Primary Overview
On 09.09.20◼◼, an anonymous digital forum received an unsolicited image upload. The photograph depicted a standardized white hotel-grade door featuring a gold nameplate etched with the digits "999." Present in an odd location, at the middle of an empty subway platform, the digital clock above at a distance read 03:33 hours, a time period at which the facility does not operate. Considering this to be some sort of scam, users began mass reporting the post until it was taken down from the forum. All attempts to retrieve that image have ended in failure and is now regarded to be impossible. Any downloads of the image that had been made seem to now only remain as corrupted, irreparable image files.
Within 168 hours of the initial deletion, secondary manifestations occurred across various diverse locations, including public lavatories, libraries, and remote campsites. Each instance featured the identical white door, though the nameplate designations varied between numbers of a seemingly specific numerological significance (e.g., "1", "333", "7"). These 'angelic' designations align with traditional biblical sequences. In every instance, timestamps confirm the images were captured during hours when the locations were strictly closed to the public and/or would be deserted. As with the primary post, these images were purged within one hour, leaving only corrupted data remnants.
Note
However, there is one single exception.
(Senior Researcher seems to audibly distressed about her findings. There is a sound of pacing and something being knocked off the table with a thud. There is silence for a brief moment before the creak of a chair as the Researcher settles down with a heavy breath.)
Subject 103 was dispatched solo to Asphodel following the discovery and logging of it at the Disaster Management Bureau. The reasons for this solo dispatch are suspected to be [DATA EXPUNGED] as far as we can tell from the recovered communication logs. For those unaware, a solo dispatch is an incredibly rare [DATA EXPUNGED] for Subject 103 [DATA EXPUNGED] alone [DATA EXPUNGED]... I'm afraid this opens an entirely new, and much more grave cause for concern.
Sorry, I got a little off-track there. Before their dispatch into the Darkness, Subject 103 managed to contact Director ◼◼ to request a Dream Essence Collector, and this request was promptly granted with the assumption that Subject 103 wished to bring back some high-grade Dream Essence for some additional points. It is not an understanding shared by me. Dream Essence Collectors are next to indestructible and also serve as recording devices—like a black box on a plane—it is to my and my colleague's belief that a person formerly on an Elite Exploration Team would be aware of this and—
(There's the sound of a fist slamming onto the table. Researcher sounds to be close to a mental breakdown.)

Sorry... I'm sorry, I keep going off-track. Fuck! This is too much... Anyways, at the exact second the Dream Essence Collector returned to Daydream Inc. the last and final photograph was posted to that anonymous forum. This however, was different. It was not the image of a solitary door as usual, but rather a picture with the open door shrouded in darkness despite the sunlight. The meadow was greem and deserted and it...
There was a being standing there. Barely a silhouette. Looking directly at the camera. I couldn't see it's eyes but I knew.
...
I sound crazy, don't I...?

✴Here at Daydream Inc. we care about our empl— Shut up. Please, shut the fuck up! God fucking damn it, can't you see I'm doing something!? I don't need therapy!

(There's a sound of rapid, heavy breathing.)
...
We thought nothing of it and downloaded the image, and right on time as the 60 minute mark hit, the post was taken down and/or deleted from the forum. But strangely, our saved image did not corrupt like we expected it to. Instead, the name of the file changed. Nothing really 'strange' you know? I work at Daydream after all but... I don't know. I'm not a religious person, believe me—I don't go to a church nor do I pray, I doubt there's even a God in this hellish existence of ours but that night I went home and I prayed. I was afraid. I know you're thinking that it would've been Contamination, but it wasn't! I got it checked first, it wasn't any kind of Contamination, at least not a type that we know of. I was just scared. And—
(Researcher laughs)
I mean if you're working here then you should very well know that none of us here are cowards, especially not me. This wasn't your average fear, this was primal... instinctive? Something uncanny burnt into the ape part of our brain through thousands of years of evolution.
...
Death.
Laugh at me all you want, but I know what I saw.

-Excerpt, Personal Addendum XI | Senior Researcher Lee Yeonwha
The Darkness is confirmed not be an isolated system. The doors appear to be connected by some sort of internal pathway. Upon opening any door, the person is faced with the exact same view, a small landing followed by a set of stairs that seem to go upwards, stretching what appears to be infinitely. There are lights on most landings although some do have malfunctioning ones, however, no two consecutive landings are shrouded in the dark as far as it's been tested.

Img 999.2: The Halls - Space Within
First responders on the second site attempted the safest possible method of mapping out the Darkness after their testing—as typical of the Disaster Management Bureau. Two agents were paired up and one agent held the door open while the other stepped within QTERW-?-999 to assess and record. All photos taken digitally failed and were corrupted however a method was soon devised where the picture would be taken in analog and then converted to digital, this led to the image having, almost eerily, the exact same quality of picture as the motion-sensing security camera outside. A low-resolution, high-contrast security still with heavy VHS-style chromatic aberration and digital noise. There were no supernatural phenomena discovered except for the staircase and the door itself.

Img 999.3: The Staircase
The Darkness transitioned from digital sightings to a series of localized fatalities. While initially suppressed by government-influenced media as "missing persons" cases, immediate Bureau investigations confirmed a 100% mortality rate. Victims were discovered to have been brutally processed (murdered?)and immolated beyond biological recognition. Any exposure to the remains, including even mere viewing, has been noted to induce acute psychological trauma, characterized by intense clinical despair and a fervent, pathological need for "repentance" in witnesses.

All affected geographical sectors were promptly quarantined by the Disaster Management Bureau. The phenomenon was logged as an Unknown Type, designation 3969PSYA.20◼◼.NA33, and registered to the Daydream Inc. database as QTERW-?-999. As of this writing, the Darkness is considered resolved, with no further incidents reported. There are no longer any methods to access QTERW-?-999.
For all intents and purposes QTERW-?-999 will henceforth be referred to as "Asphodel".
Administrative Note
This report utilizes data recovered by an operative formerly of the Field Exploration Department, Elite Team A. Due to sensitive mission parameters involving a secret directive commissioned by Director ◼◼, this individual is hereafter designated Subject 103 ("Agent Mango"). The subject was dispatched to the Disaster Management Bureau as an insider under instructions. Director ◼◼ has formally clarified that the following events were entirely divergent from the intended directive of the Subject's project. Subject 103 is currently considered deceased; consequently, their employment contract with Daydream Inc. has been terminated and all accumulated points have been nullified.
This report was constructed by Assistant Manager Lee Yeonwha of Research Team 1, under the direct supervision of Team Manager and Senior Researcher Kwak Jegang. Viewers of this file are advised to proceed with caution. Following this point is the complete and unredacted research records regarding the anomalous occurrence named as Asphodel.
Transcript: Session 999-A
Lee Yeonhwa: Check 1, Check 2, Is this heap of junk functioning? Good. Begin Log. This is Session 999-A, on the discussion of Agent Mango's final communication logs before the incident at Asphodel. I am Senior Researcher Lee Yeonwha, Assistant Manager of Research Team 1 and with me is my direct supervisor, Senior Researcher Kwak Jegang, Manager of Research Team 1.
Kwak Jegang: Hello hello! Are we finally getting on with this?
Lee Yeonhwa: It's two in the morning, you could sound less cheerful sir.
(There's a light chuckle of disagreement. A chair creaks as someone settles into it. A sound like shuffling papers is heard followed by a rush of exhaled breath.)
Lee Yeonhwa: Anyways...
Kwak Jegang: Ah. Getting back on track. Asphodel's is a delightful case to theorize on but it was a nightmare trying to get to the point that we are now. Trying to convert the exact data type from the damaged Dream Essence Collector of Subject 103 turned out to be a more tedious task than expected.
Lee Yeonhwa: Agreed. Essentially, Dream Essence Collectors store the user's actions in two types: Metaphysical Experience Data and Physical Data. It's rarity that we ever have to extract Metaphysical data, the last time any of the Research Teams had to do it was... what? Around thirty tears ago?
(There's a light snicker from Researcher Jegang.)
Kwak Jegang: Oh I remember that well. It was beautiful seeing that wolf bastard being [REDACTED]

You are suspended from work without pay for the following week. Kindly note that another offence of a similar strain will lead you to a rather unfortunate meet & greet event with the Security Team.
Kwak Jegang: This little—
Lee Yeonhwa: ...
(Audio Log is abruptly cut, it is assumed that the Senior Researcher was cursing out the automated system.)
Kwak Jegang: Dream Essence Collectors only ever return to Daydream for two reasons. The user's death and/or irreversible contamination. In this case, considering the data we've received, I think it's more than safe to say that Subject 103is deceased. Or is deceased even the right word?
Lee Yeonhwa: Deceased is appropriate enough.
(papers slide across the desk)
Lee Yeonhwa: Moving on, we put our focus to the communication logs. On the 17th of September, Agent Mango sent a rather frantic message to the company over the QTERW-?-999 Darkness which had popped up in and around Seoul. Initially it had seemed like the average Internet creepypasta type Darkness with a strangely large radius, but it wasn't uncommon for Darknesses to behave like that. All public details of the Darkness are be present in the Primary Overview. The victims all appear in strange places, right next to a freestanding door and a trail of blood that seems to suggest that the victims' corpses were dragged out before immolation. Images of the bodies have been censored to prevent Contamination.
Img 999.4: Public Lavatory
Img 999.5: Campsite
Kwak Jegang: Yes, yes, can we move on to the fun bits now? This isn't for public viewing anyway.
Lee Yeonhwa: Fun? These are lives, sir. Actual human lives.
Kwak Jegang: Were lives—
(strange silence lasts for a minute or so, there is gentle creak of a chair as if someone's getting up and then sitting down.)
Lee Yeonhwa: ...
(there is audible, increasing excitement in the Researcher's voice as he speaks)
Kwak Jegang: In the last image caught by the camera, we receive confirmation that the Agents were wrong. The corpses were not part of the phenomenon itself, rather it is my hypothesis that the phenomenon known as Asphodel is relatively harmless, but the entity living in that space is not. As for what that entity is... we are yet to parse through the MXD to figure it out. But none of that is the focus here. The main thing here is that it seems that Subject 103 was completely unaware of this entity.

Img 999.6: Hanged
Lee Yeonhwa: What makes you say that?
Kwak Jegang: Consider it your senior's hunch okay?
Lee Yeonhwa: So you have no proof...
Kwak Jegang: I have a suspicion. Have some faith in you superior once in a while~!~
Lee Yeonhwa: (heavy sigh) So that brings the end to this session then? Nothing fruitful today.
Kwak Jegang: On the contrary Researcher Lee, today was a breakthrough!
Lee Yeonwha: Huh?
Kwak Jegang: Listen to the last sentence from the retrieval again.
Lee Yeonhwa: What for? ...He switches up his goodbye. But technically isn't it the same thing? "Goodbye" is the contraction of the phrase "God be with ye" after all...
(Quiet)
Kwak Jegang: You should be able to tell by now Assistant Researcher, I trust your judgement. Plus, I believe you've been suspecting something along these lines for a while, am I correct?
(Quiet)
Lee Yeonhwa: He's not religious.
Kwak Jegang: No.
Lee Yeonhwa: That isn’t stress speech either. It’s deliberate. He pauses before it.
Kwak Jegang: Recognition event.
Lee Yeonhwa: Of what?
Kwak Jegang: (light laughter) That he would of course. That he would!
Lee Yeonhwa: End Log.

"Director, hey. Just the daily check. The Bureau’s honestly easier than expected. Everyone’s very by-the-book if that is what you expected. I’ve already slipped into internal routing chains, nobody double-checks clearance if you've already cozied up with the Team heads. Give me a couple more days and I should be able to gain access to the location where the files you wanted are being kept. Nothing particularly strange, and no one seems to suspect me either. Anyway, still moving forward. I’ll update again tomorrow. Goodbye."

"Director. Daydream Inc. should already know what's shown up today right? The radius of the affect is massive. The DMB's logged it as an "Unknown Type," which already means nobody knows exactly what to grade whatever the hell that thing is. Sorry if I sound tired today but I've been running around the city and it's surroundings, shunting between quarantine zone to quarantine zone. The Bureau isn't panicking yet but the agents all seem concerned, plus the corpses have some unprecedented levels of Contamination and it's contagious. We've had to perform at least 67 memory wipes, including ourselves. Despite the Cognitive Interference Barrier, the Contamination seems to be leaking in.
I came back in the evening and reviewed the documented material and every single line reads fine on its own but together it feels like it was written for a different incident. It's... Director you know the Darknesses I've worked in right? This is nothing compared to those and yet... strange. I don't know what else to call it.
I tried explaining that to one of the analysts and halfway through my sentence he just nodded and continued filing like I’d confirmed the opposite of what I said. That kept happening. Just displacement. I’d point at a contradiction and they’d respond to a version of the conversation that never occurred. After the third time I stopped pushing because it started feeling rude, like insisting someone heard a joke they genuinely couldn’t hear. Nobody looks stressed either. No tension in the room. They’re treating it as routine paperwork. I know how this sounds. I can’t prove anything yet and I’m not calling contamination, but something about this refuses to sit in my head properly."
"Sorry, got a little too into it. I know this wasn't what you asked me to do and I apologize for that, I'll get back to my duties tomorrow. Goodbye."

Not provisional solo, not first-entry solo. Just… solo. The gear allocation looks like a team deployment but nobody acknowledges that when I bring it up. It’s like the conversation resets around the question. I’m going to try to get them to attach another unit. Hyunmoo Team 1 is more than capable even if they lack one man—honestly it’d be the normal decision. I don't even mind if they go with me. This solo thing just feels strange... Not avoidance—they genuinely think they responded properly. They all passed barrier checks this morning. Clean results. That shouldn’t be possible if this is contamination, but it behaves like one. The meaning of what I say just… doesn’t arrive to them. I can see the moment it fails. They’re still proceeding with the solo dispatch. Please, I don’t think they understand they are."
