“Really?” Jiwook squints at the screen, seated beside his boyfriend on the small table.
“What?” Sullhoon smiles teasingly, moving the mouse’s cursor around.
He finally agreed to play Minecraft with him again. Sullhoon had been quietly asking for weeks, waiting for Jiwook to take the hint. It started with a simple text— “It looks like you.” With it came a screenshot of a small, pale wolf puppy standing alone in the middle of a snowy biome. Then, after a few days, Sullhoon gave him a small keychain— a weird green monster to go with his weird black monster. So yeah, it was safe to say he had to play this damn game with him, especially after the whole beds together incident.
The first time they played it, it was chaotic. They were both using their phones at a random get-together and everyone was playing too. Haenam exploded Jinsok's house with a bunch of TNT and he cried for a good thirty minutes, interrupting their game session shortly. So, he only saw a cow, fought a skeleton, and cut wood before everything went to shit. He didn’t even register the beds inside the dirt block house Sullhoon made for them.
“This name! And also, hard? I don’t know shit about this game,” he complains with a frown.
“Fine.” Sullhoon switches the difficulty to Normal before hitting the Create New World button, loading screen taking over the monitor. Jiwook childishly bites him on the arm and he hisses, but doesn’t react more than that.
They patiently watch the world being created for a few seconds. As soon as the green dirt blocks and blue sky appear, Sullhoon quickly enters the settings doing something Jiwook can’t be bothered to guess.
“Let me,” he says before going for Jiwook’s laptop keyboard. It’s an awkward angle and Sullhoon’s armpit is right in his nose so Jiwook has to bear his Dragonblast scent or whatever the fuck this Old Spice deodorant smells like for the time he types in the server IP, “There you go.”
“Thanks, hyung,” Jiwook smiles because Sullhoon actually looks excited to play with him. It’s cute.
sullhoon2004 joined the game.
jiwoooook joined the game.
After the game loads, Jiwook sees the exact same scenario he saw on Sullhoon's screen. He hesitantly presses the WASD buttons, moving slowly while trying to control the camera through the mouse movement. He clearly has no coordination.
Sullhoon's character appears in front of him holding a block of wood. Jiwook squints.
“Why are you dressed like Hello Kitty?”
“It’s pretty,” he shrugs, but also blushes a little. Jiwook was ready to tease him, but a sight on his screen made him pause.
“Wait. Is that me?” Jiwook points, eyes widened in pure horror. He’s an ugly man with a cyan shirt and dark blue pants. He’s so far from the fashion trends.
“Yeah, that’s Steve. It’s the default skin,” Sullhoon nods, oblivious, “We can change it later. You can even make your own skin,” he offers and pats his head, one hand still on the keyboard.
“Okay…” he pouts, still horrified, but focuses on his screen, punching a block of wood.
jiwoooook was blown up by a Creeper
<sullhoon2004> kim jiwook pabo
<jiwoooook> shut up
“Look, there’s a village,” Sullhoon nods to the monitor, their characters walking together. Jiwook trails slowly behind with a low hunger bar, “We can take their wheat to make bread.”
He eagerly hits the crops, taking the wheat and the potatoes to satiate his hunger bar. Sullhoon goes for the chests inside the houses, gathering emeralds. Jiwook takes the opportunity to roam around— Sullhoon gave him a run through about villagers, emeralds, and trades a few minutes ago after they met a wandering trader so he’s curious.
“One emerald for two redstones? C’mon,” Jiwook shakes his head at the monitor and Sullhoon chuckles with his boyfriend's mannerisms, taking his hand off the mouse to mess with his grey hair.
“We need to increase their levels by trading,” he mentions, going for the armorer house, “Then the trades get better.”
Jiwook hums in agreement. He checks the fountain and steals a bell for future needs. He’s searching for Sullhoon when he suddenly encounters a weird mob— red eyes, long arms, and vines decorating his white body. Jiwook bravely holds his stone sword and attacks, not feeling threatened at all. He should’ve felt threatened though, because the mob instantly starts to swing its arms towards him, flinging him into the air. He screams.
Sullhoon flinches beside him, “What? What?” He tries to find him in the village but gives up, watching his monitor instead, “Oh, puppy. You can’t hit the Iron Golem.”
jiwoooook was slain by Iron Golem
His items drop all over the ground, the “You Died!” mocking his face.
“How the fuck was I supposed to know that?” He can’t believe this. All his XP and items gone in only a few seconds. Stupid fucking game.
<jiwoooook> what if we kissed in the end portal
<sullhoon2004> we can kiss under the cherry blossoms isn't that more romantic
After a few hours playing, Jiwook learns that Sullhoon is a provider. He mines even when it’s nighttime, he builds automatic farms that Jiwook doesn't understand how they work on a game full of cubes and he also kills the mobs that wander around their base.
Jiwook drops flowers to him all the time and Sullhoon always keeps them in his inventory, smiling like it’s the first time he has done that.
He comes back from the caves with his inventory full of ores while Jiwook has five items in his— an iron sword, a stone shovel, three seeds, a cookie, and a red flower. He shouldn't be turned on by this heteronormative fantasy but he is. It's probably the honeymoon phase. Probably.
Jiwook actually enjoys mining, it’s somewhat relaxing, the act of breaking stone blocks without having to think about anything. His main concern is the mobs— the scary sounds are enough for him to stay clear from the caves, mining in a straight line underground.
“What the fuck is this sound?” he frowns, taking one of his wired earbuds out. It's a loud and low-pitched groan, echoing in the small space he was digging. Jiwook pokes Sullhoon two times, taking his attention out of his own mining time. “Listen,” Jiwook takes an earbud out of his ear to replace it with his own. Sullhoon drags his chair a little, coming closer with a hand in the small of Jiwook’s back.
“It’s a Warden. I think you’re under it.” He presses one of Jiwook’s keyboard keys, checking his coordinates. “It’s a mob that can smell and hear you.”
“Smell? You’re joking.” This game doesn’t make sense at all.
“Yeah, it sniffs the air,” For some reason, Sullhoon feels the need to sniff the air to prove a point. Jiwook giggles because he looks stupid as hell.
“We need a real house, hyung,” he says, shaking his head at the sight of their small base made of cobblestone.
“Do we?”
“We can’t live like this. No windows, no roof, grass floor. What are we?”
Sullhoon laughs, “Let’s build one then.”
They spent the rest of their night lying on Sullhoon’s bed and watching videos of Minecraft house tutorials, methodically analyzing architecture, theme, building materials, exterior and interior decor. It’s serious for Jiwook— they need to unite beds in a beautiful bedroom and not a cobblestone dungeon.
“Roseridge manor it is,” Jiwook reads the title of the video, nodding to the manor with a tall tower, a bridge, pink roofs, and a beautiful exterior.
“Send me the material list,” Sullhoon cuddles up to him, hugging his waist and smelling his hair. He always does that and Jiwook can’t understand why.
“It’s a lot.”
“I can start tomorrow after class and by Saturday we can start the house.”
Jiwook puts down the phone and holds one of the hands in his waist, interlacing their fingers. He takes their hands next to his lips, pecking the back of Sullhoon’s hand.
“We should skip class,” Jiwook states before yawning.
Sullhoon hums, the sound vibrating against his neck, “What about work?”
He groans, “I totally forgot about that.”
Jiwook works part-time at a movie theater with Kyujoon. It’s not a bad job— he mostly serves popcorn and sodas for a few hours. He also gets free tickets here and there. It’s fine, really, but all he wants to do tomorrow is lie in bed with his boyfriend.
“Sleep,” Sullhoon says, muffled by his neck. The grip on his waist is getting weak and Jiwook knows he’s probably going to fall asleep in the next thirty seconds. He always falls asleep easily.
“Good night, hyung.”
He’s pretending to work when Sullhoon texts him.

Sullhoon stops answering and for a few minutes Jiwook thinks he actually focused on studying. He was wrong, because after exactly ten minutes Sullhoon answers with a video that makes him laugh out loud— he went through all the trouble to write “stop nagging” with oak wood only to explode the words with a bunch of TNT.
sullhoonie <3:
That’s how annoying you are, Kim Jiwook
