Whatever that means!, Hanbin thought as he closed Kakaotalk to browse Tiktok for a bit.
It was fully beyond him why Jeonghyeon would possibly choose to invite him to some weirdly fancy restaurant (it really was expensive!!) on a random Thursday.
He had actually wanted to accompany his favourite dongsaeng at the cinema, but Jeonghyeon had declined for both of them before Hanbin had gotten a chance to respond.
All of a sudden? What's up with him?
The idol pushed aside his confusion for the time being; overthinking the situation wouldn't help him anyway.
When Yunseo entered his room two hours later, pouting at him as he asked Hanbin why he hated him and refused to spend time with him, all he could do was shrug.
"Honestly, I don't really know either. I guess it's important to him. Seriously, have you ever seen that guy make a RESERVATION? Like, for anything?"
Yunseo just laughed, shaking his head.
"He told me to dress nicely, too. Who does he think he is? I'll dress however I want to!"
His friend's left eyebrow shot up, and he tilted his head at Hanbin: "Hyung, we both know you'll listen to him…"
"Yah! Did you come here just to attack me? Go bother someone else."
Of course, Yunseo stayed. He even sat down right next to his group member on the bed, pulled out his phone and opened Tiktok as well. There was a reason the two of them were close. Not just physically.
The next day, Hanbin found himself changing into different clothes no less than four times.
Embarrassing.
Still, changing four times was better than changing five times, or, god forbid, looking mediocre at his mystery dinner with Jeonghyeon.
Speaking of which, Hanbin had no idea what the other could possibly be plotting, and it was driving him crazy.
Usually, Jeonghyeon was a simple person. He was easily entertained, he listened to instructions well, and if you gifted him anything green, he got a lot more excited than warranted by the situation. It was cute.
Maybe he should go pick up a small gift on the way.
Hanbin liked Jeonghyeon. How could he not?
His crush seemed a little intimidating if you didn't know him very well. He worked extremely hard and had those sharp facial features that could make him seem somewhat unapproachable.
However, Hanbin had come to learn that Jeonghyeon was a huge nerd who spent too much time solving Rubik's cubes and watching youtube videos on how to solve them faster. He was quite the sweetheart, too, friendly with everyone who dared to start a conversation with him.
Eventually, Hanbin got paired with him and two other trainees for a new routine. It allowed him to discover the softer sides of Jeonghyeon. When he noticed one of the two younger trainees struggling, he would offer his help and patiently repeat the same line or movement over and over with them.
More surprisingly, he was unafraid to ask Hanbin questions. He would pull the cutest confused face in the mirror, turn to Hanbin and go: "Hanbini, what am I doing wrong? This is so confusing."
There was a determination and perfectionism to him that felt magnetic to the other idol.
And then, of course, Jeonghyeon was otherworldly. He was the kind of beautiful that made you wonder how in the world it was even fair to everyone else for someone that gorgeous to exist.
Many years ago, it had caught Hanbin off guard so badly that he had forgotten the next set of steps to a choreography he could have otherwise danced in his sleep.
With time, he had become more used to it. Not immune, that was nothing short of impossible, but… the striking features were less distracting. Always just as stunning, but Hanbin managed to function more easily around him.
Well, lately it had been harder again. Jeonghyeon's insultingly pretty face was not to blame, though; it was something else. Something way worse.
A change in his behaviour.
As if Hanbin's life wasn't fucking hard enough already, considering he had a crush on his friend that he happened to work with just about every single day, said friend had decided to turn up the fanservice the past couple months.
So not only was Jeonghyeon ethereally beautiful, he also found every excuse in the book to be near Hanbin, touch him in some way and make him flustered. Everything about it complicated his daily life.
Hanbin fixed his hair for what seemed like the millionth time that day, gave his outfit a final once-over and left the dorm.
On his way to the restaurant, a small store caught his attention. They seemed to sell all kinds of little gifts, which was precisely what Hanbin needed.
After some browsing, he discovered the perfect gift for Jeonghyeon: A green cat-shaped (in the most goofy way) key chain. It must have been Hanbin's lucky day as the cat-chain was fairly inexpensive, too.
Pleased, he continued his walk, and at exactly 16:55, he found himself at the address his friend had sent him. He scanned his surroundings for the guy, but to no avail.
Hanbin pulled out his phone to update Yunseo about the key chain he had bought and complain to him about the windy weather as well as Jeonghyeon's absence.
He took in the scenery, double-checked if he had the correct time and place, cursed men in his mind. Call him old-fashioned or impatient, possibly both, but Hanbin couldn't stand it when people were late.
Just as his patience started running thin and he was about to feel seriously vexed, he spotted a tall figure running towards him.
As Jeonghyeon came closer, the dancer noticed that his friend was holding something in his arms. It looked a lot like… Flowers?
"Hanbini, I am so sorry for making you wait. I really wanted to get you those camellias since you once said you like them, but I went to two different flower shops, and they didn't have any, so I kept searching until I found them, of course, but it took too long… Ah, I'm talking too much."
Jeonghyeon sighed.
"Please forgive me for being so reckless. I promise I had good intentions…"
Usually, Hanbin would roll his eyes and tell the other person that their actions should match their words, just plan better next time. However, this was Jeonghyeon, giving him the world's most irresistible puppy eyes, explaining how he was on the hunt for some type of flower Hanbin didn't even remember ever mentioning to him.
And well, Jeonghyeon was his exception. In many ways.
"It's okay, you're not even that late. Come earlier next time, or I'll get mad for real, though."
His crush's eyes widened as he bent down into a 90° bow.
"Oh my god, thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Ah…", he had transferred the carefully crafted bouquet into just one hand and nervously scratched his neck with the other, "happy 100 days of course!".
100 days.
100 days…
100 days of WHAT??
Hanbin had no clue. All he knew was that he had to avoid hurting Jeonghyeon's feelings at all costs, which was why he decided to play along with it for the time being, hopefully he would figure out what they were celebrating soon.
Friendship? No. It had been years.
Graduation? Hanbin had to suppress his laugh.
Debut? Nothing made any sense.
"Oh! Thank you so much, Jjeong, you shouldn't haveee~"
The other's eyes lit up ever so slightly; Hanbin had spent enough time studying him to notice it. Good answer.
"Nonsense, Hanbini, I wanted to! What kind of person wouldn't get their boyfriend something for their anniversary?"
'Hanbini' felt as if he had just been electrocuted; his body refused to decide between burning hot and freezing cold sensations, his heart had suddenly become a runner trying to win a sprint. Blood was shooting up into his cheeks and ears.
The corners of Hanbin's lips, thankfully, lifted on their own as he lost control over his muscles for a moment.
It only happened very rarely, but the dancer was speechless.
Him. Hanbin. Overly sensitive. Dramatic as fuck. Too loud. Clingy.
Too much.
Lee Jeonghyeon. Down to earth. Patient. Stunning. Warmhearted. Popular.
Perfection in human shape.
DATING?????
This had to be a prank. There was no way Jeonghyeon had actually said that to him AND meant it like this.
Well, if this had been certain other members of his group, joking about dating each other would have been a plausible theory.
Not with Jeonghyeon, though. He was an honest person who meant things the way he voiced them.
Still, none of it made any sense. How was it apparently Hanbin's 100-day anniversary with the ethereal angel in front of him, and he had no idea about it?
"Is something wrong? Do you not like them? I can get you different ones!", his maybe-boyfriend cut in, concern evident in the tone of his sweet voice.
And well, Hanbin had always been weak to him, even though he would never outright admit to it.
"Nooo, no, no, no! Nothing is wrong at all. I'm sorry my reaction must have come off that way. It's just…", he trailed off, "I didn't expect it. Like, I'm really happy right now! I promise, I was just surprised. Thank you, they're beautiful."
Thankfully, that seemed to ease Jeonghyeon's worries as he smiled back at the other and asked if they should go in. As Jeonghyeon held the door open for him, Hanbin noticed how his ears had turned a shade pinker, too. Oh.
They got seated, and their androgynous looking waiter kindly brought out a vase for them to store the flowers in for the time being.
Hanbin flipped through the menu he had been handed, and ouh boy, what were those prices? Wasn't it such a great day to have some salad?
"I know that expression. C'mon, I'm paying anyway. Just get whatever you want."
Guess Hanbin was not the only one who had studied the other person. He sighed. Fine.
After they had politely placed their orders, Jeonghyeon looked at him. No, that word felt inaccurate. Jeonghyeon stared at him, unblinking.
"What's up?"
He tried to conceal the flustered nervousness that had settled in his gut.
"Just thinking…", his maybe-boyfriend replied casually.
Hanbin refused to let it go: "About?"
"It's stupid but… I don't know, I still can't believe you like me. You're light itself, you're elegance, you're way too beautiful. Feels surreal."
Now, he may only have been aware that he and Jeonghyeon were dating (???) for a solid 20 minutes at best; however, there was no way Hanbin would ever leave his apparently-boyfriend hanging or insecure about his feelings.
Yes, the situation was wildly absurd. Very much so.
It was simple, though. Hanbin liked Jeonghyeon. In fact, if he had knowingly been asked out, he would most likely have agreed. He might have been hesitant considering their status as idols, but, ultimately, he would have listened to his heart.
"Jjeong, don't be silly. Of course, I like you. You're the sweetest person ever, you work so hard, you're literally gorgeous. You can make me laugh. And you ground me.
When I scream, or cry, or I'm about to break down, there's you. Patiently standing there, holding me in your arms, calming the storms inside of me."
Hanbin could have gone on and on. Maybe another time.
Across from him, Jeonghyeon had frozen in place, his mouth dropped slightly open. He blinked once, then two more times.
Shortly after, the most blinding grin the other idol had ever been witness to appeared on his boyfriend's face.
"Oh, Hanbini…", then a pause. Instead of finishing his sentence, Jeonghyeon stared at him again, impossibly fond this time.
The unfiltered display of adoration threw Hanbin off; it was too real. Too unpolished.
As idols, they had traded the real and genuine for a shot at success and glamour - hoping to pursue their dreams for a long time to come. This exchange meant their lives became fake.
Fake smiles, fake pleasantries, fake connections with a multitude of people.
Jeonghyeon's affection wasn't fake. The light filling his eyes was real. So were the delicate tears forming in his dark, warm eyes.
"Yah! Don't cry, they're going to think I was mean to you." Hanbin protested, pouting to emphasise his point.
His boyfriend laughed, and an angel gained its wings.
"Alright, alright."
They talked about this and that to lighten the mood. Eventually, the androgynous waiter returned with the overpriced dishes Jeonghyeon had insisted on getting.
It was a bit painful to admit, but they looked fantastic. Steaming hot, lovingly decorated, artfully plated.
Hanbin snapped a quick picture of their meals. If it included a smiling Leejeong, too, well, who was he to complain?
Somehow, this was easier than he had imagined before entering the establishment, mind full of worries.
He had been silly for it; they had been friends for a long time.
Therefore, it should have come as no surprise that they could effortlessly converse and relate to each other.
Once he had gotten somewhat used to the concept of being on a date with Jeonghyeon, Hanbin found it… nice. His heart rate never fully recovered; there was something too thrilling about the other's presence. A feeling too electrifying to possibly subside.
They were almost done eating when Hanbin glanced at the flowers on their table.
'What kind of person wouldn't get their boyfriend something for their anniversary?'
Jeonghyeon must believe, Hanbin realised with sudden horror, that HE was that kind of person.
"Jeonghyeoniii~~~"
A startled sound in response.
"Why did you just accept that I brought no gifts for you? It's our anniversary! How can you not be upset?"
Hanbin felt offended on his behalf. His boyfriend put in all this effort to be the perfect partner, yet he seemed to expect nothing in return. How was that fair?
"Oh! To be honest, I'm just happy you're here. I have no other wish than spending time with you. It's more than I could have ever asked for," Jeonghyeon explained. As if it made sense. As if those sentences didn't tilt Hanbin's entire world off-axis.
In an attempt at realigning the planets of his internal solar system, the idol grabbed his bag as nonchalantly as he could manage (not very), opened it up, then searched for the key ring.
Hanbin scolded his date: "You should want more than that. You're such a thoughtful and incredible partner. How can you be okay with mediocrity? I hope you can ask me for things I'm lacking in the future. If you're upset about anything, please tell me."
"I will. Thank you," he promised.
"You know, I did get you something. Nothing big, I should have gotten you a nicer gift, honestly…"
Jeonghyeon cut him off.
"No. Stop it with this nonsense. What matters to me most is that you thought of me, too. Show me!"
Once again, the words were too real. Hanbin had no defense for the other's genuine excitement; it scared him a little. He complied nonetheless, pulled out the green kitty key ring and carefully handed it over to Jeonghyeon.
The green enthusiast's eyes lit up at the briefest glance already, and he stared at the tiny creature with the most adoring eyes Hanbin had ever seen from him.
"HANBINI! It's perfect, oh my god. My son! He's so cute, I can't believe this. How could you think I would ever want anything else? This is my literal baby. Whoa, you know me so well, I'm touched. Really."
Too adorable. Too sweet. Too lovely.
Even though Hanbin was still processing everything else that had happened, his heart melted, and, in this moment, he let himself accept it at all. Think about it later.
Sometimes, the highest form of perfection wasn't spending countless hours polishing and improving something. Sometimes, perfection was Jeonghyeon's dazzling though slightly crooked smile, the way he admired Hanbin and some really good food.
And happiness? Happiness was Jeonghyeon; so close to him.
"Yoo Seungeon, we're getting breakfast together."
The aforementioned lifted his gaze up from his phone to stare at Hanbin, blinked slowly, then shrugged his shoulders.
"Sure, if you're paying, hyung."
All there was to do for the idol was to sigh exasperatedly.
"Whatever."
Unfortunately, he desperately needed to talk to the person in their group who was closest with Jeonghyeon. It happened to be their main vocalist, Seungeon; loud, unhinged, hardworking.
Generally speaking, Hanbin was lucky it was him. Trying to get any sort of information out of Jihoo, their mischievous maknae, or the other Junghyun would be 100x worse.
His blood pressure rose just thinking about the draining endeavour that would have been. Those two would gnaw away at his patience until there was barely any left. He would never hear the end of it, either, doomed to suffer through eternal humiliation over the whole situation.
I cannot believe I'm thinking this right now, but...
Thank goodness for Yoo Seungeon.
They filled the silence between them at the cafe Jeonghyeon's best friend had picked with some easy smalltalk while they waited for their food.
As soon as it was served, Hanbin took a big bite of his bagel, then a deep breath.
"Why on earth am I dating Leejeong?", he started.
Seungeon choked on his weirdly shaped pastry, then chuckled, clearly amused by the whole situation. Annoying brat.
"Because… you like him? I don't know, I wouldn't personally make that mistake."
God, this guy was infuriating. Deep breaths.
He's your group's golden voice main vocal, you still need him.
Not that Hanbin could dispute the claim, but it was not the answer he had wanted, and the insinuation that dating their group member was a mistake felt incredibly offensive to him.
"No, I mean, how did we end up dating?"
At this, the other's expression dropped.
"Oh my god," he gasped, "I was right… You really weren't serious back then. Because who would be, honestly? I love Jeonghyeonie hyung, but he's genuinely a bit delusional sometimes…"
As the words kept flowing, Hanbin's confusion only increased.
So, the older felt the need to interrupt: "What the hell are you talking about, Seungeon?"
"Ah, right. Sorry, hyung. Let me start at the beginning. You remember how our last promotions ended, and we all went out to drink together?"
Still puzzled, Hanbin nodded.
"Some time passed, then only you, Jeonghyeonie hyung, Yunseo, and I were left. The others had gone home. I think you had drunk a lot by that point, because you suddenly grabbed some random guy's drink right out of his hand, placed it on the table and announced that whoever drank it was dating you. Yunseo and I didn't take you seriously at all, we just went "ewww", then left to get the poor man you stole from a new drink to prevent further damages.
Well, I guess poor lovesick Jeonghyeonie hyung assumed you were serious for some reason.
He must've thought something like: "I want to date Hanbini, let's do it." So he drank it and never looked back.
That's how you ended up with a boyfriend, from the way I see it. Ask him for further clarification, though."
WOW! Much to think about.
Hanbin would NOT be asking Jeonghyeon for further clarification. Way too risky.
He was grateful to be sitting down as he felt a bit weak in the knees at that moment.
Across from him, Seungeon was happily munching away while somewhat monitoring his reaction still.
"Oh, Jeonghyeoni…"
It was very on brand for his silly, wildly devoted boyfriend; Hanbin's heart ached a bit at the thought. Sweet, lovely, oblivious Jeonghyeon.
How was I so blind? He might be the least subtle person alive…
If he really reflected more deeply on it, Hanbin HAD noticed Jeonghyeon being more clingy with him, but he had dismissed that behaviour as his friend having a quarter-life crisis or something for the sake of his tender, fragile heart. Reading anything into the other's behaviour would have meant he had to question more things. That would have most likely led to spiralling and loss of sleep that Hanbin genuinely needed.
It was much easier to explain it all away. So that's what he had done, unaware of how it might have seemed to Jeonghyeon.
And Jeonghyeon? He was much too understanding and accommodating to ever bring it up. A sense of guilt weighed heavily on Hanbin with this realisation.
From now on, he swore to himself, he would be much more affectionate towards Jeonghyeon, too.
Lee Jeonghyeon was many things: delusional, a bit dense, terrible at feelings (it had taken him YEARS to figure out why he felt so weird and giggly around Hanbin specifically), to name a few.
However, he was not stupid. He noticed the sudden changes in his boyfriend's behaviour. The way he would suddenly lean into his touches instead of avoiding or simply tolerating them, how he would catch Jeonghyeon's gaze while staring at him and keep his eyes trained on him anyway, how he would sweetly smile at him, or offer him some of his favourite snacks (Hanbin disliked most of them) after a long practice session. It was a difference like day and night.
Even someone as oblivious as Jeonghyeon was bound to realise: Seungeon must have been right when he had voiced his doubts about the nature of Hanbin's flirty comment a couple of months ago. It had been a joke.
God, that's so embarrassing… What am I supposed to do now?
The more he mulled it all over in his brain, though, the stranger the whole situation he was in seemed. Because why did Hanbin just accept that they were dating? Why did he immediately act along accordingly?

My Hanbini🩵 has reacted to your message: ♡
They were dating. There was no other reasonable explanation.
What if he was being delusional again? It might have taken Hanbin a while to understand how serious Jeonghyeon was about their relationship and feel fully comfortable expressing his own feelings.
He would have to ask his boyfriend later.
Jeonghyeon smiled. His boyfriend.
It had been months, yet the word, just like its implications, still sent a shiver down his spine; in the best way. Hanbin had chosen him. He continued to do so every day.
'Lucky' must have been the understatement of the century for how Jeonghyeon felt about dating him.
Just the thought of seeing the other later made Jeonghyeon feel lighter; there was a quiet beauty to every single little thing he encountered throughout the day. Tiny moments of happiness.
"Hi, my love, thanks for meeting me here!", Jeonghyeon greeted, hugging his partner and gently fixing his hair since then were in public which meant he had to restrain himself from any more explicitly romantic gestures.
There was a warmth to Hanbin's voice when he replied: "Hey Jjeongi, I missed you."
"Missed you, too, beautiful. Let's go."
As always, he held open the door for his company, pulled out his chair for the other and handed him the menu. Jeonghyeon would have done it either way, it was the polite thing to do, but the slight blush on Hanbin's face as he shyly thanked him paired with the softest little smile made it all the more rewarding for him.
Both of them placed their orders, then he brought his attention back to Hanbin, who was already looking at him.
"Back then…", Jeonghyeon began, "you were joking, weren't you?"
It was almost comedic, the way colour drained from his boyfriend's face.
"I mean-", a deep breath, "Okay, wait."
Fortunately for him, Jeonghyeon was a more patient man than Hanbin. He was also mainly beyond puzzled. There was no reason not to trust his friend when he had both told and shown Jeonghyeon in various ways that he liked him. It wouldn't make sense for him to lie about that; there was no benefit to it for Hanbin. Dating as an idol was risky.
His boyfriend (?) was popular, too. For companionship and deep connection, he had Yunseo; for hookups, there was a whole lineup of people just waiting for him to say the word. It was a bitter thought to Jeonghyeon, he tried to ignore it most of the time.
Anyway, they were gathered to resolve his confusion. His date cleared his throat.
"Originally, yes, I was joking. But I swear this isn't a joke to me! You caught me off guard so bad a while ago, talking about it being our anniversary, taking me to this fancy place and all… BUT! I never lied to you.
Jeonghyeoni, I want to be with you. You make me so happy, sometimes I need to pinch myself to check if this is real," his boyfriend (!) confessed.
That had been a lot of information all at once. Jeonghyeon blinked, let his mind wander and process the way it wanted to, got lost in the other's eyes.
Cautiously, as if whatever they had might break if he spoke too harshly, Hanbin whispered: "I love you."
And it should have been this grand, dramatic revelation to Jeonghyeon that shook him to his core, shattered his heart into a million pieces just to reorganise them to spell out Hanbin's name. This sensation that hits you like a speeding truck, with an intensity that was impossible to fathom unless you had experienced it yourself, something that would turn your whole world upside down.
It wasn't.
Instead, it reminded Jeonghyeon of being wrapped in a warm blanket on a freezing winter day, a cup of hot cocoa in hand. Warmth and comfort were spreading in his body until it had reached every single cell. It was like the best hug he had ever received and like dancing together in warm summer rain, laughing at anything and everything.
No, the words didn't feel like an explosion of fireworks. They felt like coming home.
Because deep down, Jeonghyeon had known for a while now. He was sure Hanbin had, too.
Neither of them had ever said it out loud to each other, but the love was evident in everything they did.
In the way Jeonghyeon stayed longer after practice with his boyfriend sometimes, just to watch him dance. In the way Hanbin carried snacks he didn't care for in the slightest and bought little somethings only because they were green, which reminded him of his beautiful lover. In the way Jeonghyeon frequently purchased the 1+1 offers at the convenience store if they had something Hanbin liked and then pretended that it had been on accident, handing one product over to the other idol. In the way Hanbin side-eyed other people if their gazes lingered on his Jeonghyeoni a moment too long or if they looked a bit too intensely, 'forcing' him to lean into his man, slide an arm around the other's waist and take his hand. No matter what kind of interaction, there was love in it.
So when Hanbin told Jeonghyeon that he loved him for the first time on this fateful afternoon, the latter just smiled softly at him and mouthed: "I love you, too."
It was unspectacular, really. All of it had been a long time coming.
Still, also for the first time in a very long time, Hanbin felt a sense of calm settle in.
For years, it had been dance practice, vocal lessons, filming, music shows, work, work, work. They had indeed worked tirelessly, built up the perfect pretence for the fans, hoped and prayed for it to work out. On the survival show, they had gone on together; it hadn't. Both of them had gotten very close to achieving their dreams, only to lose it all in the end.
Hanbin's life had been a rollercoaster for so long, full of uncertainty and stressful business meetings. Many of them had been pointless.
On a pretty average autumn day in September, in mild weather without any rain, Jeonghyeon gave him peace.
"Wait, Hanbini, I just realised."
He hummed in response, indicating for the other to go on.
"On our 100-day anniversary, you had a gift for me, too. But you didn't even know I thought we were dating. So… why?"
Two seconds later, Hanbin's carefree laughter echoed through the cafe.
"You're right. I did.
What can I say? I noticed the key chain on my way to our date and it reminded me of you. I guess I must really like you, Jjeong."
Oh!
Oh.
Flustered, he focused his attention on the plate in front of him.
"Wait, I also have a question, though.
Mr Perfect Boyfriend, why did you not ask me to spend our 22-day anniversary together? Do you not like me?" Hanbin sulked.
Feeling attacked, Jeonghyeon rushed to defend his honour: "I LITERALLY DID! You just seemed so invested in whatever plans you had with Yunseo for that day. I didn't want to be that overly clingy, annoying guy who ruins his own boyfriend's joy…"
At that, Hanbin's fake offended expression melted into something incredibly softer.
"Oh, Jeonghyeoni. Please bother me and wreck my plans for the rest of our lives."
Then, he smirked, the look in his eyes dipping into something more scandalous.
"And about that date we missed out on… Maybe we could make up for that today…", Hanbin trailed off, winking afterwards.
Jeonghyeon almost choked on his drink.
