The Non-Existent Vampire of Gotham

Summary:

Batman is a loner. He prefers to stay in Gotham, mind his business, and take care of his ward, Dick Grayson. But when he gets caught on camera while on a patrol, that video ends up online and he becomes Gotham's biggest urban legend almost overnight. What will he do when he gets roped into joining the Justice League, who all think he's a vampire?

Or: Basically everybody thinks Batman is a vampire, including the Justice League, and he doesn't even try to deny it.

Chapter 1: Chapter 1- Getting caught

Notes:

Hello everybody reading this, just a quick disclaimer. I selected that this fic was for "general audiences", but there still is some minor violence and swearing. I might change the rating based on how this fic progresses, because I don't have it all planned out yet. I have already written the first 7-8 chapters and plan on posting weekly. This is also the first fic I am writing, so please be nice.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

BATMAN:

Bruce sighed.
He was exhausted. Not only had he not slept in the last week because of the excessive amounts of gang violence in Gotham recently, but his 11 year old, Dick, had decided that every day was going to become April fools. He had been constantly finding Whoopi cushions on his chairs, and salt in his sugar shakers. He always played along, of course, as he couldn’t bear to see the disappointment on his child’s face when the pranks failed. Still, it was getting out of hand. They would have to have a conversation later once this patrol was over. Looking around from the rooftop he was perched at, he called out in code to robin, who was on the opposite building.

“Looks clear, let’s head home!” He yelled, as there were sounds of traffic everywhere. Their communicators had been smashed during a nasty brawl with the joker and his goons, so they had to resort to their coded language while they were being fixed, which was practically just a mix of bird calls and screeches. Cell-Phones were out of the question, of course, as they could be easily hacked and were less secure. They had both gotten so good at it, (they often had to communicate in code), that the noises barely sounded human anymore.

“Coming!” Dick yelled back. (In Bat-speak™ , of course.) He hopped along the edge of the building, before using his grappling hook and swinging across to get to Batman. They greeted each other, then made their way home, as it was already beginning to be early in the morning. “Can Alfred make pb&j’s tonight?” Dick asked. Bruce chuckled.
“We’ll see.” He said.
That night, Bruce was so tired it seems, that neither of them noticed that they were still speaking in Bat-speak™. Or that there was a civilian recording them from the ground.

JUSTICE LEAGUE (Superman):

Clark was alarmed. Being an investigative reporter, he was generally the first- or one of the first- people to hear new gossip. Recently there had been rumors about a cryptid in Gotham, because of the recording that had surfaced online. It was of a dark figure, yelling in a mix of bird calls and sounds that no human should be able to make. There seemed to also be another figure in the edge of the frame, but either nobody noticed or it wasn’t anything. Clark wondered if these rumors coincided with the others about a vigilante in Gotham. They did call him “The Batman”… The main reason that this worried him was that it could also be the rise of a new villain, somebody he might need to keep in check.

“I call this Justice league meeting into session.” Clark said. The Justice league was gathered in their… for lack of a better word- completely and absolutely trashed meeting room. That was the fault of Flash, who got a bit too excited the other day and had zipped around the room making it look like there had been a tornado through it. Nobody had quite wanted to clean it up, and they didn’t have cleaning staff, because what funds they could procure from anonymous sources, (millionaires who would later be “exposed” for helping the Justice league, in order to build their image), had gone to their location in the watchtower. As Diana briefed them on the most recent missions, Clark was paying as much attention as he could, though his mind wasn’t completely there. Diana continued speaking about the crime syndicate that they had been tracking, going over all information that they already knew.

“On top of this, we have just received intel about their location, and that they have been moved to Gotham. If we get there soon, we should be able to shut this operation down.” Diana finished. The room seemed to pause. Then Barry immediately blurted out;
“Wasn’t that vampire dude from there!?” So, Clark wasn’t the only person to have seen that recording! He was even more surprised when everybody else in the room nodded along with murmurs of agreement.
“Barry, I'm sure that it’s fake.” Diana replied. “And even if it was true, we probably won’t even run into that thing anyway.”
“It’s Gotham, Diana!” Oliver exclaimed. “I’ve been to Gotham for galas plenty of times, and I can assure you, what can happen, will happen.” As Oliver and Barry continued trying to convince Diana that going to Gotham was the absolute worst decision ever, she looked to Clark for help. He stood up.

“Guys,” he started. He was loud enough to get the room's attention, so once they were all looking at him, he continued. “Don’t you think that those rumors with the ‘bat vigilante’ and the cryptid could be about the same person?” The room was filled with murmurs. “If we do run into him, I’m sure that we can make peaceful communication and possibly… ask him to join the league?” There were sounds of surprise.
“Oh you have got to be kidding-“ Hal, Barry, and Oliver started in unison.

“I agree.” J’on cut them off. They paused. “Even if we meet the bat there, we still need to complete this mission. It’s possible for us to cut this operation off. Besides, we could benefit from more members.” Because of J’on, Clark, and Diana agreeing, the other three caved.
“Fine, but if you get hunted and (probably) killed by a vampire, you’re on your own.” Barry quipped. Hal and Oliver agreed.
