Work Text:
It felt like a punishment that Nanami was spending this perfectly normal Tuesday teaching the new intern how to shelve books. But then, he felt like it was his own fault considering he had been the one to complain about the way he had been done. The intern was tall and handsome and he seemed far too confident for someone who was just graduating from college.
“So why am I getting the book shelving talk again?” He asked, not even looking at Nanami as he spoke. This was Gojo Satoru, according to the name tag on his chest and he was never supposed to be Nanami’s problem. Training new people didn’t usually fall to him, but when he’d arrived that morning the instruction had been given to him directly from head librarian Yaga to get the new kid up to speed.
“Are you sure you’ve already had this training? I’ve found several areas you failed to shelve properly. Who taught you the first time?”
“Yu-senpai.” And Nanami’s face went utterly cold. Not only had his friend somehow failed to train the new intern, but he had him calling him a ridiculous honorific as well. The phone in his back pocket buzzed, and he had to assume it was Haibara who somehow always seemed to know when Nanami was strangling him in his mind.
“And Haibara-san didn’t tell you to make sure all of the books needed to be right side up?” He put heavy emphasis on the name to try and make a point as he indicated a book that had been returned to the shelf earlier with its title upside down. Gojo at least had the decency to look shocked when faced with such a basic error. He started fixing the ones he could see that were incorrect, as well as starting in on the new cart that needed to be put back. It might have been his imagination, but it also seemed like Gojo was trying to show off his ass every time he bent over. No one else needed to bend that way when getting to the lowest shelves. At least, Nanami noted, it was an ass worth showing off.
“To be fair to my senpai, we got a little distracted talking about gossip from around the library and he didn’t teach me that much.” Gojo offered, to which Nanami was still not impressed.
“There really can’t be enough gossip around this place to keep you from learning the basics. You need to make sure that’s alphabetical by name.” He warned as Gojo was about to shelve another book from his cart in the wrong spot.
“You’re so observant! No wonder everyone here says you’re the best.”
“Is that part of the gossip you were sharing?”
Gojo blushed and Nanami was unsurprised to learn that it looked good on him. With a face like his, just about anything would look good on him, so it really shouldn’t have been that impressive.
“Not really, but sort of. He did say some nice things about you. But can I ask you something serious?”
“I’m not sure how I could stop you, so go ahead.” There were any number of ridiculous or salacious things that Gojo could be asking about that would relate to the library. Every work place had its tall tales, both true and otherwise. And if Nanami knew about them, Yu was undoubtedly the one who had told him.
“Is the thing about the head librarian making all of the puppets for the children’s puppet show himself true? They seem professionally made.”
That was not at all what Nanami expected to hear. If that was the worst gossip he had maybe he didn’t have to be upset with Haibara after all.
“Yaga does indeed make them all himself by hand. He enjoys the work and the results speak for themselves.”
“No kidding, I thought maybe he stole them from a TV show set!” Gojo was so excited he almost shoved another book blindly back into the shelf he was working on. Nanami clearing his throat at the right time snapped him back just in time.
Gojo managed to finish the rest of the section without further need for correction and he was far too proud of himself for it considering it never should have needed to be redone. He wasn’t quite as triumphant to see the second cart of books.
Nanami was careful to wait until Gojo was in between shelving before he asked. “So what exactly did Haibara have to say about me?”
And he was right to, because the intern jumped at his words in a way that made him seem particularly guilty.
“Oh, just normal stuff. It wasn’t anything bad, I promise.”
“I’m sure it wasn’t, but it also might not have been true, so I would like to correct the record if I can.”
There was that lovely blush on Gojo again. He would enjoy it more if he was certain Haibara wasn’t telling people Nanami had a huge cock the way he had several years earlier in a bar. The night had not ended as well as either of them wanted after that and Yu was lucky Nanami still talked to him. Gojo cleared his throat and looked back at his shelving.
“He wasn’t lying about the puppets and I hope he wasn’t lying about you either. All he said was that you dated men and that you were a top.”
There weren’t a lot of reasons for that to come up let alone as gossip. Another message buzzed in Nanami’s pocket and it suddenly seemed much more important than it had earlier. He pulled his phone out to find several earlier missed messages from Haibara.
YU: ur welcome for having you train Satoru-kun today
YU: he was asking about u yesterday
YU: he thinks ur hot
And then the most recent message that had demanded his attention a moment before:
YU: u should ask him out!!!
As much as he disliked Haibara’s meddling it might actually pay off for once.
“He wasn’t lying about either of those things. And if he was discussing it with you I feel it’s safe to assume you have reason to want to know.”
Gojo’s cheeks were bright red and he was watching Nanami intently. There was a slight nod, if he hadn’t been watching his trainee just as intently he might have missed it. It was adorable how easy he was to read. And despite being just a bit taller than Nanami he was apparently a bottom as well. It felt a little too good to be true, but Nanami wasn’t going to question it when all he wanted was to see just how far that blush would spread over Gojo’s body when his clothes were off.
“How about this, Gojo-kun, if you can get the rest of the shelving done with no mistakes I will give you my phone number.”
Everything was put back perfectly by the end of the day.
