PROLOGUE
Before the 100 Years War, the four nations were kept in balance not only by the Avatar, but by the secondary gender designations of their benders. All firebenders and earthbenders were alphas, and all waterbenders and airbenders were omegas. This bonded each element to its sister, and attracted each element to its opposite. This balance was destroyed when Fire Lord Sozin eliminated the Air Nomads in an attempt to break the Avatar cycle. Fire Lord Azulon, having inherited his father’s paranoia and cruelty, dedicated his reign to capturing and sterilizing the world’s waterbenders, lest the Avatar be reincarnated among them. And he would have succeeded if not for the noble sacrifice of Chieftess Kya of the Southern Water Tribe. She gave her life to save that of her daughter Katara, their tribe’s last bender. For sixteen years Katara’s identity remained hidden as fate bided its time. For Azulon was never destined to capture the Southern Water Tribe’s last bender. No, the spirits had reserved that particular destiny for his grandson, Zuko.
And so our story begins with the fateful day that said banished Fire Nation prince unwittingly captured the world’s last true omega…
and tied her to a tree.
