Chapter 1: can i kiss you?

Chapter Text

The cool breeze slipping through the passenger-side window brushed against Daniela’s face as she watched the road. Jonah’s hand squeezed her left thigh. That night, Lara had invited them to a club where she’d be DJing. Jonah said he couldn’t go because he already had plans with his friends, but he offered to drive Daniela there.

And there they were, in a weird silence.

“Can’t you really come with me?” Daniela’s voice broke it, turning her face to look at her boyfriend, pushing the curls out of her sight.

“I’m sorry, baby. I already made plans to go out with the guys to a new club,” the bleached blonde replied, and Daniela simply gave in, nodding.

It was always the same with him.

Once outside the club, Daniela opened the car door. She honestly wanted to leave without saying goodbye, but her chin was held and her lips were caught in a wet kiss.

“I’ll pick you up at five.”

She closed the door behind her. She adjusted her bag on her shoulder as she walked toward the entrance, passing the line since Lara had given her direct access. She wore a white dress, the cross on her chest catching the light—a necklace she wouldn’t take off for anything in the world.

“Good evening, I’m here for Lara, I’m Daniela Avanzini,” she said kindly to the security guard, waiting for confirmation.

“Daniela Avanzini and Jonah David…”

“Just Daniela Avanzini.”

“Go ahead.”

Daniela smiled and walked in, heading toward the booth where Lara would be. She slipped backstage and found her friend drinking and laughing with a group of people.

“Lara!”

At the sound of her name, the tall girl turned around and opened her arms, pulling Daniela into a warm hug, the music vibrating between them.

“Bitch! You look insanely hot.” They both laughed at Lara’s comment.

Daniela turned to the rest, greeting everyone politely.

“Guys, this is Daniela, one of my best friends I told you about. Dani, this is Orly, she’s Manon, Sophia, Adela…” Daniela nodded as Lara kept introducing the others.

“I just noticed—are you alone? Where’s Jonah?”

“He said he already had plans with his friends, but he’ll pick me up at five.” She shrugged, not wanting to get into it.

A hand rested on her shoulder, making her turn. Megan and Yoonchae.

“Hello, mis niñas!” Dani hugged them warmly, smiling before joining the group again, realizing it was time for Lara to start her set.

“Hey, do you want to come with us to the front row?” the girl with braids asked with a bright smile. The three of them accepted, making their way through the crowd to their reserved spot.

In a clumsy step, Dani stumbled slightly and the sunglasses resting on her head fell—but a taller dark-haired girl caught them.

Oh. The one named Sophia.

“Here you go.” Sophia smiled, and Daniela had to tilt her head up slightly to return it.

“Thank you… Sophia, right?”

“Yeah. You’re Daniela—pretty name, hard to forget. Lara told me you’re Latina.”

They walked side by side, pressed together by the crowd. Daniela held onto Sophia’s bicep, noticing how firm it was.

“Yeah… I’m half Cuban half Venezuelan.”

Sophia offered her some of her drink, and Daniela accepted, sipping from the straw as they reached their spot.

“That’s interesting. Looks like we’re all from different places—I’m Filipina.” Sophia laughed, her eyes curving into crescents. She leaned down slightly to drink from the same straw Daniela was holding.

“Filipina? Wow, I’ve never met someone from there. Can you teach me something?”

“Yeah! Of course, basic words, let me think him… ‘hello’ is literally hello, ‘thank you’ is salamat po, ‘goodbye’ is paalam, ‘I love you’ is mahal kita.”

I like how mahal kita sounds…” Daniela said softly, taking another sip.

They were about to continue when Lara appeared on stage with her DJ setup, the crowd erupting in cheers. Megan, with her arms around Yoonchae’s shoulders, jumped excitedly.

Lara’s set started, and everyone began dancing. Daniela stayed close to Sophia, sharing a drink and moving together. For her, dancing like that with her friends was normal. She had been straight her whole life, and even now that she was with Jonah, that hadn’t changed.

But something in Sophia’s gaze was intense. Intoxicating. She didn’t know if the alcohol was starting to hit or if being looked at like that was what made her dizzy.

Why did she like men? Because they were tall, protective, attentive, strong.

But her boyfriend was everything but attentive and protective.

Meanwhile, Sophia was tall, strong, attentive—making sure Daniela didn’t lose her things or fall, even showing interest in her story. And now they were pressed together, Daniela able to feel Sophia’s breath against her forehead as they swayed to the music.

“Sorry, I’m going to hold you, otherwise you’ll get crushed in the crowd,” Sophia said, placing her free hand on Daniela’s waist.

“Thanks,” Daniela smiled, resting one hand on her shoulder as she drank from their shared cup—they were almost done.

Sophia held her firmly, and Daniela barely stumbled anymore, that body keeping her steady. Now she danced with her back against the Filipina, swaying her hips, noticing the braided girl sharing a joint with the pink-haired one just in front of them. They offered. She refused.

“Daniela.”

Her name left those glossy, full lips, making her turn.

Can I kiss you?

The question caught her off guard.

No, you have a boyfriend. Why would you kiss someone you just met—and a woman? She definitely can’t kiss you.

Yeah.”

It was the last thing she said before Sophia kissed her—hot, deep, sudden. One hand at her waist turned into two, pulling her closer, their chests pressed together as their lips fought for dominance. Sophia’s warm, soft tongue slipped into her mouth, finding hers, moving in a slow, wet rhythm. Their saliva kept them connected every time they pulled back for air before kissing again.

Daniela’s fingers tangled in the hair at the back of her neck, gripping hard. She loved the authority Sophia gave off just by holding her like that. God, she needed it—needed to feel wanted, handled like that. Her boyfriend hadn’t even told her how good she looked in that white dress, too busy wanting her to model his monotonous clothing brand.

Sophia’s hands slid lower, grabbing her ass and squeezing to pull her closer. Her teeth caught Daniela’s lower lip, tugging slightly before kissing her again.

Daniela felt no guilt.

Daniela felt things she wasn’t supposed to feel.

When they pulled apart, Daniela laughed breathlessly, cheeks burning, hiding in Sophia’s shoulder before going back to dancing.

They stayed like that for a long while, dancing close, kissing every now and then, carefree and heated, both influenced by the alcohol they’d shared.

When Lara’s set ended, the group scattered. Sophia went to get more drinks with Manon, Megan and Yoonchae, who seemed to be getting along well, while Daniela stayed with Adela to wait for Lara.

When Lara came down, they hugged her tightly.

“You did amazing, girl! I’m so proud of you,” Daniela said warmly, hugging her and rubbing her back. When they pulled away, she checked her phone.

4:49 a.m.

In barely ten minutes, her boyfriend would be there.

No. She couldn’t leave without feeling that girl’s hands one last time.

She walked toward the bar, scanning the area, trying to find her friends—and her—but with no luck.

After a while, she spotted Yoonchae’s blonde hair and hurried over.

“¡Niñas! I was looking for you,” she said, placing her hands on Megan and Yoonchae’s shoulders.

“Hi Dani! We were too! Sophia went to look for you, she’s super sweet,” Megan said with a smile, handing one of the drinks to Manon.

“Oh… where did she go?” Daniela tried to hide the urgency in her voice.

“I don’t know… hey, I forgot to tell you—Manon’s hosting an after party at her place. You’re invited, you can bring your boyfriend.”

A small spark of hope crossed her chest. Maybe if she didn’t find her now, she could find her there. Even if she hated the idea of bringing Jonah, at this point everything felt the same.

She checked the time.

5:03 a.m.

I’m coming, wait for me there

Daniela said goodbye with a warm hug, looking around one last time for Sophia—but nothing. She checked herself in her phone camera, fixing her gloss, and walked toward Jonah’s car. She got in, placing her bag on her lap, still feeling the ghost of Sophia’s touch on her body.

“Hey, baby. Did you have fun?” Jonah sounded drunk. Daniela tried to hide her discomfort.

“Yeah,” she forced a smile.
