Chapter Text
Everything reminds me of you. I know you're fine, but what do I do?
"Come on.." She sighed to herself in frustration repeatedly refreshing the messages on her phone. Still nothing new. The longer she let herself stare at this screen the more she wanted to smash it against the table. It was honestly pathetic to act like an impatient high schooler waiting for that one specific person to text her back just to prove that they still cared about her. That's what it always boiled down to, the need for validation that she truly deeply cared as much as she said she does.
"On the house." Amanda smiled placing the glass down gently in front of Safi grabbing her attention suddenly. Swiftly flipping her phone over so the screen was face down on the table.
"You're an angel!"
"Well, it looks like you needed it. You've been playing around with your phone for almost 20 minutes." She chuckled shifting her weight to one side resting her hand upon her waist. Safi let her eyes scan the emptiness of the bar. For a weekend it was oddly quiet.
"I hadn't even noticed." She sighed rubbing her temple a little. Amanda taking a quick seat opposite Safi, folding her arms comfortably on the table to then lean in towards her.
"I know the look too well."
"What look?"
"The look of woman troubles." She chuckled back at her with a raise of her eyebrow. A playful smirk spreading across her lips making Safi laugh before lifting the glass to her lips and taking a sip. Heavy. Just how she liked it.
"You couldn't be more wrong, if there's one thing to know about me it's that I don't let myself get dragged down by relationships." She deflected with a laugh placing the glass back down. Amanda simply nodding back at her very obviously not convinced by a single word she said. Amanda then letting out a soft sigh and lightly slapping the top of the table with her hand before jumping to her feet again.
"Listen-"
"Max!" Safi cheered waving her over towards them. Amanda glancing between them biting back a chuckle as Max shuffled her way towards the table.
"Hey Amanda." Her voice soft and sweet as ever. A warm smile spread across her face that instinctively makes you want to smile back at her.
"Way to keep a girl waiting Caufield!" Safi teased with a playful grin instinctively making Max chuckle as she took her seat in the same spot Amanda just got up from.
"I'll grab you a drink." Amanda smiled before shuffling off back towards the bar. Safi let out a quiet sigh of relief letting her shoulders relax again.
"My bad, I was drowning in work." Max explained slowly with a small throw of her head. Safi rolling her eyes at her explanation.
"When are you not." Safi bantering along with her to ease the mood until Amanda waltzed back over and placed down a cosmopolitan down in front of Max.
"Thanks, I really needed this." Max replied as Amanda gave her a small wink strolling back over to her bar. Safi's eyes firmly fixed on Max watching her gently lift the glass to her lips to take a slow sip. Then glancing up towards her blue eyes exactly like the ocean. A place you could so easily get sucked in to. She had to pull herself away before she let herself drown in them.
"So-"
"Oh, I almost forgot." Max cut her off abruptly placing her glass back down with a smile. "Your mom is asking to see you." She continued. Safi instinctively letting out a loud groan rolling her eyes back.
"She knows where I am." She groaned lifting her glass to throw back the remainder of her drink. Max's eyes softening with a quiet sigh at her reaction.
"Safi-"
"No, you don't get to ignore my texts then come in here and lecture me about my mom!" Safi hissed back through a whisper to not bring attention to them both. Max taken back by her sudden shift in tone.
"I've been really busy." She explained. Safi's brows narrowing into a frown.
"For 2 days? Don't use those lame excuses with me Max. I know you better than that." Safi snapped back at her still quiet enough to not cause a scene. Max's eyes falling to her almost empty glass.
"I didn't know how to respond.." She sighed not looking back at her. Safi staring back at her with a frown for a few moments.
"Any response was better than none."
"I know.." Max sighed finally lifting her eyes again to look back at her. Her eyes still soft and now glossed over. Safi leaned back again adjusting her composure in her seat.
"Should we talk about...it?" Safi asked with a small shrug of her shoulders. Max taking another sip of her drink before answering her.
"Maybe we should just move on from it. No point making everything more messy." Max replied her soft eyes staring right through her. Safi's eyes darting back and forth across her face for a split second.
"So that's it? We just forget about it?"
"Safi, we were drunk. I was a mess. There's no point dwelling on it." Max sighed her brows curving up a little as she spoke. And just like that it felt like a stone dropped to the pit of Safi's stomach. What else did she expect? It happened right after she had another disagreement with Chloe about their break up. She was the one who suggested getting wasted to take her mind off everything. It was all her idea.
"Yeah, you're right." She exhaled shuffling to her feet to rustle through her bag and pull out her box of cigarettes. Max's eyes widening in a slight look of surprise. She had told her she was trying to quit although it wasn't exactly going well. Nothing was by the looks of it.
"Safi.."
"I'm going out for a smoke." She interrupted waving her box in the air then quickly shuffling outside. It felt like she could finally catch her breath again, hunching over for a second to exhale heavily before lighting the one remaining cigarette she had left. If there was one thing Max was right about it's the fact she needs to quit this habit.
