Work Text:
The sudden blaring siren of my alarm startled me to consciousness, flickering beams of early daylight breaking through the gaps in my curtains.
“Ugh, morning already?” I muttered, eyes heavy and unfocused, strands of messy black hair blocking part of my vision.
No time to waste though, gotta get to work.
The streets were oddly empty for the time, normally I have to fight my way through crowded streets to get to the office. Maybe the others will know why it seems like I slept through an apocalypse.
The office was quiet, the rustling of paper and muffled conversation drowned out by my thoughts and footsteps. I had work to do and I was gonna get it done. I keep walking before spotting the familiar blue hair of my co-worker. I think work can wait a little longer, time to put my powers to use.
“Hey darling” I smirk, sneaking up on the blue haired twink, holding back laughter as I watch him startle at my altered voice. “Jimmy!? What the- oh, damn it Raven! I told you to stop that!”
Damn that boy is hopeless when it comes to his feelings.
“Sorry Scotty, I couldn't help it, you're so fun to mess with”
“Shut up”
“Never”
“Oh cut it out you two” A third voice interjected. Pearl strode over, placing an empty mug on the counter beside a small stack of papers she was carrying around, “You're acting like my siblings”. Something seemed off, her bright eyes seemed duller and shadows pooled into miniature bags underneath them. Maybe she didn't sleep well last night.
“Aww, does that mean you care about us” I retort, moving to lean back against the break room counter
“Nope!” Pearl laughed, “never”
“Anyways” Scott sighed, “You need something or did you just want to bother me?”
I laugh, grabbing 2 more mugs and setting the kettle going with enough water for 3, placing coffee grounds in Pearl's and teabags in mine and Scott's.
“I was just curious and wanted to see what the boss had you working on and if it is more interesting than my work”
“I doubt it” Pearl interjected, “it's just more on the recent vigilante activity”
“Uncover anything new?” I query, not really caring for the answer. If I'm being honest with myself, I don't really like them, or rather, I think I'm jealous of them. Two of them have wings, real wings, what I wouldn't give for that gift of flight and freedom.
“If you want info, I'd ask Scott, he knows quite a bit about Canary specifically”
“Hey!”
“It's true, you've practically held hands and hugged”
“He caught me from falling off a building!”
“Close enough”
“Both of you are so annoying” he huffs
I can't help but laugh, if I ever had siblings, I'd want them to be like these two.
“Although” Scott continues, “Do you think he likes chocolate? Just as a completely random question”
He tries to hide it, but I know he's blushing.
“I don't think so, avians are often allergic to chocolate” Pearl chimes in quietly, almost absentmindedly, as if the words left without her knowing.
“What was that?” Scott poked, I don't think he heard what she said, probably daydreaming about the vigilante
“Huh? Oh! Nothing, nothing important” Pearl backtracks.
Something isn't right here, how would Pearl know so much about avians? Does she have pet birds? No, no she mentioned having cats and a dog before so it can't be that.
Does she know an avian?
“She said avians are often allergic to chocolate” I inform Scott before turning to Pearl, “you've been studying avians recently?”
“Hehe, Yep! Definitely! No other reason”
“Are-”
I'm cut off by the kettle reaching its boiling point, Pearl hurries over, pouring the boiling water over the coffee grounds in her mug and scooping up the papers
“Oops! Gotta go! Got some work to do! See you around!” And she scurries off before I can get more answers
“Well that was weird” I muttered, using the remaining water to brew tea for those still in the room.
“Yeah, I know she hasn't been sleeping well recently but something is going on with her”
“Someone should probably keep an eye on her” I say, knowing full well I will be, she knows more than she's letting on and I want to know what she's hiding.
But for now, I've got work to do.
