What it looks like

Summary:

What does a family made up of a fox and bunny union look like?
It looks like love. ❤️

Work Text:

The urge was growing stronger. Judy tried to play it off, but Nick could see the longing in her eyes.

They were picking up some groceries in the Kangaroo Korner. Nick was piling up the cart with blueberries when he saw it. Judy leaning on the cart distracted, he tracked her gaze and his ears flattened.

It was a wolf family. The mother rocking a baby bundled in a pink blanket, and the father making silly faces and making a toddler pup giggle.

“Carrots? You okay?” Nick asked and Judy strapped back at attention and gave him a sweet smile.

“Yup. Super” She said with a layer of false enthusiasm.

“Hmm” Nick took another glance at the wolf family. It was then that Judy saw their cart was overflowing with blueberries.

“Nick, you can’t eat blueberries for every meal.” She chided and reached over to put back half the containers that Nick had placed in the cart. Normally they would get some from the farm but they didn’t have time to trek all the way to Bunnybourrow.

“Well of course not. That’s what pizza is for” he said with a wink. Judy rolled her eyes and they rolled down to the vegetable aisle.

It was hours later, after eating a veggie flatbread that Nick insisted was not a pizza and they were watching Grils Bear in a desert adventure, that Nick nudged his wife.

“Do you want to have a baby?” He asked and Judy’s ears, which were comfortably tucked down, shot up in alarm and her violet eye grew wide.

“WOAH! Where did that come from?” Judy asked with a small laugh. Nick looked at her and scanned her face.

“I know we can’t have them organically but there are surrogates or IVF or…” Nick was about to go on before Judy leaned up and kissed him.

“Nick, love. You are my family. Sure I wish there was a world where there would be a perfect blend of you and me. I am sure that’s what my brother Harvey and his husband wish for too.” Judy explained and held his face between her paws. She loved his eyes, the mischievous green that shone with more child-like glee than Nick would care to admit. Now she stared at those beautiful eyes and saw the sheen of hurt that he couldn’t give her these impossible wishes. “I want you, only you. There is no me without you.” Judy whispered before wrapping her arms around his neck and pressed her lips against his.

Nick wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled Judy close. When Judy’s nails lightly dragged behind the fox’s neck a growl shivered up his chest.

In an instant, Judy was flipped on her back on the couch with Nick above her, his tongue and paws leaving the bunny whimpering and breathless.

The episode ended with Grils roaring in triumph from finding the desert oasis. Though Nick and Judy don’t acknowledge the show until mid way through the next episode when Grils is diving by the coral reefs on Outback Island.

They ended up on the floor with Nick propped against the couch with Judy between his legs and leaning back against his chest.

Nick rubbed small circles around Judy’s toned stomach, the fur on her belly was incredibly soft.

“You would look cute pregnant” Nick chuckled into Judy’s ear. Judy laughed and shook her head.

“No thanks, there are more than enough rabbits in the world.” She said and moved to marvel at Nick’s massive paw with her comparatively much tinier ones.

“It’s funny, my mom was pregnant most of my life and I know she loves me and my siblings but I can’t imagine that was easy for her.” Judy mused. “I knew I never wanted a huge family, that was for sure and so many bucks looked at me like I was such a freak for it. But I did want a family. Just one that I was able to actually be able to spend time with. I thought that if I had a say in it. I would want just one”

Nick nuzzled between her ears at the top of her head. “When my dad left, it was just me and my mom and I loved her so much, when she died I thought it was just me. I didn’t have any family.”

He said and traced his index claw up and down Judy’s right arm. He smirked at the shiver that it elicited. “Before you, I thought I would be content by myself. You know, foxes being solitary creatures and all, but now…” Nick turned Judy’s bare shoulders so he could look at her.

“Now, I can’t imagine a life without you. You are more than just my pack. You’re my everything.” Nick said and Judy’s nose quivered before her eyes brimmed with tears.

“And you’re mine,” Judy admitted in a watery voice. He smiled at her and brought her to his chest. She sniffed and rubbed at the light hair on his chest. She loved the slight curl in his fur there and would run her paws through it every chance she could.

“Though I can say that there are more than enough rabbits in the world. I think that maybe we could welcome another fox into ours…” Judy said and Nick stiffened for a moment. Judy sat back on her heels and looked up into the wide eyes of her husband.

“You want-“ Nick started but stopped and swallowed. Judy held his paws, moreso his thumbs, between hers.

“Let’s adopt a baby fox,” Judy said.
