Work Text:
Romeo was lying on his bed. Staring at the roof while his mind ran wild. His thoughts about Juliet… right? Slightly, she was definitely part of it but she wasn't the center. It was Mercutio, his best friend.
He was thinking about how he and Juliet were now married. He did love her, he truly did. But she wasn’t his first true love. It was Mercutio. No! He couldn’t like his best friend who’s also a guy. That’s absolutely crazy! Sure him and Juliet were also crazy but at least it was like those true love stories. Forbidden love between a girl and boy who would do anything to be with each other, seeming they literally got secretly married.
His thoughts were soon interrupted though. Someone opened his door and entered his room. He quickly sat up glancing at whoever came in, and oh speaking of the devil it was Mercutio. He entered with that usual smirk, the one Romeo always caught himself staring at and- Goddamnit he was staring at Mercutio's lips again! He quickly looked at his eyes but before anything could leave his mouth Mercutio was walking to him and speaking.
“What are you doing my guy? Been in here all day?” Mercutio asked, crossing his arms as he looked at Romeo. Romeo was caught off guard by the fact Mercutio noticed he'd been at home all day.
“Yea I didn’t really have anything needed to be done today.” Romeo responded, trying to act cool. But that was difficult as Mercutio would not break eye contact with him.
“Really? Or are you thinking about your lady?” He said smirking still as he teased Romeo. God Romeo had to try so hard not to blush because holy shit he was weak to teasing. And it coming from Mercutio's mouth? Dear lord, it made it ten times more difficult.
Romeo sat on the edge of his bed manspreading and his hands clasped together, resting in his lap as he tried acting cool and chill. But he was clearly not doing too well as Mercutio raised an eyebrow at him. But didn’t say anything as Romeo spoke up again in response.
“Kind of, I mean it’s crazy. I’m married now.” He chuckled a bit but it wasn’t a fully happy chuckle. It had a bit of nervousness to it. Romeo didn’t expect for Mercutio to notice anything wrong. I mean why would he? But they are best friends, of course Mercutio noticed. His smirk kinda fading away and a glimpse of concern flashed in his eyes.
“Hey Rome, is everything alright? You can talk to me, y'know.” He said while sitting on the bed beside him. Placing a hand on Romeo’s arm. Which just made Romeo more nervous. And he quickly nodded his head and tried to lie. Slightly tumbling over his words at first.
“Yea I’m alright! Just a little tired.” He said quickly, shifting his gaze away as to stop making eye contact with the concerned man. Mercutio wasn’t a fan of this and moved his head trying to make eye contact with Romeo again. Speaking as his smirk was completely gone.
“Romeo, this isn’t like you. What’s really going on? Is it about the marriage?” He wasn’t gonna let Romeo lie himself out of this one. This truly wasn’t like him. It seems like he’s been avoiding him slightly, even before Juliet entered the picture. Now he seems all nervous and can’t even make eye contact.
“Nothing is going on- I'm fine!” Romeo quickly said in a panic, trying to escape this conversation. Mercutio then grabbed Romeo’s arms and firmly but not roughly turned Romeo to face him so he would make eye contact.
“Romeo Montague. Look at me and stop lying.” Mercutio was using that tone that could make anyone squirm, while holding complete eye contact and Romeo couldn’t help but blush. He was just hoping and praying Mercutio wouldn’t notice.
“I-I’m not lying. I guess a lot has just been on my mind recently.” Mercutio stayed looking at him intently looking for any hint of deception. He sensed some but just sighed heavily and released Romeo’s arms but stayed looking at him.
“We’re best friends Rome. Tell me what it is. We’re not leaving till you at least give me something.”
Romeo opened his mouth, about to speak a lie just to get Mercutio off his back. But despite being able to usually lie smoothly. No excuses came to mind and his mouth closed like a fish out of water. So he let out a breath to try and calm himself as he started speaking again, honestly.
“I do love Juliet, truly. I wouldn’t have gone through all that trouble if I didn’t. But I also like someone else. I have for a long time. But I don’t think we’d ever be able to be together.” Romeo said honestly, glancing away and shrugging his shoulders slightly.
Mercutio thought about this. And it made sense but didn’t. Well first because they are best friends so they tell each other everything but Romeo never mentioned anything about this second crush. Plus he says him and that person would probably never get to be together. Which makes no sense because he and Juliet were forbidden love but still managed to be together.
“Well go on, who is it?” Mercutio asked, not pressing but his eyes were looking intently at Romeo's pretty face as he waited for an answer.
Romeo did not respond for a while, taking some deep breaths and physically unable to make eye contact. Before finally saying.
“You.”
