Chapter Text
Staring at the complete disaster that is her bedroom, Lizzie groans. What on earth do you wear on a date with your best friend? Felicity pokes her head around the corner.
“Shouldn’t you be ready for your date by now?” Fliss asks, her tone teasing.
“I have no idea what I should wear?” Lizzie questions, running a hand through freshly curled hair. Stepping into the room, Fliss surveys the damage.
“Do you know where she’s taking you?” Fliss asks, beginning to sort through the piles of clothes.
“Dinner and ice-skating. With something before dinner.” Lizzie answers, watching as her daughter’s babysitter shuffles through clothes. Tossing her a purple oversized sweater, a pair of dark wash bootleg jeans, Fliss motions for her to try it on before resuming her search.
“Yes or no?” Lizzie asks, catching Fliss’ attention. Shaking her head, Fliss pauses.
“Keep the jeans.” Is all she says as she moves for a certain pile pulling out a red long sleeve, passing it to Lizzie. Grinning, Lizzie slips the new shirt on, earning her a pleased smile from her friend.
“Pair it with your leather jacket or jean jacket and a pair of boots.” Fliss says with a grin. “Now Violet will be here in half an hour, get your ass into gear. I’ll bring Bug up before we leave.”
Lizzie laughs before moving her vanity. “What do you have planned for the two of you tonight?”
“We’re going to catch a movie, ‘Hoppers’ or something like that. Maybe hit the arcade before dinner and then go back home for a bath and bed.” Fliss answers. “If anything comes up, I’ll call, but please try to enjoy your night, you deserve this. Violet is amazing with Millie.”
“Thanks Fliss. Bring her up. I’ll explain to her.” Lizzie responds, touching up her make up before pulling on her jean jacket.
Hearing her daughter enter her room, Lizzie smiles. “Hey Baby girl, are you excited for tonight with Fliss?” Her daughter nods enthusiastically.
“We’re taking Arlo too.” Her daughter states bouncing on her toes. “Where are you going tonight?”
“I’m going out for dinner with Violet, but Violet said that if you wanna we can head to the park tomorrow after soccer and hang out?” Her daughter considers this before nodding. “Have fun with Vi, hug her for me.” Millie states before hugging her mama tight, “You’ll still come and kiss me when you get home, even if I’m asleep?”
“Of course baby, but you better get down stairs or you’ll be late for your movie.” Lizzie jokes hearing Fliss call Millie.
“I love you Mama, you look very pretty!” Her daughter exclaims before exiting her room.
“I love you too, Baby Girl.” Lizzie calls, a pleased smile on her face as she follows her daughter down the stairs.
Glaring at Stella over the phone, Violet groans. “I shouldn’t be this nervous, it’s Lizzie for Christ Sake.” Throwing her head back, Violet looks over her outfit of black jeans and a purple top.
“You are correct. It is Lizzie. The woman you’ve been crushing on for the longest time.” Stella says between giggles.
“I’m glad you find this amusing, but I have to go. I’m picking her up.” Violet states. Waving goodbye, Violet hangs up the phone grabbing her keys, and the flowers she had picked up earlier in the day.
Taking a deep breath, Violet raises her hand to knock only to have the door open before she could.
“You’ve been standing out here for the last five minutes.” Lizzie teases, her eyes scanning Violet’s out, her gaze landing on her face. Violet huffs out a laugh at the teasing before holding up the flowers.
“For you, I’m sorry, I’m a little nervous.” Violet admits, smiling as Lizzie holds the door open for her, taking the flowers and heading into the kitchen. Following Lizzie, Violet smiles at the outfit Lizzie had chosen. “You look gorgeous.” Violet states from her place against the counter. Turning to look at Violet, Lizzie grins.
“Hate to break it to you, but I got told I looked very pretty by Millie.” Lizzie teases before moving into Violet’s space. “You might have to up your game, Beautiful.” Lizzie adds, pecking Violet’s cheek before stepping away.
Violet blinks before grinning. “How was the little one about being left out of this?” Violet asks quietly.
“Oh she was fine, Fliss is taking her and Arlo to see a movie, grab dinner and then the arcade. Then bringing both kids back here for a bath and bed.” Lizzie explains before grabbing her keys and phone. “Now you promised me a really amazing first date, let's see if you’re all talk or not.”
Violet reaches for Lizzie’s hand with a smile. “I’m not, but let’s go.”
Pulling up to the sunset markets, Violet puts the car in park. “I remember you saying ages ago that you would love to go to the sunset markets, but it’s usually on a day where Millie has something on or you’re working.” Violet explains, while Lizzie’s heart explodes.
Violet and her were driving back from a call, and happened to pass the sunset markets. “You know, that's one thing I would love to do. But they are always when Millie has some activity or I’m working.” Lizzie explains, watching the markets fly by.
“We’ll go together one day.” Violet had promised.
“You remembered.” Lizzie whispers, leaning back in her seat.
“I also promised. So what I’m thinking is instead of a restaurant dinner, we walk the markets and just graze?” Violet asks, earning a soft smile from Lizzie.
“Sounds like the perfect first date.” Lizzie whispers into the space between them.
Walking around the markets, Lizzie lets her fingers lace with Violet’s. Walking through stalls, occasionally stopping to have a proper look. Lizzie had picked up a few small things for Millie’s room, when they finally made it to the food truck section.
“There’s so much to choose from.” Lizzie marvels, her eyes scanning the trucks.
“How about you choose our main, and I’ll choose our appetizer?" Violet asks, earning a nod from Lizzie. The two argue about who's paying, but easily split each choice of meal.
Walking back to the car, Lizzie leans against Violet. “Thank you for this.” Lizzie whispers, kissing Violet’s cheek.
“Anytime, Liz,” Violet whispers, crowding Lizzie up against the car. “However, I’ve been dying to kiss you, so can I please kiss you?” Violet pleads. Lizzie doesn’t answer verbally, just tilts her head up to brush her lips against Vi’s. Vi sighs into her mouth before pressing into the kiss with a soft push and pull. Pulling back, Vi watches Lizzie’s eyes open, noting the sparkle that seems to shine. “Hey there.” Violet teases.
“Hey there.” Lizzie whispers, her lips turning up at the corners. “Don’t we have an ice-skating date to get to?” Lizzie asks, her fingers finding the belt loops of Violet’s jeans, tugging her slightly closer.
“That we do.” Violet answers, pecking Lizzie’s lips once more before stepping back.
Dropping Lizzie back home, Violet walks her to the door. Unlocking the door, Lizzie holds it open. “Come in, see the kids before you go. Because if Millie finds out that you were here and didn't come see her, she’ll get upset.” Violet nods following Lizzie into the quiet house.
“You’re back.” Fliss says from the couch. “I’m going to head home. Goodnight Liz and Vi.” Fliss whispers waving to the pair as she grabs her shoes and coat. Violet follows Lizzie up the stairs to Millie’s room. Smiling at the sight that greets them, Millie and Harlow sprawled out across one another in Millie’s bed, both dead to the world. Kissing each kid on the head, Lizzie steps back to allow Violet to do the same.
After closing the door, Lizzie leans back against the wall. “At least I know they’ll be energised enough for the soccer game tomorrow.” Lizzie says with a chuckle, before leading the way downstairs.
“Can I come and watch the game?” Violet asks as the pair stand in the entry way.
“Of course, Millie and Arlo would love that. How about you come here around 7? I’ll cook all of us breakfast and then we’ll all head to the game?” Lizzie suggests, earning a nod from Vi.
“I’ll see you in the morning.” Violet whispers, moving to the door.
“Goodnight, Vi.” Lizzie whispers, leaning in for a sweet kiss.
Returning the kiss, Violet smiles as she pulls away. “Goodnight Liz.” She whispers as she shuts the door behind her.
