Work Text:

(has my own headcanons -uthman thinks more human-like and wears a lab coat)
The Kindergarten hadn’t changed much, even with the lower floors being destroyed and run over with the Givanium monsters the scientists thought it was a good idea to make. Even The Surgeon agreed it was a bad idea, and yet he started his own town. Uthman was reckless yet calculated, as usual, and made sure that he had his stock of random donor pancreas’ just so he wouldn't lash out at the other creatures he lived around. Stinger Flynn wasn't too happy about it, but as long as it kept Uthman under control. BanBaleena wasn’t too much of an issue, staying in her sector and teaching her object students. Opila Bird was staying with her chicks, staying out of the way with her mate. Den Den, Uthman’s one actual friend, stayed with him. To the others, he was Den Den. to Uthman, he was Diego.

Diego, his long lasting human friend turned Givanium creature. A cat thing, really. When he was human, he was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer. It was a devastating realization. He was already losing that fire he once had. Uthman watched him literally deteriorate, before he couldn't take it anymore. It hurt too much to see his friend like that. So exhausted every day, so tired and so malnourished, even if Uthman made sure he ate everything he needed, a pancreas or two snuck into the homemade meals. Eh, he obviously needed the protein.

One day, he decided to take matters into his own hands. Knocking his favorite human unconscious, strapping him down to a table. All it took was a scalpel, a few hours of hard work and another Givanium body. And maybe a little cat brain. He just needed to replace the necrotized parts of the human’s brain, humans and cats aren't that different, right? He could only find two different colored bodies, and each being half. Either way, he looked like a BitterGiggle test gone wrong. Oh well. He had to calm down the guy when he first woke up in his new body, but it was all for the greater good. Uthman needed to keep his human alive, and this was even better. He was keeping him alive, somehow.

It was calm, Diego was learning to help and function with his mind switches, and still tried to accommodate the other residents. When the Garten fell, Diego stayed. Everyone called him Den Den for some reason, but he didnt mind. His cat mind took to it as a name, and it was a nickname when he was a human. When that human parent came down and ruined the whole civilization they had running, Uthman wouldn't even think of letting Diego near it. Ugh, humans. It could put Diego in danger. And maybe, he could get a fresh pancreas, he hadn't had one in ages. Yummy. Some humans were just annoying. Most of them were, really. Eh.. all of them. All of them sucked, save for Diego.

Then again, he wasn't really human anymore, so Uthman didnt need an exception. A little oopsie here and there, but he still got that human down for the count. At least he didn’t have to deal with Nab Nab down there, and he got those keycards from that wayward parent. Hell yes. Uthman had wandered around the Garten for that day, just trying to find something to do on the only actually safe level there was. Stinger Flynn took to the cat-thing quite well, watching over ‘Den Den’ while Uthman couldn’t. For some reason, he trusted the jellyfish with someone as important as him. That was probably stupid, but there hadn’t been any major issues just yet. He huffed softly as he walked, adjusting the one of the party hats settled on his horns. It got itchy sometimes.

A noise, a shuffle in the distance got Uthman’s attention, making him glance to the side. It was probably just Banbaleena looking for a loitering student. Eh, might as well help. He turned and began to walk that way, leaning down to step through the normally sized doorway. He was just tall as hell. He huffed as his horns nicked against the doorway, shaking his head. Leaning up and looking around, the hallway was empty. Hm. with a soft step, he continued walking. A tiny glimpse caught his eye, a flicker of movement. Oh, it was one of those tails. Ah, Diego. Uthman let out a small chuckle, calming down. “Diego, it's just me. You’re safe. Opila isn't anywhere on this floor, remember?” he chimed, turning that corner. That smile was wiped off his face. He saw that stupid human. That stupid human, standing over an unconscious Diego. What the fuck. He stared for a good moment, before taking a step forward that sounded louder than his heartbeats.

“What.. did you do?” he ground out, eyes narrowing, sharp teeth gritting together in a painful noise. The human winced and stepped back, knowing they had overstayed thier welcome. They glanced numerous times from the cat-thing on the floor to the fuming devil-thing approaching them, obviously knowing they fucked up. They put their hands up, the drone controller almost falling from thier grip. If only they’d actually say something. Uthman growled, clawed hands gripping nothing, as if trying to put some form of control over his already unstable emotions.

“What did you do?!” he barked, lunging forward to grab the human by the neck, slamming them against the wall. He wasn’t pulling any punches when it came to his favorite thing. He stared right at that wayward parent, huffing through his nose. The only thing that stopped him from absolutely destroying that puny human was a tiny noise that came from behind him. A little groan, before a tiny shuffle. With a glance back, he let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding. Diego had gotten up slightly, rubbing his head. He propped himself up on his elbow, wincing.

“U-.. Uthman?” he murmured, those mismatched eyes looking up at him with such confusion. Uthman dropped the human, ignoring how they coughed and gasped, immediately moving to Diego’s side. He hesitated to touch the givanium creature, hands slightly shaking.

“You’re okay? What happened?” he asked, as if scared to scratch the boy in front of him.

“I-i don’t know. I was.. I was walking down here, Stinger Flynn said it was safe. Then.. it all went black.” he tried to explain, rubbing a sore spot next to his ear. His tails flicked, ears tipping back slightly. At least his body was reacting to stimuli, that was good. Uthman huffed softly, letting his adrenaline drift away for a moment. He peered over his shoulder, shooting the human a glare.

“Did you see the parent? Did they hurt you?” he asked, tilting his head as he looked back at those mismatched eyes. the cat-thing shook his head softly, letting out another small groan.

“n-no, I don't think so. I didn't see them before..” he answered, taking hold of Uthman’s clawed hands with no hesitation. he had no problem with those. he liked his hands, they were so cool.
