Chapter 1: Awakening

Chapter Text

Derek’s eyes blurred, and his head bobbed as he typed his final line, Whatever you do at the crossroads. Keep going forward. Or something like that (I was never really good at endings), he heard his head thump against his desk. He really wasn’t good at endings, not even his own. He didn’t finish the sentence it was left open….

Avery would go on and live at least– he saw it Avery with someone… together and happy in the future, it was worth it.

He could still feel pain, probably the king dragging out both of their ends, trying to save himself. It didn’t matter; it was a faint background now. Until it wasn’t anymore, he was forced back to reality, a sharp breath forcing itself into his throat, an unsteady beat returning to his chest, a stomach turning pain slamming into his head. Breath went down his throat, and bile rose. This wasn’t death, this wasn’t being erased from existence and tossed into the void like the King in Yellow promised. It was worse; it was life.

Pain laced Derek’s body as he forced his head up bile spilled out of his mouth with a wet cough. His laptop was still on the death screen up with the reason for death being an Error. The pain didn’t lessen as he clicked respond. He responded not in one of the intricate halls or puzzles the king in yellow set but in the woods, the normal worldspond. He changed the settings to creative and checked tab. Avery was online but was afk. Had Derek failed? Why was Avery still there? Why was he not moving?

A simple command and d3rlord3 was next to TheMostMayo.

Avery woke up to his laptop going off, the sound of his character being hit. His body was sore from the awkward position he had slumped over in. He blinked blearily at his screen, it was Dere– d3rlord3.

d3rlord3: Avery
d3rlord3: avery please wake up
d3rlord3: i was meant to save you

TheMostMayo: Derek?
TheMostMayo: What happened? I thought… it was probably just a dream but I thought you died

d3rlord3: I don’t know

TheMostMayo: what do you mean you don’t know??

Avery punched him to get the point across.

d3rlord3: I thought I died too avery

TheMostMayo: oh.

d3rlord3: How do you feel?

TheMostMayo: I don’t think you should be the one asking that question, but im fine… are you?

d3rlord3: my head is killing me
d3rlord3: feel likes its been split open

TheMostMayo: I thought it was fine if you looked at the screen?

d3rlord3: it was.
d3rlord3: disconnect Avery

TheMostMayo: no
TheMostMayo: I am not leaving you Derek, you warned me, I owe it to you to stay

d3rlord3: thats not how it works

TheMostMayo: it is now.
TheMostMayo: I’m staying

d3rlord3: are you in survival or creative?

Avery paused looking at the hearts on his screen.

TheMostMayo: /@ screativemode
TheMostMayo: ignore that

Avery huffed, getting the command right this time.

TheMostMayo: Creative so no punching me off cliffs this time

d3rlord3: I was saving you
d3rlord3: because you didn’t listen

TheMostMayo: BECAUSE you lied >:(

d3rlord3: don’t be so easy to lie to then
d3rlord3: i think i am going to get something to eat… I won’t be long

TheMostMayo: okay I’ll wait for you

Derek’s hands shook as he pushed away from his laptop, but he managed. His apartment was dark as he stumbled through it, he ended up in the bathroom. He stared at his reflection. His eyes were brown, nothing special. Yellow golden flakes were corrupting his left eye. He was going to be sick; he wasn’t going to eat anymore.

Yes, he was. This vessel– body needs food to work properly.
