but he couldn’t. Because he didn’t… he didn’t… he didn’t want to leave. Then, he’d be all alone. Plus, he kinda liked making Two upset.

Four and Two both turn their heads away at the same time. Both of them were embarrassed, and Two even muttered a quiet “oh my gosh..”

Before anything even more awkward and weird could happen, Two turned in bed so their back was facing Four.

Four huffed and rolled his eyes. Whatever.

He got under the blanket and turned his back, as well.

He wanted to sleep, but his face was still uncomfortably warm from the knowledge that he was laying in the same bed as Two. He hated this. Why’d he do this? He chose to be here. He hated the tension. He needed to fix this, so he’ll do it in the only way he knows how.

He turned his head toward Two “..Two.”

“What?”

“Who’s your favorite contestant?”

Two was quiet for a moment before they seemingly snapped back into reality “Oh! Well, I mean, it’s gotta be Gaty. She’s honestly just a great team player and she’s always—“

“No one asked.” Four was smiling.

“You— you just—“ Two gave up. They must’ve realized they couldn’t beat Four. Ever. “Yeah.”

“Wanna know my favorite contestant?”

Two sighed “..Sure.”

Four turned his full body towards Two, now. “Pencil is my favorite.”

“That’s nice, Four. You know, I don’t really know Pencil so—“

“Ask me why she’s my favorite.”

Two frowned. They looked down at Four, meeting his very serious and stoic expression, and their face softened. Two was so weird. Why did seeing Four’s intimidating face make them look nicer?

“Why is Pencil your favorite?”

And Four didn’t stop talking for the rest of the night. He kept talking about BFDI and other interests, like Inanimate Insanity, other competition shows, and he even managed to sprinkle a little bit of math in there. He kept talking, and his talks were accompanied by small sounds of agreement from Two every now and then.

In that moment, he forgot who he was talking to. He was talking to his rival, but it was hard to remember why they were on that status, when Two was so quiet, so interested, so… comforting.

To be honest, Two didn’t mind Four cutting them off almost everytime they spoke too much. For one, Two was spent, given they had wasted all their energy of the day socializing with the contestants.

And two, Four was very endearing when he talked about his special interests. Every so often, Four would stop and scan Two’s facial expression to make sure they were paying attention.

It went like that for half an hour or so before Four quieted down; his words slowed and slurred together, and he opened his mouth for a big yawn.

“…Two.”

Two hummed in response.

“I’m gonna sleep.”

“Oh, uh, okay! Not sure why you needed to tell me that but— sure, go ahead.”

Two got nervous when they felt Fours eyes on them. They were nervous: that’s why their face got so hot.

Four looked down at the mattress and looked at Two again “Can I sleep here? With— with you?”

Two wasnt expecting that. Four was already here, and he clearly didn’t care what Two thought before, so why now?

At first, Two wanted Four out of their room. Of course they did. Four didn’t like Two, and what good was it having someone who didn’t like you in your bedroom?

But it’s only been half an hour since then, and Two didn’t mind Four’s company… they liked listening to Four talk about his favorite things, they liked looking at him, and they liked being close to him, too.

Four did that one specific frustrated groan— Two remembers it from somewhere, a long time ago, but they weren’t sure from where— he sat up.

“Forget it! I’ll just go to my own room. You clearly don’t want me here.” He said that last part quietly— hesitantly? Almost?

Right as Four was about to flip his legs over the bed and onto the floor, Two grabbed him by the wrist. He went still at the contact.

“You can stay here, Four.”

Four stayed still for a moment, then slowly turned his head to look at Two. His face was hot, and Two could basically feel the warmth from where they were propped on their elbow on the bed. They smiled. Four really was so cute!

As if he hadn’t just been so shocked and nervous, his eyebrows furrowed and he put on an angry facade again. He made some sound of discontent as he laid back down in bed.

“I don’t like you, Two.”

Two let their head hit their pillow, putting them at eye level with Four. They raised their eyebrow.

“Yet you’re still here.”

Before Two could notice Four’s face get any hotter, their leg was kicked under the blanket.

“—OW! What the— why’d you do that?” Two was not smirking anymore.

“You’re too smug.”

“But am I wrong? You asked to stay here with me of all people.” Two lilted, and their cheeky smile was back “Clearly you like me more than you let on.”

“You—“

“Do you have something to tell me, Four?”

Silence. Four was speechless.

He turned on his side so he was no longer facing Two “I’m going to sleep.”

Two chuckled under their breath “Awh, don’t be like that, Four. You wanted to sleep with me, didn’t you?”

“You’re making it sound weird! I did not want to “sleep with you!” I just… I…” Four groans again “I need company.”

They blinked “…That’s it? That’s the only reason you wanted to sleep in my bed? With me?”

“Of course it is. You’re the only person in this hotel that actually likes me enough to let me do this.”

“Oh.” They weren’t disappointed, they just weren’t expecting it. “I just— I thought…”

Four turned to lay on his back, looking to the side where Two was. He was waiting for Two to talk.

“So you really don’t like me?” Two’s face flushed “I mean— not like that! I just thought you didn’t… y’know, hate me? I— actually, no, I’m sorry for assuming things. That’s really on me. Uhm— wow, this is weird. I don’t mean to make you uncomfortable or anything i was just messing around—“

Four was fucked. Oh, he was totally fucked. He actually felt bad. Two wasn’t trying to be mean to him: he misread the situation. It was his fault. He already said he didn’t like Two, and now he finds out Two wanted him to like them. Wow. Wowowowowowowow. He just ruined his shot. How is he gonna come back from this without looking like an idiot? Or just coming off as insincere?

“…I don’t hate you.”

“But you dislike me.”

Words were so hard. How could Four ever tell Two what he actually felt? He knew if he tried, the words would never leave his mouth.

“No. I don’t dislike you.”

“…But you said—“

Four wrapped his arms around Two’s sides, moving himself closer, so his chest was flush against theirs. He really hoped this got his message across. This was embarrassing. Was this even appropriate?

Two was stiff. Oh, he made them uncomfortable, didn’t he? He pulled his arms back “Sorry— that wasn’t—“

He gasped before he could finish speaking, due to the fact Two pulled him back in with their hands on his waist and upper back. They were smiling like they just understood how to solve for slope.

“You scared me, Four!” A light, relieved chuckle accompanied their words.

Four’s face was so hot. Did he have a fever? Was he sick? Why is his face so warm recently?

“…Sorry. I didn’t know what to say.” He muttered. Two smiled at him.

They rested their forehead on his, blinking slowly. “Oh, don’t worry about it. It was just confusing is all— wait, so you do like me, right?” Two pulled their head back “Oh gosh, don’t tell me I just—“

Four hit their arm (what he thought was) lightly. Two stopped speaking; so that got the job done.

“You’re stupid, Two. I wouldn’t have hugged you if I didn’t like you— ugh, I mean, you’re okay, Two. You’re okay.”

Two blinked at him. And blinked again— gosh why does Two keep blinking!?

“…Okay, Four. You keep saying that.” The gave a cheeky smile. Ugh, Four hated them. “…I think we should go to sleep now, yeah?”

Four yawned again.

Two chuckled “Right then. Goodnight, Four.”

Four wrapped his arms around Two’s torso. “Goodnight.”
